This is to carry out an extensive survey = of the galaxies lying behind this cluster. The observations were = completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.2 Completed FOS/RD 5824 (Occultation of GSC5249 by Saturn) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to observe = Saturn's atmosphere and its rings while being occulted by Tethys. Spectra = of the occulted object, of Saturn's atmosphere and of Saturn's rings will = be obtained before and after the occultation. At 019/1018Z and as = recorded in HSTAR 5471, an FOS target acquisition failed due to an FGS = loss of lock. Otherwise, the observations were completed, and no other = problems have been reported. 1.3 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6352 (Dwarf Eliptical Galaxy = Snapshots) The WF/PC-2 was used to survey VCC1577, from a sample of 30 dwarf = eliptical galaxies. The observations were completed as planned, and no = anomalies were reported. 1.4 Completed Two Sets of GHRS/2 6172 (CRIMP2: Cycle 5 = Condensed-Regimen Integrated Monitoring Program) The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side Two) was used to obtain = darks, internal flats (in photoscan mode), wavelength calibrations and = observations of standard star BD+28D4211. This includes detector = calibration, sensitivity monitoring, and wavelength monitoring. This is a part of a large survey of = S0, E/S0, and S0/a class galaxies. The targets will cover a wide range in = luminosity and environment. The observations were completed as planned, = and no anomalies were noted. 1.7 Completed WF/PC-2 6250 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5 Calibration: Internal = Monitor) The WF/PC-2 was used to make a series on internal calibration = observations. Internal flats, biases, and K-Spot calibration images were = taken. These observations are designed to monitor the health of the = cameras. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies = were noted. 1.8 Completed FGS 6267 (Parallax of Feige 24) The FGSs were used in the POS Mode to make astrometric observations = of the white dwarf star FEIGE 24 and several reference stars in order to = measure its parallax. The target is one of the first white dwarfs found = to be an EUV source and subsequently has been found to be an X-Ray source = and an interacting binary. The observations were completed as planned, = and no problems were reported. 1.9 Completed WF/P-2 6254 (GTO Pure Parallel Program - Cycle 5) The WF/PC-2 was use to make random long exposures of high galactic = fields taken in parallel with the prime science observations to obtain a = random sample of galaxies. The observations were executed as scheduled, = and no anomalies were noted. 1.10 Completed COSTAR/U 6162 (FOC Cycle 5 PSF Monitoring) The Faint Object Camera (f/96) was used to make observations of a = standard star BPM16274 and to monitor the point spread function of the = COSTAR optical system. An internal flat calibration image was also taken. = The observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were = noted. 1.11 Completed WF/PC-2 6129 (The Structure, Polarization, and Evolution = of the Crab Synchrotron Nebula) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the area near = Crab-Pulsar (M-1) in order to study its structure, polarization, and = evolution. Two color and polarization images were made. The observations = were executed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.12 Completed Three Sets of FOS/RD 6236 (FOS Cycle 5: Location of = Spectra and Wavelength Calibration: Red Side Detector) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make = calibration observations in order to determine the location of the spectra = and to perform a wavelength calibration. All observations were internal. = The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were = reported. 1.13 Completed WF/PC-2 5962 (Young Globular Clusters in Merging = Galaxies: Part III) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of two merging galaxies = (aka, NGC-4038/4039) in order to study its compact young blue globular = clusters to determine their age, luminosity function, and physical = properties. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies = were noted. 1.14 Completed GHRS/2 5857 (Is Mixing or Mass Loss the Cause of Decline = in 12C/13C) The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side Two) was used to make = spectrographic observations of the halo star HD122563 to study the ratio = of its 12C/13C Carbon and the abundance of its boron. The results will = influence models of evolution off of the main sequence. The observations = were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.15 Completed FOS/RD 6222 (Spectra of Gravitationally Lensed QSO = PG1115+080) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make = observations of the gravitationally lensed quasar PG1115+080. Variations = in the velocity and column density of Lyman-Alpha forest clouds and = associated absorption systems on small scales will be studied with = observations of a closely spaced pair of images of the QSO. The = observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.16 Completed WF/PC-2 6253 (Pure Parallel Archive Program) The WF/PC-2 was used to execute a pure parallel program taking = ultraviolet observations running concurrently with prime science = observations. The intent is to search for extra-galactic sources with = flux excesses at 3000 A0 and galactic sources with excesses at 1600 A0. = The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.17 Completed FOS/BL 6103 (Ne VIII 774 Emission From QSOs) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Blue Side) was used to make = observations of QSO Q1435-0134 in order to study its Ne VIII 774 = emissions. Confirmation of this very high ionization line would tell much = about the physical conditions within the QSO. The observations were = completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.18 Completed WF/PC-2 6107 (Dynamics and Ages of Nuclear Stellar Disks = in Virgo E/S0 Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the E/S0 class galaxy = NGC-4342 which is located in the Virgo Cluster in order to study its age = and its thin nuclear stellar disk. The images will also be examined for = population differences between the disk and that of the host galaxy. The = observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 16 Successful : 16 As documented in HSTAR 5471, there was an FGS loss of lock at = 019/1018Z. Scheduled Reacquisitions : 27 Successful : 27 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled : 44 Successful : 44 2.3 Operations Notes: The Battery #5 capacity test is ongoing. Operations personnel tried to dump ESTR #2 at 019/1613Z. There was = no tape motion and the motor current flagged high. ESTR #2 was = subsequently powered off. An investigation of this anomalous event is in = progress. Until a determination is made as to the likely status of ESTR = #2 and further engineering testing is performed, engineering data normally = collected during LOS periods on ESTR #2, is lost. 3.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS: Nothing at this time. /DMH
