HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1556 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 01/24/96 - 0000Z (UTC) 01/25/96 Daily Status Report as of 025/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed GHRS/2 5894 (The Hot Gaseous Halo of the Large Magellanic = Cloud) The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side Two) was used to make = observations of star SK-70.96, located in the Large Magellanic Cloud in = order to study the cloud's hot gaseous halo. The spectrographic = observations were used to search for interstellar C IV absorption lines in = the line of sight to the star. The observations were executed as = scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.2 Completed WF/PC-2 6303 (Observations of Galaxies Underlying = Quasars) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of low red shift quasar = PKS0202-76 in order to study its underlying galaxy. The purpose is to = detect structure down to the 0.1 arcsecond level. The observations were = completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.3 Completed FOC/96 6160 (FOC Cycle 5 UV Throughput Monitoring) The Faint Object Camera (F/96) was used to make ultraviolet = observations of dwarf standard star BPM16274 and also with the internal = calibration lamp in order monitor the ultraviolet throughput of the = FOC/COSTAR/HST combination. The observations were executed as scheduled, = and no anomalies were noted. 1.4 Completed Two Sets of WF/P-2 6254 (GTO Pure Parallel Program - = Cycle 5) The WF/PC-2 was use to make random long exposures of high galactic = fields taken in parallel with the prime science observations to obtain a = random sample of galaxies. The observations were executed as scheduled, = and no anomalies were noted. 1.5 Completed FOS/RD 6222 (Spectra of Gravitationally Lensed QSO = PG1115+080) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make = observations of the gravitationally lensed quasar PG1115+080. Variations = in the velocity and column density of Lyman-Alpha forest clouds and = associated absorption systems on small scales will be studied with = observations of a closely spaced pair of images of the QSO. The = observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 5999 (The Nuclear Structure of S0 Galaxies: A PC = Imaging Survey) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of S0 class NGC-3489 in = order to study its nuclear structure. This is a part of a large survey of = S0, E/S0, and S0/a class galaxies. The targets will cover a wide range in = luminosity and environment. T he observations were completed as planned, = and no anomalies were noted. 1.7 Completed FOS/BL 6206 (FOS Polarimetry Calibration) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Blue Side) was used to determine the = most useful spectropolarimetric modes. Observations were made of standard = star BD+28D4211. The investigators will determine the locations of the = polarization spectra, the transmission of the polarizer, the angles of the = Wollaston prisms and waveplates in celestial coordinates, and the = instrumental polarization. The observations were completed as planned, = and no anomalies were reported. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 4 Successful : 4 Scheduled Reacquisitions : 12 Successful : 12 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled : 2 Successful : 2 2.3 Operations Notes: ESTR #2 remains powered off pending the completion of the on-going = anomaly investigation. 3.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS: Nothing at this time. /DMH
