HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1563 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 02/02/96 - 0000Z (UTC) 02/05/96 Daily Status Report as of 036/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 5972 (Determination of the = Extragalactic Distance Scale) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the galaxy NGC-2090 = looking for standard candle Cepheid variable stars. The purpose of this = observations is to help estimate the Hubble constant with an accuracy of = 10%. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were = noted. 1.2 Completed FOS/RD 6020 (SINS: Supernova Intensive Study - Cycle 5) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make = spectrographic observations of the supernova remnant LMC-SN1987 which is = located in the Large Magellanic Cloud. This is to study the development = of the nova, and its interstellar matter. The observations were completed = as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.3 Completed Two Sets of GHRS/2 5894 (The Hot Gaseous Halo of the = Large Magellanic Cloud) The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side Two) was used to make = observations of stars SK-69.59 and SK-67.46 located in the Large = Magellanic Cloud in order to study the cloud's hot gaseous halo. The = spectrographic observations were used to search for interstellar C IV = absorption lines in the line of sight to these stars. The observations = were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.4 Completed WF/PC-2 6250 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5 Calibration: Internal = Monitor) The WF/PC-2 was used to make a series on internal calibration = observations. Internal flats, biases, and K-Spot calibration images were = taken. These observations are designed to monitor the health of the = cameras. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies = were noted. 1.5 Completed WF/PC-2 6127 (Velocity Field and Small Scale Structure in = the L1551 IRS5 Jet) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the jet IRS5 located = in Herbig-Haro object L1551 in order to study its velocity field and the = time evolution of small structures within the jet. The FGS acquisition = for this proposal failed at 034/022410Z, and the re-acquisition at = 34/040700Z also failed due to the search radius being exceeded. HSTAR = 5487 was written. No further anomalies were noted. 1.6 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6344 (Low - Mass Binaries in the = Hyades - Completing the Survey) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the low mass binary = star RHY309 (M-Class Dwarf Stars) which is located in the Hyades Cluster. = The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.7 Completed GHRS/1 6018 (Reading the "Rosetta Stone": GHRS = Spectroscopy of Individual Stars) The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side One) was used to make = observations of individual stars (i.e., Melnick-34, et al) located in = R136A which in turn is located in the Large Magellanic cloud. The goal is = to obtain a better understanding of the evolution of very massive stars. = The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.8 Completed FOS/RD 6167 (FOS Cycle 5: Dark Monitoring) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make several = dark calibration images. All exposures were internals. All spectra was = done in the image mode. The observations were completed as planned, and = no problems were reported. 1.9 Completed Three Sets of WF/PC-2 6179 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5: Photometric = Zero Point) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of photometric standard = stars SA95-330, S121-E and P177-D in order to calibrate the photometric = zero point. The calibration was done for 18 WF/PC filters. The FHST = update which occurred just before this proposal failed. However, the = observations apparently were executed as planned, and no problems were = reported. 1.10 Completed WF/PC-2 6841 (The Nucleus of Comet H-M-P) The WF/PC-2 was used to make photometry and colorimetry = observations of the nuclear region of Comet-45P (aka, Comet = Honda-Markos-Pajdusakova) during its close approach to Earth. The = observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.11 Completed FOC/96 6161 (FOC/96 Cycle 5 Aperture Location Monitor) The Faint Object Camera (f/96) was used to make astrometric = standard field observations of NGC-188-51 (et al) to monitor the location = of the camera's f/96 apertures with respect to the V2-V3 coordinate frame. = A dark calibration image was also taken. The observations were completed = as scheduled, and no problems were reported. 1.12 Completed WF/PC-2 6253 (Pure Parallel Archive Program) The WF/PC-2 was used to execute a pure parallel program taking = ultraviolet observations running concurrently with prime science = observations. The intent is to search for extra-galactic sources with = flux excesses at 3000 A0 and galactic sources with excesses at 1600 A0. = The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.13 Completed FGS 6262 (High Speed Astrometry - Barnard's Star) The Fine Guidance Sensors were used to make high speed astrometric = observations of Barnard's Star and seven reference stars. The = observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.14 Completed WF/P-2 6254 (GTO Pure Parallel Program - Cycle 5) The WF/PC-2 was use to make random long exposures of high galactic = fields taken in parallel with the prime science observations to obtain a = random sample of galaxies. The observations were executed as scheduled, = and no anomalies were noted. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 18 Successful : 17 The FGS acquisition at 35/022410Z and the re-acquisition at = 35/040700Z failed when the search radius was exceeded.
