HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1578 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 02/26/96 - 0000Z (UTC) 02/27/96 Daily Status Report as of 058/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6363 (The Environments and Host = Galaxies of BL-Lac Objects) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot survey observations to BL-Lac = object MS1258.4+6 and MS0737.9+7 in order to study their environment and = their host galaxies. The goal is to investigate systematic trends in host = galaxy type, unusual morphological features, nearby companion galaxies, = etc. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were = noted. 1.2 Completed WF/PC-2 5931 (Location of Particle Acceleration in Radio = Hot Spots) The WF/PC-2 was used to make signal-to-noise images of 3C111-East = to study the location of particle acceleration in its radio hot spots. = Radio hot spots are just one of many locations where active galactic = nuclei (AGN) phenomena imply the presence of ultra-relativistic particles. = The observations were completed as scheduled, and no problems were = reported. 1.3 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6188 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5 Calibration: = Dark) The WF/PC-2 was used to make internal dark calibration images. The = observations were completed as scheduled, and no problems were reported. 1.4 Completed FOC/96 6306 (Supernova Light Echoes) The Faint Object Camera(f/96) was used to make observations of = supernovae remnant SN1979C in order to study its light echoes. Measuring = the separation of the echo from the site of the supernova gives a direct = measure of the distance to the parent galaxy. The echoes are expected to = be very blue, and highly polarized. The observations were completed as = planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.5 Completed WF/PC-2 6187 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5 Calibration: Earth Flat) The WF/PC-2 was used to make Earth streak flat calibration images. = These streak flats will be used to produce flat fields, to map the OTA = illumination pattern and, in combination with other data, to produce new = superflats. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems = were reported. 1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 5913 (Low-Mass Binaries and Luminosity Fuction) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the low-mass binary = system NGP005 (Late Type Class M dwarf stars). The intent is to determine = why the local stellar luminosity function is flat below Mv=3D12, while = that found from more distant stars falls by an order of magnitude by = Mv=3D14. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies = were noted. 1.7 Completed WF/PC-2 5924 (Nuclear Emission Line Region Associated = with Compact Flat Spectrum) The WF/PC-2 was used to make spectrographic observations of the = nuclear emission region of galaxy NGC-5077 to study its compact flat = spectrum. There is evidence that this jet-produced AGN is powered by = accretion disks feeding massive black hole. The observations were = executed as schedule, and no anomalies were noted. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 9 Successful : 9 Scheduled Reacquisitions : 7 Successful : 7 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled : 19 Successful : 19 2.3 Operations Notes: All of the missing science data on ESTR #1, discussed in = yesterday's report, was eventually recovered. 3.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS: Nothing at this time. /DMH
