HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1596 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 03/21/96 - 0000Z (UTC) 03/22/96 Daily Status Report as of 082/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed WF/PC-2 5939 (Evolution in the Isotropic Properties of = BL Lac Objects) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the BL Lac object = PKS1538+14 in order to study its evolution and isotropic properties. The = observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.2 Completed WF/PC-2 6187 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5 Calibration: Earth Flat) The WF/PC-2 was used to make Earth streak flat calibration images. = These streak flats will be used to produce flat fields, to map the OTA = illumination pattern and, in combination with other data, to produce new = superflats. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems = were reported. 1.3 Completed GHRS/2 5862 (Boron in Very Metal Poor Stars: Production = of Light Elements) The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side Two) was used to make = spectrographic observations of the very metal poor halo star HD84937 = looking for the presence of the element Boron. The data will help = differentiate the proposed production mechanism for boron and beryllium. = A wavelength calibration image was also taken. The observations were = completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.4 Completed GHRS/2 5892 (Physical Conditions in the Galactic Halos = of the Milky Way and NGC-306) The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side Two) was used to make = observations of the radio galaxy/quasar 3C232 in order to study the metal = absorption line system produced in the line of sight by the gas in the = Milky Way and galaxy NGC-3076 halos. The observations were executed as = scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.5 Completed WF/PC-2 5992 (The Host Galaxies and Environments of BL = Lacertae Objects) The WF/PC-2 was used to make short and deep observations of the BL = Lacertae class object OJ287. The short exposures will allow study of the = inner regions of the host galaxy. The longer exposures will allow a = search for faint galaxy companions and any interaction between the faint = companion and the AGN. As reported in HSTAR 5540, the FGS acquisition = for this proposal failed. No other anomalies were noted. 1.6 Completed FOS/BL 5890 (Far-UV Extinction for Deeply Embedded Stars = in Interstellar Clouds.) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Blue Side) was used to make = ultraviolet observations of NGC-2024-05 to measure the UV extinction of a = star which is deeply imbedded in an interstellar cloud. The objective is = to determine the properties of the grains as a function of the depth in = the cloud. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems = were reported. 1.7 Completed WF/PC-2 5971 (HST Medium Deep Survey) The WF/PC-2 was used to make a long exposure medium deep sky = survey observations at latitudes larger than 10 degrees taken in parallel = with the prime science observations. The observations were executed as = scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 4 Successful : 3 One acquisition, at 081/2022Z failed when the search radius was = exceeded. The following reacquisition was successful. HSTAR 5540 was = written.
