HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1597 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 03/22/96 - 0000Z (UTC) 03/25/96 Daily Status Report as of 085/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed WF/PC-2 5971 (HST Medium Deep Survey) The WF/PC-2 was used to make a long exposure medium deep sky = survey observations at latitudes larger than 10 degrees taken in parallel = with the prime science observations. The observations were executed as = scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.2 Completed FOS/RD 6016 (Entrainment and Hotspots in the HH47 = Protostar Jet) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make = observations of Herbig-Haro object HH47. The main purpose is to obtain = spectra of the jet in protostar HH47 to investigate the mass exchange = between the stream and the surrounding medium and to look for differences = between Mach disk emissions and bow shock emissions. A wavelength = calibration image was also taken. A wave length calibration image was = also taken. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no = anomalies were reported. 1.3 Completed Three Sets of WF/PC-2 6253 (Pure Parallel Archive = Program) The WF/PC-2 was used to execute a pure parallel program taking = ultraviolet observations running concurrently with prime science = observations. The intent is to search for extra-galactic sources with = flux excesses at 3000 A0 and galactic sources with excesses at 1600 A0. = The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were = reported. 1.4 Completed WF/PC-2 5849 (Host Galaxies of Luminous Nearby Quasars) The WF/PC-2 was used to make deep exposure observations of host = galaxy PG0953+414 which is known to have a luminous nearby quasar. The = observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.5 Completed Five Sets of FOS/BL 6166 (FOS Cycle 5: Location of = Spectra and Wavelength Calibration) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Blue Side) was used to make = wavelength calibration images to measure the stability of the FOS Blue = Side wavelength scale and spectral locations. Taled calibration = observations was also taken. The observations were completed as planned, = and no anomalies were reported. 1.6 Completed FGS 6047 (Calibrating the Mass Luminosity Relation at = the End of the Main Sequence) The FGS were used to make astrometric observations of star GL748 = and several reference stars as part of a study to determine its mass = luminosity relationship. The purpose is to measure the precise parallax = and relative orbit of its faint companion. The observations were = completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.7 Completed WF/PC-2 5899 (The Central Structure of the = Collapsed-Core Globular Cluster NGC-6283) The WF/PC-2 was used to make deep image observations of the = collapsed-core region of globular cluster NGC-6284 to study its central = structure. The degree of concentration of the core and of different = components will test theories of dynamical evolution of dense stellar = systems. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies = were noted. 1.8 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6187 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5 Calibration: = Earth Flat) The WF/PC-2 was used to make Earth streak flat calibration images. = These streak flats will be used to produce flat fields, to map the OTA = illumination pattern and, in combination with other data, to produce new = superflats. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems = were reported. 1.9 Completed GHRS/1 5891 (Structurally Resolved Abundances and = Depletions in the Rho Oph Cloud) The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side One) was used to make high = resolution spectral observations of star HD147165 which is located within = the Rho Orpiuchi Cloud in order to study its structurally resolved = elemental abundances and depletions in different parts of the cloud. The = observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.10 Completed WF/PC-2 6329 (A Photometric Search for Planets of = Nearby Stars) The WF/PC-2 was used to make photometric observations of nearby = star HD187642 in order to search for planets. The technique involves use = of the Planetary Camera with narrow and wide bandpass filters to measure = photometrically the presence of resolved dark companions. The = observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.11 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6346 (Snapshot Survey of the = Ultraluminous IRAS Galaxy Sample-Part 1 High) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot survey observations of the = ultraluminous IRAS galaxies NGWULIR135 and IR06206-63. These data will = be searched for multiple cores, which imply a merger has occurred, and = for starburst regions. The observations were executed as scheduled, and = no anomalies were noted. 1.12 Completed FOS/RD 6006 (Energy Inputs to the Narrow Line Regions = of Active Galaxies) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make = spectrographic observations of the active Seyfert galaxy NGC-2110 in order= to study its narrow emission line region. The observations were = executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.13 Completed WF/PC-2 5915 (Star Formation Histories of Dwarf = Irregular Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make BVI observations for the isolated = dwarf irregular galaxy DDO69 (class dI) which is located in the local = group in order to study its star formation history. This data will be = used to create color-magnitude and color-color diagrams and maps of = Population I and II stars. The observations were executed as planned, = and no problems were reported. 1.14 Completed GHRS/2/1 6008 (The Atmosphere of IO and Its Interaction = With the Plasma Torus) The High Resolution Spectrograph (Sides One and Two) were used to = make spectrographic observations of the atmosphere of Jupiter's moon Io = during ingress from the planets shadow. This is to study temporal = changes in the emission lines of O and S. The observations were = completed as planned, and no anomalies were noted. 1.15 Completed WF/PC-2 6250 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5 Calibration: Internal = Monitor) The WF/PC-2 was used to make a series on internal calibration = observations. Internal flats, biases, and K-Spot calibration images were = taken. These observations are designed to monitor the health of the = cameras. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies = were noted. 1.16 Completed FOS/BL 6109 (Spectropolarimetry of Low Redshift = Quasars) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Blue Side) was used to make = spectropolargraphic observations of the low redshifted quasar 0743-673. = The wavelength range of interest is from 200 Angstroms below the Lyman = limit to just above Lyman-Alpha. The observations were completed as = planned, and no problems were reported. 1.17 Completed WF/PC-2 6365 (A Snapshot Survey For Companions and = Clusters around Wolf-Rayet Stars) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot observations of Wolf-Rayet = star WR38 in order to look for companion stars and clusters. Photometry = was performed on the Wolf-Rayet star and associated stars. The = observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.18 Completed WF/PC-2 5992 (The Host Galaxies and Environments of BL = Lacertae Objects) The WF/PC-2 was used to make short and deep observations of the BL = Lacertae class object OJ287. The short exposures will allow study of the = inner regions of the host galaxy. The longer exposures will allow a = search for faint galaxy companions and any interaction between the faint = companion and the AGN. The observations were executed as scheduled, and = no anomalies were noted. 1.19 Completed FOC/96 6645 (UV-Optical spectra of Middle Age Pulsars: = Thermal VS. Non-Thermal) The Faint Object Camera (f/96) was used to make both ultraviolet = and optical deep observations of the middle aged isolated pulsar = PSR-B0656. From earlier HST/FOC images of this object, it was determined = that most of the flux is non-thermal. The purpose of these deep images = is to measure the flux in several bandpasses. The observations were = completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.20 Completed FOC/96 6246 (Image and Polarization Studies of Radio = Galaxies and Jets) The Faint Object Camera (f/96) was used to make polarization images= of radio galaxy PKS0812+02 in order to study its physical structure and = optical jets. The images will be compared with the radio map at similar = resolutions. The observations were completed as planned, and no = anomalies were reported. 1.21 Completed WF/PC-2 6235 (High Resolution Imaging of Radio Galaxies = at Redshift Z~1.0) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of faint radio galaxy = 3C280 which is known to have a redshift of about one. This is to attempt = to determine the cause of the alignment of the blue-excess along the = radio axis. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no = anomalies were noted. 1.22 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6363 (The Environments and Host = Galaxies of BL-Lac Objects) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot survey observations of = BL-Lac object 1ES0927+50 in order to study its environment and its host = galaxies. The goal is to investigate systematic trends in host galaxy = type, unusual morphological features, nearby companion galaxies, etc. = The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.23 Completed FGS 6036 (Detection and Mass Determination of Low Mass = Companions to nearby M Dwarf) The FGSs were used in both the POS and TRANS Modes to make = astrometric observations of low mass companions to M class dwarf star = GL791 and four reference stars. This will lead to a mass determination = for the stars. The observations were completed as planned, and no = anomalies were noted. 1.24 Completed GHRS/1 6083 (The Expanding Chromosphere of a Star) The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side One) was used to make = Lyman-Alpha emission spectrographic observations of the A class star = HD50241 in order to study its expanding chromosphere.
