HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1599 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 03/26/96 - 0000Z (UTC) 03/27/96 Daily Status Report as of 087/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed Three Sets of FOS/BL 6166 (FOS Cycle 5: Location of = Spectra and Wavelength Calibration) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Blue Side) was used to make = wavelength calibration images to measure the stability of the FOS Blue = Side wavelength scale and spectral locations. Taled calibration = observations were also taken. The observations were completed as = planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.2 Completed WF/PC-2 6679 (HST Investigation of a Bright New Comet) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the bright new comet = Hyakutake (aka, The Great Comet of 1996). The images will yield = information of the nuclear size and coma near the nucleus. among the = goals are the abundance determination of volatile components, and the = search for previously undetected species. The FGS acquisition for this = proposal, at 086/011752Z failed. HSTAR 5548 was written. No further = anomalies were noted. 1.3 Completed FOS/RD 6150 (Detecting the Hydroxyl Radical in the = Jovian Magnetosphere) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make = observations of the abundance of OH in the Jovian magnetosphere near the = torus of the moon Europa. Near the beginning of this two-and-a-half hour = proposal, there was an approximate 45-minute loss of lock, and the take = data flag was down. HSTAR 5549 was written. Otherwise, the observations = were completed as planned, and no further anomalies were noted. 1.4 Completed Four Sets of WF/PC-2 6188 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5 Calibration: = Dark) The WF/PC-2 was used to make internal dark calibration images. = The observations were completed as scheduled, and no problems were = reported. 1.5 Completed FGS 6151 (Masses of Pre-main Sequence Stars: Cycle 4 = GO/CAL) The FGSs were used to make observations of the pre-main sequence = binary star ZZ-Tau located in the Taurus star forming region. The FGS = data will provide the apparent orbits needed to compute the total mass of = the system. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no = anomalies were noted. 1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 6253 (Pure Parallel Archive Program) The WF/PC-2 was used to execute a pure parallel program taking = ultraviolet observations running concurrently with prime science = observations. The intent is to search for extra-galactic sources with flu= x excesses at 3000 A0 and galactic sources with excesses at 1600 A0. The = FHST update immediately prior to this observation failed, but no effect = to this proposal was reported. The observations were completed as = planned, and no problems were noted. 1.7 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6363 (The Environments and Host = Galaxies of BL-Lac Objects) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot survey observations of = BL-Lac object 1ES1533+53 in order to study its environment and its host = galaxy. The goal is to investigate systematic trends in host galaxy = type, unusual morphological features, nearby companion galaxies, etc. = The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.8 Completed WF/PC-2 6346 (Snapshot Survey of the Ultraluminous IRAS = Galaxy Sample-Part 1 High) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot survey observations of the = ultraluminous IRAS galaxy QDOTULIR13. These data will be searched for = multiple cores, which imply a merger has occurred, and for starburst regio= ns. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were = noted. 1.9 Completed WF/PC-2 6250 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5 Calibration: Internal = Monitor) The WF/PC-2 was used to make a series on internal calibration = observations. Internal flats, biases, and K-Spot calibration images were = taken. These observations are designed to monitor the health of the = cameras. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies = were noted. 1.10 Completed FGS 6238 (Companion to GL6230) The FGSs were used to make POS and TRANS mode astrometric = observations of star GL623 (aka, Gleise 623) looking for possible = companions. Five other reference stars were also used. From these data = the precise parallax, barycentic orbits, and accurate masses of the star = and its companion will be determined. The observations were completed as = schedule, and no anomalies were reported. 1.11 Completed WF/PC-2 5997 (The Cores of Elliptical Galaxies in the = Coma Cluster) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the large elliptical = galaxy NGC-4827 which is located in the Coma Cluster. The purpose is to = study the luminosity profiles in the central nuclear region. The = observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.12 Completed FOS/BL 5460 (Constraints on Massive Star Evolution from = Carbon and Oxygen Abundance) The FOS (Blue Side) was used to observe BR93-FIX to obtain UV = spectra of several Wolf-Rayet stars in the LMC to determine the C/He and = O/C ratios. The observation was completed as scheduled, and no problems = were reported. 1.13 Completed S/C 5582 (FOC/48 Monthly Activation (Camera Section = Only): Cycle 4) This proposal was executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were = noted. 1.14 Completed WF/PC-2 5971 (HST Medium Deep Survey) The WF/PC-2 was used to make a long exposure medium deep sky = survey observation at latitudes larger than 10 degrees taken in parallel = with the prime science observations. The observations were executed as = scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.15 Completed FOS/RD 6167 (FOS Cycle 5: Dark Monitoring) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make several = dark calibration images. All exposures were internals. All spectra was = done in the image mode. The observations were completed as planned, and = no problems were reported. 1.16 Completed WF/PC-2 5982 (Imaging of a Complete Sample of the = Nearest Infrared Quasars) The WF/PC-2 was used to make two color observations of the nearby = infrared quasar (IR QSO) IRAS12071. It is believed that this IR QSO = resulted from the merger of two gas-rich galaxies. The observations were = executed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 6 Successful : 6 Scheduled Reacquisitions : 7 Successful : 7 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled : 11 Successful : 10 The update at 087/0725Z failed. 2.3 Operations Notes: There were no operational problems. 3.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS: Nothing at this time. /DMH
