HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1603 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 04/01/96 - 0000Z (UTC) 04/02/96 Daily Status Report as of 093/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed WF/PC-2 6183 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5 Calibration: Decon) The WF/PC-2 was used to make some internal flat, K-Spot, and dark = calibration images. The purpose is to define decontamination procedures = to be run during Cycle 5. The calibration observations were completed as = scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.2 Completed WF/PC-2/FOS/BL 6679 (HST Investigation of a Bright New = Comet) Both the WF/PC-2 and the Faint Object Spectrograph (Blue Side) = were used to make observations of the bright new comet Hyakutake (aka, = The Great Comet of 1996). The images will yield information of the = nuclear size and coma near the nucleus. Among the goals are the = abundance determination of volatile components, and the search for = previously undetected species. A dark calibration image was also taken. = The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were noted. 1.3 Completed FGS 5657 (Duplicity Among Hyades Stars: Cycle 4 High) The FGSs (TRANS-Mode) were used to make astrometric observations = of star VA529 located in the Hyades cluster in an attempt to find a close = binary. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies = were noted. 1.4 Completed FOS/BL 6244 (HR 4796A: A Possible Protoplanet?) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Blue Side) was used to make = observations of object RHY182 which is thought to be a possible = protoplanet system. This star is a main sequence A type star with more = circumstellar dust than is located around Beta Pic. The observations = were completed as planned and no anomalies were reported. 1.5 Completed FGS 6326 (Monitor the Long Term Stability of FGS#3 - = Early 1996) FGS#3 was used to make astrometric observations of star OF956 and = other nearby standard stars which are located in the M-35 open star = cluster in order to test the long term stability of the FGS unit. The = observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.6 Completed FGS 6047 (Calibrating the Mass Luminosity Relation at = the End of the Main Sequence) The FGS were used to make astrometric observations of star GL234 = as part of a study to determine its mass luminosity relationship. The = purpose is to measure the precise parallax and relative orbit of its = faint companion. The observations were completed as planned, and no = problems were reported. 1.7 Completed WF/PC-2/FOS/RD 6613 (The Origin of C_2 in Comets) The WF-PC-2 and the Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used = to make spectrographic observations of the new comet Hyakutake in order = to study the origin of C-2 within the comet. One of the acquisitions for = this proposal, at 092/2332Z, failed to fine lock backup on FGS-2 only. = HSTAR 5558 was written. The observations were executed as scheduled, and = no anomalies were noted. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 14 Successful : 13 As documented in HSTAR 5558, the acquisition at 092/2232Z failed = to fine lock backup on FGS-2 only. Scheduled Reacquisitions : 0 Successful : 0 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled : 3 Successful : 3 2.3 Operations Notes: A TTR was written for a 46-second non-recoverable 32K data loss = due to a problem with the MABE controller at STGT. 3.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS: Nothing at this time. /DMH
