HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1604 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 04/02/96 - 0000Z (UTC) 04/03/96 Daily Status Report as of 094/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed FOS/RD 6613 (The Origin of C_2 in Comets) The Faint Object spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make = spectrographic observations of the Mulliken and Swan bands of C_2 in the = new comet Hyakutake. Observations were taken at five relative positions = within the nucleus of the comet. The observations were executed as = scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.2 Completed Three Sets of WF/PC-2 6183 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5 Calibration: = Decon) The WF/PC-2 was used to make some internal flat, K-Spot, and dark = calibration images. The purpose is to define decontamination procedures = to be run during Cycle 5. The calibration observations were completed as = scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.3 Completed WF/PC-2 6259 (Imaging of Near Nuclear Plasma in Comets) The WF/PC-2 was used to make high resolution, multi-color = observations of the comet Hyakutake in order to study the plasma near the = comet's nuclear region. The intent is to study the interaction of the = comet with the solar wind, that is, to determine the structure and = evolution of the plasma. The observations were executed as scheduled, = and no anomalies were noted. 1.4 Completed WF/PC-2 6424 (Calibrations of Stellar Evolutionary Ages = and Variations in the LMF) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the relatively old = open cluster NGC-2420 to determine the luminosity and mass function (LMF) = of the white dwarfs and low mass (i.e., red) stars and to make a = calibration study of stellar evolutionary ages. The observations was exec= uted as scheduled and no anomalies were noted. 1.5 Completed FOS/RD/BL 6043 (The Interaction of Supernovae with their = Curcumstellar medium) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Both Red and Blue Sides) was used = to make ultraviolet observations of Type 3 supernova remnant SN1988Z to = study its interaction with the curcumstellar medium and the supernova = blast wave, which itself is a product of the stellar wind from the = supernova progenitor. The observations were executed as scheduled, and = no anomalies were noted. 1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 6366 (The Early Onset of Asymmetric Outflow = During the Planetary Nebula formation) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the planetary nebula = RW-LMI in order to study its asymmetric outflow during its formation. = The purpose of these exposures was to determine the characteristics of = the mass loss that occurs as a star leaves the asymptotic giant branch. = The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were = reported. 1.7 Completed WF/PC-2 6736 (A comprehensive Study of H Ly-Alpha Line = Profile and Water) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the comet Hyakutake = in order to make a comprehensive study of hydrogen, Lyman Alpha, and = water in the comet. ,The results should improve the understanding of how = water is produced and destroyed in comets. The observations were = completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 8 Successful : 7 The acquisition at 040/084023Z failed to single FGS backup using = FGS #2.
