HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1606 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 04/04/96 - 0000Z (UTC) 04/05/96 Daily Status Report as of 096/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed WF/PC-2/HRS-1/FOS/BL 6736 (A Comprehensive Study of H = Lyman Alpha Line Profile and Water) The WF/PC-2, High Resolution Spectrograph (Side One), and the = Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) all were used to make observations = of the comet Hyakutake in order to make a comprehensive study of hydrogen = Lyman Alpha and water in the comet. The results should improve the = understanding of how water is produced and destroyed in comets. The = observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.2 Completed FGS 6274 (Linking the HIPPARCOS to the Extragalactic = Referance Frame) The FGS#3 was used to make astrometeric observations of = extra-galactic objects 1435+638IN, 320-REF, INCA221-98, and several other = reference stars in order to help link the HIPPARCOS satellite reference = frame to that of the HST. The observations were completed as planned, = and no anomalies were reported. 1.3 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6253 (Pure Parallel Archive Program) The WF/PC-2 was used to execute a pure parallel program taking = ultraviolet observations running concurrently with prime science = observations. The intent is to search for extra-galactic sources with = flux excesses at 3000 A0 and galactic sources with excesses at 1600 A0. = The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were = reported. 1.4 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6363 (The Environments and Host = Galaxies of BL-Lac Objects) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot survey observations of = BL-Lac objects PKS2131-02 and PG1246+586 in order to study their = environment and their host galaxies. The goal is to investigate = systematic trends in host galaxy type, unusual morphological features, = nearby companion galaxies, etc. The observations were executed as = scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.5 Completed FOS/RD 6044 (Carbon in the ISM of Spirals) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to obtain = ultraviolet and optical spectra of the H II regions in spiral galaxy = NGC-5455. The intent is to derive the carbon abundances and = carbon/oxygen ratios at several positions in this galaxy. The = observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 5982 (Imaging of a Complete Sample of the = Nearest Infrared Quasars) The WF/PC-2 was used to make two color observations of the nearby = infrared quasar (IR QSO) IRAS17044. It is believed that this IR QSO = resulted from the merger of two gas-rich galaxies. The observations were = executed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.7 Completed WF/PC-2 6353 (A Snapshot Emission Line Imaging Survey of = Very Low Excitation Planetary Nebulas) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot observations as part to an = emission line survey of the very low excitation planetary nebula = PK320-09D1 (Class PNe). This target was selected based on the O III/H = alpha line flux ratio. The observations were executed as scheduled, and = no anomalies were noted. 1.8 Completed WF/PC-2 6849 (A Photometric Search For Planets of Nearby = Stars: GTO Prop. Continuation) The WF/PC-2 was used to make a photometric search of the nearby = star L145-141 to look for possible planets. Images through both the wide = and narrow-band filters were obtained. The observations were completed = as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.9 Completed FOC/48 6200 (F/48 Geometric Correction and Plate Scale: = Cycle 5) The Faint Object Camera (f/48) was used to make observations of = test cluster NGC-104 (aka, 47 Tuc) in order to make geometric corrections = to the plate scale calibrations. This cluster has been used in the past = to calibrate the geometric distortion and plate scale in the F/96 relay. = The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were = reported. 1.10 Completed WF/P-2 6254 (GTO Pure Parallel Program - Cycle 5) The WF/PC-2 was use to make random long exposures of high galactic = fields taken in parallel with the prime science observations to obtain a = random sample of galaxies. The observations were executed as scheduled, = and no anomalies were noted. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 8 Successful : 8 Scheduled Reacquisitions : 6 Successful : 6 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled : 13 Successful : 13 2.3 Operations Notes: A quiet operational day was reported by operations personnel. 3.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS: Nothing at this time. /DMH
