HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1623 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 04/29/96 - 0000Z (UTC) 04/30/96 Daily Status Report as of 121/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed WF/PC-2 6708 (Multiwavelength Imaging of Two Luminous = Blue Compact Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make multiwavelength (i.e., five different = wavelengths) images of the luminous blue compact galaxy ESO338-IG0. The = images will be used to study star formation and dust distribution in this = young galaxy. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no = anomalies were noted. 1.2 Completed Two Sets of GHRS/2 6172 (CRIMP2: Cycle 5 = Condensed-Regimen Integrated Monitoring Program) The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side Two) was used to obtain = darks, internal flats (in photoscan mode), wavelength calibrations and = observations of standard star BD+28D4211. This includes detector = calibration, sensitivity monitoring, and wavelength monitoring. The obser= vations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.3 Completed WF/PC-2 6235 (High Resolution Imaging of Radio Galaxies = at Redshift Z~1.0) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of faint radio galaxy = 3C241 which is known to have a redshift of about one. This is to attempt = to determine the cause of the alignment of the blue-excess along the = radio axis. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no = anomalies were noted. 1.4 Completed WF/PC-2 6187 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5 Calibration: Earth Flat) The WF/PC-2 was used to make Earth streak flat calibration images. = These streak flats will be used to produce flat fields, to map the OTA = illumination pattern and, in combination with other data, to produce new = superflats. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems = were reported. 1.5 Completed WF/PC-2 5996 (The Morphology of Field Galaxies at High = Redshifts) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of several field = galaxies (Field-1000) in order to study their morphologies. The = observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 5972 (Determination of the Extragalactic = Distance Scale) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the galaxy NGC-4725 = looking for standard candle Cepheid variable stars. The purpose of these = observations is to help estimate the Hubble constant with an accuracy of = 10%. T he observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were = noted. 1.7 Completed WF/PC-2 5997 (The Cores of Elliptical Galaxies in the = Coma Cluster) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the large elliptical = galaxy IC3959 which is located in the Coma Cluster. The purpose is to = study the luminosity profiles in the central nuclear region. The = observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.8 Completed WF/PC-2 5913 (Low-Mass Binaries and Luminosity Fuction) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the low-mass binary = system NGP011 (Late Type Class M dwarf stars). The intent is to = determine why the local stellar luminosity function is flat below = Mv=3D12, while that found from more distant stars falls by an order of = magnitude by Mv=3D14. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no= anomalies were noted. 1.9 Completed WF/PC-2 6365 (A Snapshot Survey For Companions and = Clusters around Wolf-Rayet Stars) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot observations of Wolf-Rayet = star WR56 in order to look for companion stars and clusters. Photometry = was performed on the Wolf-Rayet stars and associated stars. As reported = in 2.1, the FGS acquisition for this proposal failed. No further = anomalies were reported. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 7 Successful : 6 As documented in HSTAR 5588, the single axis FGS primary = acquisition at 120/234254Z failed. Scheduled Reacquisitions : 4 Successful : 4 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled : 10 Successful : 10 2.3 Operations Notes: There were no operational problems. 3.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS: GSFC Internal Simulation #4 (EVA #2) will be conducted on = Thursday. /DMH
