HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1626 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 05/02/96 - 0000Z (UTC) 05/03/96 Daily Status Report as of 124/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed Two Sets of GHRS/1 6171 (CRIMP1: Cycle 5 = Condensed-Regimen Integrated Monitoring Program) The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side One) was used to obtain = darks, internal flats (in photoscan mode), wavelength calibrations and = observations of standard star BD+28D4211. This includes detector = calibration, sensitivity monitoring, and wavelength monitoring. During = the first iteration of this proposal, near the beginning at 123/000855Z, = there was a status buffer Exec 309 message, meaning that the output of a = standard header packet or an SI unique data log was requested while = science data output was not permitted by the ground. Later, at = 123/002338Z, there was an HRS 105 status buffer message stating that the = science observation was temporarily ended because there were too many = consecutive lines of science data having bad data quality. HSTARs 5596 = and 5597 were written for these occurrences. Otherwise, the observations = were executed as scheduled, and no further anomalies were noted. 1.2 Completed WF/PC-2 6187 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5 Calibration: Earth Flat) The WF/PC-2 was used to make Earth streak flat calibration images. = These streak flats will be used to produce flat fields, to map the OTA = illumination pattern and, in combination with other data, to produce new = superflats. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems = were reported. 1.3 Completed WF/PC-2 6184 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5 Photometric Calibration = Monitor UV/OPT STD) The WF/PC-2 was used to make ultraviolet and optical observations = of standard star GRW+70D582 in order to monitor the photometric = calibrations of the camera and to check for decontamination. The = observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.4 Completed FGS 6049 (Monitoring the Size and Shape of Mira Type = Stars) The FGSs were used to make astrometric observations of the Mira = class star HD120285 in order to study its size and shape during different = phases of its pulsation cycle. The observations were completed as = planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.5 Completed WF/PC-2 6253 (Pure Parallel Archive Program) The WF/PC-2 was used to execute a pure parallel program taking = ultraviolet observations running concurrently with prime science = observations. The intent is to search for extra-galactic sources with = flux excesses at 3000 A0 and galactic sources with excesses at 1600 A0. = The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were = reported. 1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 6579 (The Cosmic Velocity of the Great Attractor)= The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the galaxy NGC-4709 = which is located in the Centaurus Cluster. The objective is to measure = its distance, using the "surface brightness fluctuation" method. When = combined with the radial velocity, these measurements will allow the = investigator to determine whether the Centaurus Cluster is falling in to = the Great Attractor. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no = anomalies were noted. 1.7 Completed WF/PC-2 5920 (Extragalactic Globular Cluster System) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations to compile a catalogue = of the extragalactic globular clusters in galaxy NGC-4472. A luminosity = function will be derived which should be complete down to the 27th = magnitude in V. The observations were completed as planned, and no = problems were reported. 1.8 Completed FOS/RD 6167 (FOS Cycle 5: Dark Monitoring) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make several = dark calibration images. All exposures were internals. All spectra was = done in the image mode. The observations were completed as planned, and = no problems were reported. 1.9 Completed WF/PC-2 6189 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5 Calibration: Internal = Monitor - Vis Flats) The WF/PC-2 was used to make internal visual flat calibration = images. Both photometric and narrow-band filters were used. The = observations were executed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.10 Completed WF/PC-2 5999 (The Nuclear Structure of S0 Galaxies: A = PC Imaging Survey) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of S0 class galaxy = NGC-4431 in order to study its nuclear structure. This is a part of a = large survey of S0, E/S0, and S0/a class galaxies. The targets will = cover a wide range in luminosity and environment. The observations were = completed as planned, and no anomalies were noted. 1.11 Completed FOS/BL 5921 (FOS Observations of Ionized Gas in Two = Early-Type Galaxies) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Blue Side) was used to make = observations of the early type galaxy NGC-4486 in order to study its = ionized gas which contains Si IV, C IV, and N V. At 123/212705, as = reported in HSTAR 5599, there was an FOS target acquisition failure. The = status buffer message indicated that there were no stars in the FOS = aperture. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems = were reported. 1.12 Completed WF/PC-2 5971 (HST Medium Deep Survey) The WF/PC-2 was used to make a long exposure medium deep sky = survey observations at latitudes larger than 10 degrees taken in parallel = with the prime science observations. The observations were executed as = scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 5 Successful : 5 Scheduled Reacquisitions : 10 Successful : 10 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled : 12 Successful : 12 2.3 Operations Notes: HST operations returned to the MOR area at 123/2345Z after the = completion of GSFC Simulation #4 (EVA #2). 3.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS: Nothing at this time. /DMH
