HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1628 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 05/06/96 - 0000Z (UTC) 05/07/96 Daily Status Report as of 128/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed Five Sets of WF/PC-2 6188 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5 Calibration: = Dark) The WF/PC-2 was used to make internal dark calibration images. = The observations were completed as scheduled, and no problems were = reported. 1.2 Completed WF/PC-2 6363 (The Environments and Host Galaxies of = BL-Lac Objects) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot survey observations of = BL-Lac object PKS0521-36 in order to study its environment and its host = galaxies. The goal is to investigate systematic trends in host galaxy = type, unusual morphological features, nearby companion galaxies, etc. = The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.3 Completed FOC/96 6416 (FOC Imaging of the Dusty Envelopes of = Mass-Losing Supergiants) The Faint Object Camera (f/96) was used to make images of the = dusty envelope surrounding the variable mass-losing supergiant star = VY-Cam. This is to define the role that mass loss plays in determining = the fate of supernova (SN) progenitors and SN remnants. Current stellar e= volution theory indicates that all stars with masses larger than 10 solar = masses will produce a SN. The observations were executed as scheduled, = and no anomalies were noted. 1.4 Completed Four Sets of WF/PC-2 5971 (HST Medium Deep Survey) The WF/PC-2 was used to make long exposure, medium-deep sky survey = observations at latitudes larger than 10 degrees taken in parallel with = the prime science observations. The observations were executed as = scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.5 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6191 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 Calibration: = UV Flats) The WF/PC-2 was used to take some ultraviolet calibrations flats = using several different filters. A dark calibration image was also taken = to check for possible after images. No problems were reported. 1.6 Completed FOC/96 6349 (Snapshot search for High Redshift QSOs with = Far-UV Flux) The Faint Object Camera (f/96) was used to make snapshot images of = the quasi-stellar object Q0850+179. This is to determine if this high = redshifted object has a far ultraviolet flux. The observations were = executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.7 Completed FOS/BL 6781 (Soft X-Rays and the UV Spectra of a = Complete QSO Sample) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Blue Side) was used to obtain = ultraviolet spectra of the low-Z quasi-stellar object PG0947+396. The = ionization continuum of this object has been studied using the ROSAT = satellite. The strengths and line profiles of strong and weak = ultraviolet emission and absorption lines and the ultraviolet continuum = were studied. The observations were completed as planned and no = anomalies were reported. 1.8 Complete Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6481 (Vesta at Perihelion) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the asteroid 4-Vesta = while it is at perihelion opposition. Several different filters were = used as diagnostics of mineralogy and to maximize albedo contrasts. The = observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.9 Completed WF/PC-2 5924 (Nuclear Emission Line Region Associated = with Compact Flat Spectrum) The WF/PC-2 was used to make spectrographic observations of the = nuclear emission region of galaxy IC989 to study its compact flat = spectrum. There is evidence that this jet-produced AGN is powered by = accretion disks feeding massive black hole. The observations were = executed as schedule, and no anomalies were noted. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 6 Successful : 6 As reported in HSTAR 5601, the acquisition at 128/0716Z failed to = fine lock back-up on one FGS only. Scheduled Reacquisitions : 7 Successful : 7 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled : 21 Successful : 21 2.3 Operations Notes: There were no reported problems. 3.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS: Nothing at this time. /DMH
