HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1629 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 05/07/96 - 0000Z (UTC) 05/08/96 Daily Status Report as of 129/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed GHRS/2 6169 (HRS Eschelle Wavelength Monitor) The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side 2) was used to calibrate = carrousel function, Y-deflection, resolving power, sensitivity, and = scattered light for both eschelle-A and eschelle-B. All exposures are = internals. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems = were reported. 1.2 Completed WF/PC-2 6184 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5 Photometric Calibration = Monitor UV/OPT STD) The WF/PC-2 was used to make ultraviolet and optical observations = of standard star GRW+70D582 in order to monitor the photometric = calibrations of the camera and to check for decontamination. The = observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.3 Completed Four Sets of WF/PC-2 6187 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5 Calibration: = Earth Flat) The WF/PC-2 was used to make Earth streak flat calibration images. = These streak flats will be used to produce flat fields, to map the OTA = illumination pattern and, in combination with other data, to produce new = superflats. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems = were reported. 1.4 Completed WF/PC-2 5997 (The Cores of Elliptical Galaxies in the = Coma Cluster) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the large elliptical = galaxies NGC-4876 and Gal-125942 which are located in the Coma Cluster. = The purpose is to study the luminosity profiles in the central nuclear = region. Approximately half-way through this one-hour proposal, a primary = acquisition failed to fine lock back-up on one FGS only. HSTAR 5601 was = written. No further anomalies were noted. 1.5 Completed FOS/BL 6750 (Spectropolarimetry of Ultraviolet Continuum = and Line Emissions in Binary Systems) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Blue Side) was used to make = ultraviolet continuum and emission line spectropolaragraphic observations = of the eclipsing binary star system TT-Hya. The observations were taken = during the primary eclipse. The observations were executed as scheduled = and no anomalies were noted. 1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 6253 (Pure Parallel Archive Program) The WF/PC-2 was used to execute a pure parallel program taking = ultraviolet observations running concurrently with prime science = observations. The intent is to search for extra-galactic sources with = flux excesses at 3000 A0 and galactic sources with excesses at 1600 A0. = The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were = reported. 1.7 Completed WF/PC-2 6431 (Determination of the Extragalactric = Distance Scale) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the galaxy NGC-4548 = to be used in measuring the periods of Cepheid variable stars within this = galaxy. This will allow for a more accurate estimate of the distances to = these galaxies through the period-luminosity relation for the Cepheid star= s. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were = noted. 1.8 Completed FGS 6274 (Linking the HIPPARCOS to the Extragalactic = Referance Frame) The FGS#3 was used to make astrometeric observations of = extra-galactic objects NEWEGOC-50, 420-REF, NEWHIP-50 and several other = reference stars in order to help link the HIPPARCOS satellite reference = frame to that of the HST. The observations were completed as planned, = and no anomalies were reported. 1.9 Completed FOC/96 5960 (Identifying the Polarization Seyfert 1 = Mirror in Markarian 463) The Faint Object Camera (F/96) was used to make polarized light = observations of Markarian galaxy MARK463 which is a Class 2 Seyfert = galaxy that displays Seyfert Class 1 spectrum in polarized light. The = observations were completed as scheduled, and no problems were reported. 1.10 Completed Four Sets of WF/PC-2 5964 (Detecting Emission Lines at = Half the Hubble Time) The WF/PC-2 was used as part of a parallel program to make observat= ions which are used to search for emission lines in distant clusters of = galaxies. The objective is to study star formation at Z=3D 0.75. The = observations were completed as planned and no problems were reported. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 6 Successful : 6 Scheduled Reacquisitions : 8 Successful : 8 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled : 17 Successful : 17 2.3 Operations Notes: HST operations personnel experienced a quiet day. 3.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS: Nothing at this time. /DMH
