HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1631 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 05/09/96 - 0000Z (UTC) 05/10/96 Daily Status Report as of 131/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed WF/PC-2 6107 (Dynamics and Ages of Nuclear Stellar Disks = in Virgo E/S0 Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the E/S0 class galaxy = NGC-4342 which is located in the Virgo Cluster in order to study its age = and its thin nuclear stellar disk. The images will also be examined for = population differences between the disk and that of the host galaxy. A = wave length calibration image was also taken. The observations were = completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.2 Completed WF/PC-2 6296 (Deep-Narrow Band Imaging of M-87: A Close = Look at the Disk of Ionized Gas) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the large elliptical = galaxy in Virgo M-87 (aka, NGC-4486) to obtain deep emission line = exposures of the disk and filaments in its core. It has been = demonstrated that a disk of ionized gas is fueling a massive black hole = in its core. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no = anomalies were noted. 1.3 Completed WF/PC-2 6557 (WF/PC-2 Imaging of Intermediate Redshift = Absorption Selected Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the galaxy Q0843-FIEL = where a halo appears to be absorbing light from the background = quasi-stellar object (QSO). The observations were completed as planned, = and no problems were reported. 1.4 Completed GHRS/1/2 6413 (High Velocity Thermal Shock Instabilities = in the Vela Supernova Remnant) The High Resolution Spectrograph (Both Sides One and Two) were = used to make high resolution and high signal to noise ratio observations = of the star HD74194. Ultraviolet light from this star passes through the = Vela supernova remnant (SNR) and the absorption lines can be used to = study high velocity thermal shock instabilities in the nebula. The = observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were noted. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 6 Successful : 6 Scheduled Reacquisitions : 6 Successful : 6 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled : 17 Successful : 17 2.3 Operations Notes: There were no reported problems. 3.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS: The formal run of SMGT-35 (FSS) for the second servicing mission = will be conducted today. /DMH
