HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1638 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 05/20/96 - 0000Z (UTC) 05/21/96 Daily Status Report as of 142/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed WF/PC-2 6364 (Snapshot Survey of Proto-Planetary Nebulae = and AGB Stars) The WF/PC-2 was used to make some snapshot survey observations of = protoplanetary nebular system IRAS0629 to study its circumstellar = envelope. The purpose is to discern the evolutionary sequence that = produces axially-symmetric planetary nebulae. The observations were = executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.2 Completed Four Sets of WF/PC-2 6188 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5 Calibration: = Dark) The WF/PC-2 was used to make internal dark calibration images. . = During the last iteration of this proposal, the losses of lock mentioned = in 2.1 occurred. Otherwise, the observations were completed as = scheduled, and no further problems were reported. 1.3 Completed FOS/BL 6781 (Soft X-Rays and the UV Spectra of a = Complete QSO Sample) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Blue Side) was used to obtain = ultraviolet spectra of the low-Z quasi-stellar object PG1309+355. The = ionization continuum of this object has been studied using the ROSAT = satellite. The strengths and line profiles of strong and weak = ultraviolet emission and absorption lines and the ultraviolet continuum = were studied. The observations were completed as planned and no = anomalies were reported. 1.4 Completed WF/PC-2 6187 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5 Calibration: Earth Flat) The WF/PC-2 was used to make Earth streak flat calibration images. = These streak flats will be used to produce flat fields, to map the OTA = illumination pattern and, in combination with other data, to produce new = superflats. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems = were reported. 1.5 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6363 (The Environments and Host = Galaxies of BL-Lac Objects) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot survey observations of = BL-Lac object 1ES1028+51 in order to study its environment and its host = galaxy. The goal is to investigate systematic trends in host galaxy = type, unusual morphological features, nearby companion galaxies, etc. = The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 5844 (HST Investigation of a Bright, New Comet) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the bright new comet = Hale-Bopp (aka, Comet C/1995 O1). The images will yield information of = the nuclear size and coma near the nucleus. During this proposal, the = losses of lock mentioned in 2.1 occurred. No other anomalous activity = was noted. 1.7 Completed FOS/RD/BL 6017 (Soft X-Ray Transients, Outburst in Black = Hole Accretion Disks) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Both the Blue and Red Sides) were = used to make target of opportunity observations of the cataclysmic = contact-binary star J1655-40 which is known to show soft X-ray = transients. These outburst are believed to be caused by the accretion = disk surrounding a black hole. The observations were completed as = scheduled, and no problems were reported. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 5 Successful : 5 Scheduled Reacquisitions : 11 Successful : 11 As noted in HSTAR 5616, there were repeated losses of lock = beginning at 141/220211Z that continued throughtout the T3 slew. 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled : 11 Successful : 11 2.3 Operations Notes: During the tape recorder dumps at 141/1616Z and 141/1747Z, there = were three and seven poly errors respectively. During the re-dump at = 142/031Z, there were three poly errors. All dumps were performed on the = 707 line. The effects of these errors on science data is currently = unknown. 3.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS: Nothing at this time. /DMH
