HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1639 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 05/21/96 - 0000Z (UTC) 05/22/96 Daily Status Report as of 143/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed Three Sets of WF/PC-2 6363 (The Environments and Host = Galaxies of BL-Lac Objects) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot survey observations of = BL-Lac objects ZW-187, GB1011+496, and PKS1538+14 in order to study their = environments and their host galaxies. The goal is to investigate = systematic trends in host galaxy type, unusual morphological features, = nearby companion galaxies, etc. The observations were executed as = scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.2 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6359 (Core Properties of the Bulges = of Spiral Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot survey observations of = spiral galaxy NGC-3928 in order to study its central bulge. The aim is = to investigate the core properties, correlations with global galactic = properties, and the frequency of occurrence of multiple and/or = miscentered nuclei. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no = anomalies were noted. 1.3 Completed FOS/RD 6007 (Comparison of Large Scale Structures in QSO = Absorbers and Galaxies) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make = observations of Lyman-Alpha absorber QSO CSO173 to do a comparison study = of its large scale structure. This target was selected as a deep, = redshifted galaxy from a survey which already exists. The observations = were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.4 Completed Three Sets of WF/PC-2 6609 (The WF/PC-2 B-Band Parallel = Survey: A Systematic and Synoptic Study ) The WF/PC-2 was used to make B-Band survey observations in = parallel with the prime science observations. A total of 216 exposures = will be taken over a period of time to make a statistical study of the = formation and evolution of the galaxies. The observations were executed = as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.5 Completed Three Sets of WF/PC-2 6187 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5 Calibration: = Earth Flat) The WF/PC-2 was used to make Earth streak flat calibration images. = These streak flats will be used to produce flat fields, to map the OTA = illumination pattern and, in combination with other data, to produce new = superflats. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems = were reported. 1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 6250 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5 Calibration: Internal = Monitor) The WF/PC-2 was used to make a series of internal calibration = observations. Internal flats, biases, and K-Spot calibration images were = taken. These observations are designed to monitor the health of the = cameras. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies = were noted. 1.7 Completed WF/PC-2 6431 (Determination of the Extragalactric = Distance Scale) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the galaxy NGC-4548 = to be used in measuring the periods of Cepheid variable stars within this = galaxy. This will allow for a more accurate estimate of the distances to = these galaxies through the period-luminosity relation for the Cepheid = stars. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies = were noted. 1.8 Completed FGS 6047 (Calibrating the Mass Luminosity Relation at = the End of the Main Sequence) The FGSs were used to make astrometric observations of star = GJ1245+496 as part of a study to determine its mass luminosity = relationship. The purpose is to measure the precise parallax and = relative orbit of its faint companion. The observations were completed = as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.9 Completed WF/PC-2 6253 (Pure Parallel Archive Program) The WF/PC-2 was used to execute a pure parallel program taking = ultraviolet observations running concurrently with prime science = observations. The intent is to search for extra-galactic sources with = flux excesses at 3000 A0 and galactic sources with excesses at 1600 A0. = The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were = reported. 1.10 Completed FOS/RD 6577 (An Expanded Survey for Study of the = Lyman-Alpha Line and QSO Mg II Absorption) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make = observations of the QSO Q0453-423 in order to make a survey of the = Lyman-Alpha line and the 68 Mg II absorption line system. The = observations were completed as scheduled, and no problems were reported. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 7 Successful : 7 Scheduled Reacquisitions : 9 Successful : 9 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled : 14 Successful : 14 2.3 Operations Notes: Over the last three days, HST operations personnel have noticed = poly errors during many science tape recorder dumps. Of the seven = science tape recorder dumps performed today, only the one at 143/0020Z = had poly errors, but that one contained 18. HST operations was scheduled to transfer to the SAMS backup = facility during the night so that maintenance work could be performed in = the MOR area. However, that move has been delayed until a TTAC problem = at SAMS can be corrected. 3.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS: Nothing at this time. /DMH
