HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1647 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 06/03/96 - 0000Z (UTC) 06/04/96 Daily Status Report as of 156/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6363 (The Environments and Host = Galaxies of BL-Lac Objects) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot survey observations of = BL-Lac objects MS2336.5+0 and S5-0719+71 in order to study their = environment and their host galaxies. The goal is to investigate systemati= c trends in host galaxy type, unusual morphological features, nearby = companion galaxies, etc. The observations were executed as scheduled, = and no anomalies were noted. 1.2 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6188 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5 Calibration: = Dark) The WF/PC-2 was used to make internal dark calibration images. = The observations were completed as scheduled, and no problems were = reported. 1.3 Completed WF/PC-2 6785 (Ionized Gas Disks in Nearby Early Type = Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the nearby early type = galaxy NGC-5084 in order to study its ionized gas disk surrounding its = nucleus. Finding such disks could lead to the possibility of detecting = the gravitational effects of the supermassive black holes they orbit. = The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.4 Completed WF/PC-2 6187 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5 Calibration: Earth Flat) The WF/PC-2 was used to make Earth streak flat calibration images. = These streak flats will be used to produce flat fields, to map the OTA = illumination pattern and, in combination with other data, to produce new = superflats. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems = were reported. 1.5 Completed FGS 6262 (High Speed Astrometry - Barnard's Star) The Fine Guidance Sensors were used to make high speed astrometric = observations of Barnard's Star and seven reference stars. The = observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 6253 (Pure Parallel Archive Program) The WF/PC-2 was used to execute a pure parallel program taking = ultraviolet observations running concurrently with prime science = observations. The intent is to search for extra-galactic sources with = flux excesses at 3000 A0 and galactic sources with excesses at 1600 A0. = The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were = reported. 1.7 Completed FOS/RD 6577 (An Expanded Survey for Study of the = Lyman-Alpha Line and QSO Mg II Absorption) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make = observations of the QSO PKS1821+10 in order to make a survey of the = Lyman-Alpha line and the 68 Mg II absorption line system. The = observations were completed as scheduled, and no problems were reported. 1.8 Completed GHRS/2 5854 (Cepheid Masses) The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side Two) was used to make = observations of the blue, main sequence companion of Cepheid star = HD183344 to determine the mass of the system. The orbital radial = velocity will be measured to provide the mass ratio of the stars. A = wavelength calibration image was also taken. The observations were = executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.9 Completed WF/PC-2 5917 (The Globular Clusters in the Fornax Dwarf = - Physical Parameters) The WF/PC-2 was used to search for globular clusters in dwarf = galaxy Fornax-023 which is a member of the Fornax Galactic Cluster. The = cluster ages, metal abundances, and radial profiles will be determined = from the data. Because the galaxies in the Fornax Cluster have different = morphologies than those of the local group, the globular cluster systems = are also expected to show differences. The observations were executed as = scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 3 Successful : 3 Scheduled Reacquisitions : 12 Successful : 12 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled : 5 Successful : 5 2.3 Operations Notes: HST operations personnel experienced a quiet operational day. 3.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS: Nothing at this time. /DMH
