HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1654 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 06/12/96 - 0000Z (UTC) 06/13/96 Daily Status Report as of 165/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed WF/PC-2 6364 (Snapshot Survey of Proto-Planetary Nebulae = and AGB Stars) The WF/PC-2 was used to make some snapshot survey observations of = protoplanetary nebular system IRAS22272 to study its circumstellar = envelope. The purpose is to discern the evolutionary sequence that = produces axially-symmetric planetary nebulae. The observations were = executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.2 Completed WF/PC-2 6346 (Snapshot Survey of the Ultraluminous IRAS = Galaxy Sample-Part 1 High) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot survey observations of the = ultraluminous IRAS galaxy A7-001. These data will be searched for = multiple cores, which imply a merger has occurred, and for starburst = regions. The guide star acquisition for this proposal failed when the = step scan limit was exceeded. This was reported in HSTAR 5629. No = further anomalies were noted. 1.2 Completed FOS/BL 5851 (Post Asymptotic Giant Branch Evolution in = the Magellanic Clouds) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Blue Side) was used to make = ultraviolet observations of the planetary nebula SMC-SMP05 which is = located in the Small Magellanic Cloud. Extensive ground-based and HST = observations and imaging work has already been done on this object. The = observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.3 Completed WF/PC-2 6253 (Pure Parallel Archive Program) The WF/PC-2 was used to execute a pure parallel program taking = ultraviolet observations running concurrently with prime science = observations. The intent is to search for extra-galactic sources with = flux excesses at 3000 A0 and galactic sources with excesses at 1600 A0. = The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were = reported. 1.4 Completed FGS 6049 (Monitoring the Size and Shape of Mira Type = Stars) The FGSs were used to make astrometric observations of the Mira = class star HD120285 in order to study its size and shape during different = phases of its pulsation cycle. The observations were completed as = planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.5 Completed WF/PC-2 6431 (Determination of the Extragalactric = Distance Scale) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the galaxy NGC-4535 = to be used in measuring the periods of Cepheid variable stars within this = galaxy. This will allow for a more accurate estimate of the distances to = these galaxies through the period-luminosity relation for the Cepheid = stars. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies = were noted. 1.6 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6187 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5 Calibration: = Earth Flat) The WF/PC-2 was used to make Earth streak flat calibration images. = These streak flats will be used to produce flat fields, to map the OTA = illumination pattern and, in combination with other data, to produce new = superflats. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems = were reported. 1.7 Completed FOS/RD 6577 (An Expanded Survey for Study of the = Lyman-Alpha Line and QSO Mg II Absorption) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make = observations of the QSO Q1246-057 in order to make a survey of the = Lyman-Alpha line and the 68 Mg II absorption line system. The = observations were completed as scheduled, and no problems were reported. 1.8 Completed FOS/BL/GHRS/1 5947 (The Relationship Between Galaxies = and Lyman-Alpha Absorbers at Low Redshift) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Blue Side) and the High Resolution = Spectrograph (Side One) were used to make observations of Quasar = PG-1216+06 to study the relationship between its galaxy and Lyman-Alpha = absorbers at low redshift. The relationship between the galaxy and = low-column density, metal-poor quasar absorbers is poorly understood. = The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.9 Completed FGS 6047 (Calibrating the Mass Luminosity Relation at = the End of the Main Sequence) The FGSs were used to make astrometric observations of star GL748 = as part of a study to determine its mass luminosity relationship. The = purpose is to measure the precise parallax and relative orbit of its = faint companion. The observations were completed as planned, and no = problems were reported. 1.10 Completed WF/PC-2 6348 (Blue Continuum Snapshots of 3CR Radio = Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make some snapshot images of the blue = continuum in radio galaxies 3C236.0 and 3C184.0. Combined with existing = data, these exposures will provide high spatial resolution information on = the color distribution within galaxies, redding due to dust, spacial = indices of the optical synchrotron jets, and colors of the active nuclei = and tidal jets. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no = anomalies were noted. 1.11 Completed GHRS/2 5892 (Physical Conditions in the Galactic Halos = of the Milky Way and NGC-306) The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side Two) was used to make = observations of the radio galaxy/quasar 3C232 in order to study the metal = absorption line system produced in the line of sight by the gas in the = Milky Way and galaxy NGC-3076 halos. The observations were executed as = scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 5 Successful : 5 Scheduled Reacquisitions : 11 Successful : 11 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled : 9 Successful : 9 2.3 Operations Notes: There were no problems reported for this operational day. 3.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS: Nothing at this time. /DMH
