HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1656 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 06/14/96 - 0000Z (UTC) 06/17/96 Daily Status Report as of 169/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed WF/PC-2 6187 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5 Calibration: Earth Flat) The WF/PC-2 was used to make Earth streak flat calibration images. = These streak flats will be used to produce flat fields, to map the OTA = illumination pattern and, in combination with other data, to produce new = superflats. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems = were reported. 1.2 Completed Three Sets of WF/PC-2 5971 (HST Medium Deep Survey) The WF/PC-2 was used to make long exposure, medium-deep sky survey = observations at latitudes larger than 10 degrees taken in parallel with = the prime science observations. The observations were executed as = scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.3 Completed WF/PC-2 6439 (Using A Cepheid Based Distance to Test the = Light Peculiar Motions) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of spiral galaxy = NGC-4603 which is located in the Centaurus galaxy cluster. If this = galaxy is a cluster member, as it appears from secondary distance = indicators, its peculiar velocity is inconsistent with that predicted = from the density field as reconstructed from the observed spatial = distribution of galaxies in the cluster. The observations were completed = as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.4 Completed Three Sets of FOC/96 6689 (Determination of the = Distances and Masses of Two Galactic Cepheids) The Faint Object Camera (f/96) was used to make observations of = galactic Cepheid star HD183344. The angular separation of its binary = components will be measured from the images. When combined with the = information from the spectrographic orbits, the data will yield the = masses and distances to the Cepheid. The observations were executed as = scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.5 Completed WF/PC-2/ GHRS/1/ FOS/BL 6567 (Wind of Massive Stars in = Nearby Galaxies) The WF/PC-2, the High Resolution Spectrograph (Side One) and the = Faint Object Spectrograph (Blue Side) were all used to make observations = of hot stars in the local-group, irregular galaxy NGC-6822. Detailed stud= ies of the hot stellar populations in galaxies outside the Milky Way = provide very important tests of the theories of stellar winds and star = formation and evolution. The observations were executed as scheduled and = no anomalies were noted. 1.6 Completed GHRS/1 6449 (Spectroscopy of Two Further UV Bright = High-Redshift Quasars) The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side One) was used to make = ultraviolet spectrographic observations of the UV bright, unreddened, = high-redshifted, newly discovered quasar HE-2347-43 to try to detect = absorption lines in its line of sight. The observations were completed = as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.7 Completed Four Sets of WF/PC-2 6253 (Pure Parallel Archive = Program) The WF/PC-2 was used to execute a pure parallel program taking = ultraviolet observations running concurrently with prime science = observations. The intent is to search for extra-galactic sources with = flux excesses at 3000 A0 and galactic sources with excesses at 1600 A0. = The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were = reported. 1.8 Completed WF/PC-2 6348 (Blue Continuum Snapshots of 3CR Radio = Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make some snapshot images of the blue = continuum in radio galaxy 3C61.1. Combined with existing data, these = exposures will provide high spatial resolution information on the color = distribution within galaxies, redding due to dust, spacial indices of the = optical synchrotron jets, and colors of the active nuclei and tidal jets. = The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were = noted. 1.9 Completed WF/PC-2 6250 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5 Calibration: Internal = Monitor) The WF/PC-2 was used to make a series of internal calibration = observations. Internal flats, biases, and K-Spot calibration images were = taken. These observations are designed to monitor the health of the = cameras. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies = were noted. 1.10 Completed WF/PC-2 6431 (Determination of the Extragalactric = Distance Scale) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the galaxy NGC-4535 = to be used in measuring the periods of Cepheid variable stars within this = galaxy. This will allow for a more accurate estimate of the distances to = these galaxies through the period-luminosity relation for the Cepheid = stars. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies = were noted. 1.11 Completed FOS/RD 6577 (An Expanded Survey for Study of the = Lyman-Alpha Line and QSO Mg II Absorption) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make = observations of the QSO TOL1035.8 in order to make a survey of the = Lyman-Alpha line and the 68 Mg II absorption line system. As reported in = 2.1, the acquisition for this proposal defaulted to guidance on one FGS. = Otherwise, the observations completed as scheduled, and no further = problems were reported. 1.12 Completed FOS/BL/GHRS/1 5947 (The Relationship Between Galaxies = and Lyman-Alpha Absorbers at Low Redshift) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Blue Side) and the High Resolution = Spectrograph (Side One) were used to make observations of Quasar = Q-1245-033 to study the relationship between its galaxy and Lyman-Alpha = Absorbers at low redshift. The relationship between the galaxy and low = column density, metal poor quasar absorbers is poorly understood. The = observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.13 Completed FGS 6271 (L726-8/UV Ceti) The FGSs were used to make astrometric observations of the binary = star UV-Ceti to search for a short period low-mass companion around = either component of this binary object. The observations were executed = as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.14 Completed GHRS/2 6420 (Phase Resolved Spectroscopy of the Peculiar= Binary V-Sge) The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side Two) was used to make = phase-resolved ultraviolet spectroscopic observations of the peculiar = binary V-Sge, covering its orbital period. The target is an interacting = binary that may be related to the cataclysmic variables or the low mass = x-ray binaries. The observations were completed as planned, and no = problems were reported. 1.15 Completed WF/PC-2 6614 (The Star Formation History of the = Sagittarius Dwarf Spheroid Galaxy) The WF/PC-2 was used to make photometric observations of stars = within the newly-discovered dwarf spheroid galaxy Sgr-DSPH2 located in = Sagittarius. This is the nearest galaxy to the Milky Way. Stellar = luminosities, colors, and metallicities will be measured. The = observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.16 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6773 (The Bucher-Oemler Effect in = Nearby Clusters of Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of several starburst and = post-starburst regions the nearby galaxies and the coma of DC2048-D21 = and DC2048-D14. These data will be studied to determine what triggers = major episodes of star formation and what physically undermines the = observed Butcher-Oemler effect in more distant galaxies. The = observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.17 Completed WF/PC-2 6286 (Nuclei of Nearly Normal Galaxies (WC12): = Cycle 5) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of nuclei of the nearly = normal galaxy NGC-1052 to measure the space density profile of luminous = material and the nuclear color gradients in this object. The images will = be searched for bright stars, inner globular clusters, and absorbing = interstellar dust. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no = anomalies were noted. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 17 Successful : 17 The acquisition at 167/095424Z, defaulted to fine lock backup on = FGS #1 only.
