HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1660 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 06/20/96 - 0000Z (UTC) 06/21/96 Daily Status Report as of 173/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed Three Sets of FOS/RD 6236 (FOS Cycle 5: Location of = Spectra and Wavelength Calibration: Red Side Detector) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make = calibration observations in order to determine the location of the = spectra and to perform a wavelength calibration. All observations were = internal. A Taled calibration was also completed. The observations were = completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.2 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6253 (Pure Parallel Archive Program) The WF/PC-2 was used to execute a pure parallel program taking = ultraviolet observations running concurrently with prime science = observations. The intent is to search for extra-galactic sources with = flux excesses at 3000 A0 and galactic sources with excesses at 1600 A0. = During the second set of observations there was a guide star acquisition = failure at 172/1736Z which defaulted to a single star guiding on FGS #1. = One WF/PC-2 observation was impacted. There were no losses of lock. The = observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. During the second set of observations there was a guide star acquisition = failure at 172/1736Z which defaulted to a single guides star guiding on = FGS #1. One WF/PC-2 observation was impacted. There were no losses of = lock. 1.3 Completed FGS 6049 (Monitoring the Size and Shape of Mira Type = Stars) The FGSs were used to make astrometric observations of the Mira = class star HD84748 in order to study its size and shape during different = phases of its pulsation cycle. The observations were completed as = planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.4 Completed FOS/BL 6750 (Spectropolarimetry of Ultraviolet Continuum = and Line Emissions in Binary Systems) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Blue side) was used to make = ultraviolet continuum and emission line spectropolaragraphic observations = of the eclipsing binary star system V356-Sgr. The observations were taken = during the primary eclipse. The observations were executed as scheduled = and no anomalies were noted. 1.5 Completed WF/PC-2 5957 (Snapshot of 3CR Radio Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations for radio galaxy 3C323.1 = to study the morphology of the radio galaxy. The observations were = executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 6235 (High Resolution Imaging of Radio Galaxies = at Redshift Z~1.0) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of faint radio galaxy = 3C277.2 which is known to have a redshift of about one. This is to = attempt to determine the cause of the alignment of the blue-excess along = the radio axis. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no = anomalies were noted. 1.7 Completed FOS/RD/BL 6017 (Soft X-Ray Transients, Outburst in Black = Hole Accretion Disks) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Both the Blue and Red Sides) were = used to make target of opportunity observations of the cataclysmic = contact-binary star J1655-40 which is known to show soft X-ray = transients. These outburst are believed to be caused by the accretion = disk surrounding a black hole. The observations were completed as = scheduled, and no problems were reported. 1.8 Completed WF/PC-2 5971 (HST Medium Deep Survey) The WF/PC-2 was used to make a long exposure medium deep sky = survey observations at latitudes larger than 10 degrees taken in parallel = with the prime science observations. The observations were executed as = scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.9 Completed FGS 6036 (Detection and Mass Determination of Low Mass = Companions to nearby M Dwarf) The FGSs were used in both the POS and TRANS Modes to make = astrometric observations of low mass companions to M class dwarf star = GL791 and four reference stars. This will lead to a mass determination = for the stars. There was a guide star acquisition failure at 172/1736Z = which defaulted to a single star guiding on FGS #1. One FGS astrometric = observation was impacted. There were no losses of lock. The observations = were completed as planned, and no anomalies were noted. 1.10 Completed WF/PC-2/ GHRS/1/ FOS/BL 6567 (Wind of Massive Stars in = Nearby Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 , the High Resolution Spectrograph (Side One) and the = Faint Object Spectrograph (Blues Side) were all used to make observations = of hot stars in the local-group, irregular galaxy NGC-6822. Detailed = studies of the hot stellar populations in galaxies outside the Milky Way = provide very important tests of the theories of stellar winds and star = formation and evolution. The observations were executed as scheduled and = no anomalies were noted. 1.11 Completed WF/PC-2 5913 (Low-Mass Binaries and Luminosity Fuction) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the low-mass binary = system MT0005 (Late Type Class M dwarf stars). The intent is to determine = why the local stellar luminosity function is flat below Mv=3D12, while = that found from more distant stars falls by an order of magnitude by = Mv=3D14. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies = were noted. 1.12 Completed WF/PC-2 6439 (Using Cepheid Based Distance to Test = Large Peculiar Motions) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the spiral galaxy = NGC-4603 which is located in the Centaurus galaxy cluster to look for = Cepheid variable stars to be used to measure the distance to the object, = which in turn will be used to study its large peculiar motions. If this = galaxy is a cluster member, as appears from secondary distance = indicators, then its peculiar velocity is inconsistent with that = predicted from the density field as reconstructed from the observational = distribution of galaxies in the cluster. The observations were executed = as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 8 Successful : 8 Scheduled Reacquisitions : 7 Successful : 7 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled : 16 Successful : 16 2.3 Operations Notes: There was a guide star acquisition failure at 172/1736Z which = defaulted to a single star guiding on FGS #1.
