HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1663 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 06/25/96 - 0000Z (UTC) 06/26/96 Daily Status Report as of 178/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed WF/PC-2 6431 (Determination of the Extragalactric = Distance Scale) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the galaxy NGC-4535 = to be used in measuring the periods of Cepheid variable stars within this = galaxy. This will allow for a more accurate estimate of the distances to = these galaxies through the period-luminosity relation for the Cepheid = stars. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies = were noted. 1.2 Completed WF/PC-2 6187 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5 Calibration: Earth Flat) The WF/PC-2 was used to make Earth streak flat calibration images. = These streak flats will be used to produce flat fields, to map the OTA = illumination pattern and, in combination with other data, to produce new = superflats. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems = were reported. 1.3 Completed WF/PC-2 6557 (WF/PC-2 Imaging of Intermediate Redshift = Absorption Selected Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the galaxy Q1019-FIEL = where a halo appears to be absorbing light from the background = quasi-stellar object (QSO). The observations were completed as planned, = and no problems were reported. 1.4 Completed FOS/RD 6577 (An Expanded Survey for Study of the = Lyman-Alpha Line and QSO Mg II Absorption) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make = observations of the QSO MC1511+103 in order to make a survey of the = Lyman-Alpha line and the 68 Mg II absorption line system. The = observations were completed as scheduled, and no problems were reported. 1.5 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6188 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5 Calibration: = Dark) The WF/PC-2 was used to make internal dark calibration images. = The observations were completed as scheduled, and no problems were = reported. 1.6 Completed WF/PC-2/ GHRS/1/ FOS/BL 6567 (Wind of Massive Stars in = Nearby Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 , the High Resolution Spectrograph (Side One) and the = Faint Object Spectrograph (Blue Side) were all used to make observations = of hot stars in the local-group, irregular galaxy NGC-6822. Detailed = studies of the hot stellar populations in galaxies outside the Milky Way = provide very important tests of the theories of stellar winds and star = formation and evolution. The observations were executed as scheduled and = no anomalies were noted. 1.7 Completed WF/PC-2 6614 (The Star Formation History of the = Sagittarius Dwarf Spheroid Galaxy) The WF/PC-2 was used to make photometric observations of stars = within the newly-discovered dwarf spheroid galaxy SGR-DSPH3 located in = Sagittarius. This is the nearest galaxy to the Milky Way. Stellar = luminosities, colors, and metallicities will be measured. The = observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.8 Completed WF/PC-2 6250 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5 Calibration: Internal = Monitor) The WF/PC-2 was used to make a series on internal calibration = observations. Internal flats, biases, and K-Spot calibration images were = taken. These observations are designed to monitor the health of the = cameras. T he observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies = were noted. 1.9 Completed GHRS/2 6687 (How Did Stars Evolve in the Early Universe? = The Role of Metallicity) The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side Two) was used to obtain = spectra of the central star of the planetary nebula PK315-13. These = spectra will be used to test and refine a new evolutionary scheme for low = and intermediate mass stars. The observations were executed as = scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 4 Successful : 4 Scheduled Reacquisitions : 10 Successful : 10 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled : 11 Successful : 11 2.3 Operations Notes: HST operations did not make a planned move to the SAMS backup = facility due to NASCOM line problems. When these problems are corrected, = the move will be made and LAN testing in the MOR area can begin. 3.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS: Nothing at this time. /DMH
