HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1668 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 07/02/96 - 0000Z (UTC) 07/03/96 Daily Status Report as of 185/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed WF/PC-2 6346 (Snapshot Survey of the Ultraluminous IRAS = Galaxy Sample-Part 1 High) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot survey observations of the = ultraluminous IRAS galaxy QDOTULIR03. These data will be searched for = multiple cores, which imply a merger has occurred, and for starburst = regions. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies = were noted. 1.2 Completed WF/PC-2 6752 (Global Mapping of the Opposition Surge on = the Galilean Satellites) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the planet Jupiter's = moons Callisto, Europa, Io and Ganymede while Jupiter is in opposition. = The brightness at opposition (The Opposition Effect) is common to Solar = System bodies without atmospheres. Differences in surface roughness and = structure affect the amount and phase-angle shape dependence in the = brightening. The proposal was executed as scheduled and no anomalies = were noted. 1.3 Completed WF/PC-2 6347 (A Search for Jets in Planetary Nebulae) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the planetary nebulae = (class PNe) NGC6210 in order to search for the presence of possible = narrow jets. The current model for PNe formation indicates that jets are = an unexpected phenomena. Yet there is a growing body of circumstantial = evidence that suggests narrow jets are common feature in PNe. The = observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.4 Completed FOC/96 6349 (Snapshot search for High Redshift QSOs with = Far-UV Flux) The Faint Object Camera (f/96) was used to make snapshot images of = the quasi-stellar object Q1607+183. This is to determine if this high = redshifted object has a far ultraviolet flux. The observations were = executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.5 Completed FOS/BL 6297 (Probing The Black Hole Environment: The = Nuclear Spectrum of M-87) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Blue Side) was used to make = spectrographic observations of the central nuclear region of galaxy = NGC-4486 (aka, M-87) to probe its black hole environment. The = observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 6253 (Pure Parallel Archive Program) The WF/PC-2 was used to execute a pure parallel program taking = ultraviolet observations running concurrently with prime science = observations. The intent is to search for extra-galactic sources with = flux excesses at 3000 A0 and galactic sources with excesses at 1600 A0. = The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were = reported. 1.7 Completed FOC/48 6308 (Long Slit Spectroscopy of the Narrow Line = Region of Seyfert Galaxies) The Faint Object Camera (f/48) was used to make long slit = spectrographic observations of the narrow line region of Seyfert galaxy = NGC-4151. The slit was placed at several different positions across the = nuclear region of the target. An internal flat and a dark calibration = images were also taken. The proposal was executed as scheduled, and no = anomalies were reported. 1.8 Completed Two Sets of WF/P-2 6254 (GTO Pure Parallel Program - = Cycle 5) The WF/PC-2 was use to make random long exposures of high galactic = fields taken in parallel with the prime science observations to obtain a = random sample of galaxies. The observations were executed as scheduled, = and no anomalies were noted. 1.9 Completed FOS/RD 6167 (FOS Cycle 5: Dark Monitoring) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make several = dark calibration images. All exposures were internals. All spectra was = done in the image mode. The observations were completed as planned, and = no problems were reported. 1.10 Completed FOS/RD 6007 (Comparison of Large Scale Structures in = QSO Absorbers and Galaxies) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make observati= ons of Lyman-Alpha absorber QSO CSO179 to do a comparison study of its = large scale structure. This target was selected as a deep, redshifted = galaxy from a survey which already exists. The observations were = executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.11 Completed WF/PC-2 5971 (HST Medium Deep Survey) The WF/PC-2 was used to make a long exposure medium deep sky = survey observations at latitudes larger than 10 degrees taken in parallel = with the prime science observations. The observations were executed as = scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 5 Successful : 5 Scheduled Reacquisitions : 10 Successful : 10 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled : 7 Successful : 7 As documented in HSTAR 5645, there was an FHST map failure because = there were no stars in FHST #1. 2.3 Operations Notes: A TTR was written that described a MA return link drop-out that = was caused by a WSGTU hardware problem. Realtime operations returned to the MOR at 184/2115Z following the = conclusion of GSFC Internal Simulation #7 (Deploy). 3.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS: Nothing at this time. /DMH
