HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1698 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 08/15/96 - 0000Z (UTC) 08/16/96 Daily Status Report as of 229/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed WF/PC-2 6909 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 6 Calibration: Earth Flats) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the bright earth to = obtain streak flats which are used to construct high quality flat fields = for the WF/PC-2 filter set. The observations were executed as scheduled, = and no anomalies were noted. 1.2 Completed GHRS/2 6593 (Origin and Physical Conditions in the Local = Lyman-Alpha Forest) The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side Two) was used to make high = resolution spectral observations of active galactic nuclei of ESO141-G55 = in order to study the origin and physical conditions of the local = Lyman-Alpha forest cloud which lies in the foreground of the quasar. The = study of these data should provide a better understanding of the origin = and physical conditions in this cloud and its relationship, if any, to = near by galaxies. The observations were completed as planned and no = anomalies were reported. 1.3 Completed FOS/RD 6589 (Associated Absorption Lines in QSOs) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make = spectrographic observations of the QSO 3C298 in order to study its = associated absorption lines. The absorption lines (ZA) and the emission = lines (ZE) give similar redshifts, that is ZA~ZE. Recent studies have = suggested that the metallicity in its environment is higher than the = solar value. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies = were noted. 1.4 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6188 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5 Calibration: = Dark) The WF/PC-2 was used to make internal dark calibration images. The = observations were completed as scheduled, and no problems were reported. 1.5 Completed WF/PC-2 6348 (Blue Continuum Snapshots of 3CR Radio = Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make some snapshot images of the blue conti= nuum in radio galaxy 3C280.0. Combined with existing data, these = exposures will provide high spatial resolution information on the color = distribution within galaxies, redding due to dust, spacial indices of the = optical synchrotron jets, and colors of the active nuclei and tidal jets. = The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.6 Completed FOS/BL 6202 (Cycle 5 FOS Spectral Flat field = Calibration) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Blue Side) was used to make observat= ions of the white relatively featureless white dwarf star WD0501+527 in = order to make flat field calibration images. the observations were made = through the 1.0 aperture, with all usable detector/disperser = combinations. The observations were executed as schedule, and no = anomalies were noted. 1.7 Completed FOS/RD 6048 (Separate Spectra of Stars of Known Very Low = Mass in Nearby Closed Binary Systems) The Faint Object Spectrograph ( Red Side) was used to make = separate spectrographic observations of both stars in the nearby very low = mass binary star system L722-22A-B. This system has an orbital period of = only a few days. The observations were completed as planned, and no = problems were noted. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 5 Successful : 5 Scheduled Reacquisitions : 10 Successful : 10 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled : 11 Successful : 11 2.3 Operations Notes: Operations were nominal, and no anomalies were noted. 3.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS: Nothing at this time. /DMH
