HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1699 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 08/16/96 - 0000Z (UTC) 08/19/96 Daily Status Report as of 232/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed Three Sets of WF/PC-2 6909 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 6 Calibration: = Earth Flats) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the bright earth to = obtain streak flats which are used to construct high quality flat fields = for the WF/PC-2 filter set. The observations were executed as scheduled, = and no anomalies were noted. 1.2 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6346 (Snapshot Survey of the = Ultraluminous IRAS Galaxy Sample-Part 1 High) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot survey observations of the = ultraluminous IRAS galaxies CL-ULIR231 and CL-ULIR225. These data will = be searched for multiple cores, which imply a merger has occurred, and = for starburst regions. The observations were executed as scheduled, and = no anomalies were noted. 1.3 Completed FOS/BL 6727 (A Unique Test of Astroseismology: The DBV = GD358) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Blue Side) was used to make rapid = mode, ultraviolet, spectrographic observations of the white dwarf star = V777 Her (aka, DVB GD358) to determine the pulsation indices of the = non-radial g-mode light variations. This is part of a unique test of = astroseismology. Knowledge of the indices provides constraints on the = structure and evolution of the star and, possibly, on its mass and = distance. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies = were noted. 1.4 Completed Four Sets of WF/PC-2 6188 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5 Calibration: = Dark) The WF/PC-2 was used to make internal dark calibration images. = The observations were completed as scheduled, and no problems were = reported. 1.5 Completed WF/PC-2 6361 (High Resolution Imaging of X-Ray Selected = AGNs) The WF/PC-2 was used to make high resolution observations of the = known low red shifted x-ray active galactic nuclei (AGN) MS1322.3+2. = These data will allow a study of the optical properties of an unbiased = sample of AGN host galaxies. The observations were completed as = scheduled, and no problems were reported. 1.6 Completed FOS/RD 6801 (C and N Production and Pollution Mechanism = in Low-Metallicity) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make = spectrographic observations of the dwarf galaxy T1345-420 to measure its = N, O and C emission lines in its H II regions. The observations were = completed as planned and no anomalies were reported. 1.7 Completed WF/PC-2 6905 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 6 Calibration: Internal = Monitor) The WF/PC-2 was used to make several internal calibrations = observations including biases and internal flats as part of a Cycle 6 = calibrations procedure. A variety of internal exposures are run weekly = to verify and monitor the health of the camera. The observations were = executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.8 Completed Two Sets of GHRS/2 6213 (GHRS Aperture Offsets- Cycle 5) The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side Two) was used to make = calibration images of the star HD141556 in order to determine the offsets = of the instrument's focal plane apertures. The purpose of this = calibration program is to measure the relative wavelength of offsets = between the large science aperture and the small science aperture with = various gratings. A wavelength calibration image was also taken. The = observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.9 Completed WF/PC-2 6347 (A Search for Jets in Planetary Nebulae) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the planetary nebulae = (class PNe) PK003+02D1 in order to search for the presence of possible = narrow jets. The current model for PNe formation indicates that jets are = an unexpected phenomena. Yet there is a growing body of circumstantial = evidence that suggests narrow jets are common feature in PNe. The = observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.10 Competed Two Sets of FOS/RD 6552 (Spectrophotometry of Inner = Jovian Satellites) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make = spectrographic observations of Jupiter's inner moons, Metis and Amalthea, = during their eastern elongation. Many things can be determined from the = analysis of these spectra. During the first iteration of this proposal, = the FOS binary target acquisition failed when no target object was = located in the aperture. A status buffer message to this effect was = generated. HSTAR 5693 was written to describe this event. Otherwise, = the observations were executed as planned, and no further problems were = reported. 1.11 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6359 (Core Properties of the Bulges = of Spiral Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot survey observations of = spiral galaxy NGC-7013 in order to study its central bulge. The aim is = to investigate the core properties, correlations with global galactic = properties, and the frequency of occurrence of multiple and/or = miscentered nuclei. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no = anomalies were noted. 1.12 Completed WF/PC-2 5848 (The Nuclear Disk in the E4 Galaxy = NGC-7052) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the E4 class radio = galaxy NGC-7052 to study its nuclear disk and the kinematics of the gas = near the nucleus. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no = anomalies were noted.) 1.13 Completed GHRS/2 6076 (XI BOO A: Structure and Non-Thermal = Heating) The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side Two) was used to make high = resolution spectrographic observations of the binary system star HD131156 = (aka, XI Boo A and B) in order to study its structure and non-thermal = heating. From these data an improved value for the electron density will = be obtained. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems = were reported. 1.14 Completed FGS 6566 (Calibrating the Mass-Luminosity Relation at = the End of the Main Sequence) The FGSs were used to make astrometric observations of the = components of the low-mass, binary system, star G250-29 in order to make = a calibrations of the mass-luminosity relation at the end of the main = sequence. The individual stars have masses of less than 0.2 solar = masses. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no problems = were noted. 1.15 Completed FOS RD 6487 (Spectroscopy of the Inner Satellites of = Uranus) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make prism = spectrographic observations to Uranus' inner moons, Miranda, Puck, Portia = and Juliet. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems = were reported. 1.16 Completed GHRS/1/2 6594 (White Dwarf Companions of Barium and CH = Peculiar Stars) The High Resolution Spectrograph (Sides One and Two) was used to = attempt to make spectrographic observations of the white dwarf of the = Barium and CH Peculiar class star HD165634-B. This will test the theory = that abundance anomalies in this star caused by mass transfer from the = precursor of the white dwarf. The observations were executed as = scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.17 Completed WF/PC-2 6119 (Snapshot Survey for Companions of = Planetary Nebula Nuclei) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot survey observations of = planetary nebula MZ2 to study its nucleus and to look for possible = companions. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no = anomalies were noted. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 18 Successful : 18 Scheduled Reacquisitions : 29 Successful : 29 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled : 35 Successful : 35 2.3 Operations Notes: No opertional problems were encountered over the weekend. 3.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS: Nothing at this time. /DMH
