HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1703 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 08/22/96 - 0000Z (UTC) 08/23/96 Daily Status Report as of 236/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6903 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 6 Calibration: = Decontamination) The WF/PC-2 was used to make several calibration bias = observations, internal flats, K-Spot images and dark calibration images = which are all part of a Cycle 6 decontamination procedure. No science = was interleaved with the dark exposures. The observations were = completed as scheduled, and no problems were reported. 1.2 Completed GHRS/1/2 6076 (XI BOO A: Structure and Non-Thermal = Heating) The High Resolution Spectrograph (Sides One and Two) was used to = make high resolution spectrographic observations of the binary system = star HD131156 (aka, XI Boo A and B) in order to study its structure and = non-thermal heating. From these data an improved value for the electron = density will be obtained. At 235/014642Z, a status buffer message was = received that indicated that the number of target correction slews was = exceeded while attempting to locate the target. Any effect on science is = unknown at this time. HSTAR was written to document this event. = Otherwise, the observations were completed as planned, and no further = problems were reported. 1.3 Completed WF/PC-2 6346 (Snapshot Survey of the Ultraluminous IRAS = Galaxy Sample-Part 1 High) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot survey observations of the = ultraluminous IRAS galaxy IR06206-63. These data will be searched for = multiple cores, which imply a merger has occurred, and for starburst = regions. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies = were noted. 1.4 Completed S/C 4974 (DF-224 FS Installation 9.0 and Higher) The installation of DF-224 Flight Software 9.7 was completed at = 335/1222Z, and no anomalies were noted. 1.5 Completed GHRS/1 6090 (UV Spectroscopy of Two Ultra-Hot White = Dwarf Candidates) The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side One) was used to make = far-ultraviolet spectrographic observations of the star HS0713+395 which = is a ultra-hot white dwarf candidate. The spectra will be used to = confirm the star's temperature. The observations were completed as = planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.6 Completed FOC/96 6349 (Snapshot search for High Redshift QSOs with = Far-UV Flux) The Faint Object Camera (f/96) was used to make snapshot images of = the quasi-stellar object Q1527+478. This is to determine if this high = redshifted object has a far ultraviolet flux. The observations were = executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.7 Completed FOS/BL 6498 (Accretion Streams in Magnetic Variables: = FOS Eclipse of 4 Rosa) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Blue Side) was used to make rapid = mode spectrographic observations of the accretion streams in the magnetic = variable star (i.e., cataclysmic variable) RXJ0515+01 (aka, 4 Rosa). = This is a binary system, and it contains a white dwarf star, an accretion = disk, a mass stream, and hot spot where the mass stream hits the disk and = a companion star. The observations were completed as planned and no = anomalies were reported. 1.8 Completed FOS/RD 6912 (FOS Cycle 6: Dark Monitoring) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make = measurements of the internal background. All exposures were internals, = and the spectrographic observations were made in the image mode. The = observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.9 Completed WF/PC-2/GHRS/1/FOS/BL 6567 (Wind of Massive Stars in = Nearby Galaxies) The WF/PC-2, the High Resolution Spectrograph (Side One) and the = Faint Object Spectrograph (Blue Side) were used to make observations of = hot stars in the local-group, irregular galaxy NGC-6822. Detailed = studies of the hot stellar populations in galaxies outside the Milky Way = provide very important tests of the theories of stellar winds and star = formation and evolution. The observations were executed as scheduled and = no anomalies were noted. 1.10 Completed WF/PC-2 6909 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 6 Calibration: Earth Flats) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the bright earth to = obtain streak flats which are used to construct high quality flat fields = for the WF/PC-2 filter set. The observations were executed as scheduled, = and no anomalies were noted. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 9 Successful : 9 Scheduled Reacquisitions : 8 Successful : 8 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled : 13 Successful : 13 2.3 Operations Notes: As noted in 1.4, there were no problems with the DF-224 Flight = Software installation. 3.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS: Nothing at this time. /DMH
