HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1706 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 08/27/96 - 0000Z (UTC) 08/28/96 Daily Status Report as of 241/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed Two Sets of GHRS/2 6172 (CRIMP2: Cycle 5 = Condensed-Regimen Integrated Monitoring Program) The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side Two) was used to obtain = darks, internal flats (in photoscan mode), wavelength calibrations and = observations of standard star BD+28D4211. This includes detector = calibration, sensitivity monitoring, and wavelength monitoring. The = observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.2 Completed WF/PC-2 6905 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 6 Calibration: Internal = Monitor) The WF/PC-2 was used to make several internal calibration = observations including biases and internal flats as part of a Cycle 6 = calibrations procedure. A variety of internal exposures are run weekly = to verify and monitor the health of the camera. The observations were = executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.3 Completed FOS/RD 6654 (Ultraviolet Spectroscopy of Hot DB White = Dwarfs) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make = observations of the hot, helium-atmosphere, DB White Dwarf class star = WD1654+160. The ultraviolet spectra will be used to determine the = effective temperatures of this star, which shows discrepancies when = calculated from the optical spectra due to traces of photospheric = hydrogen which is not visible at optical wavelengths. The observations = were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.4 Completed WF/PC-2 6909 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 6 Calibration: Earth Flats) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the bright earth to = obtain streak flats which are used to construct high quality flat fields = for the WF/PC-2 filter set. The observations were executed as scheduled, = and no anomalies were noted. 1.5 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6253 (Pure Parallel Archive Program) The WF/PC-2 was used to execute a pure parallel program taking = ultraviolet observations running concurrently with prime science = observations. The intent is to search for extra-galactic sources with = flux excesses at 3000 A0 and galactic sources with excesses at 1600 A0. = The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were = reported. 1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 6906 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 6 Calibration: Internal = Monitor-Visual Flats) The WF/PC-2 was used to make internal calibration visual flat = images as part of the Cycle 6 internal monitoring of the instrument's = operations. This proposal defines the standard series of internal flat = fields, which will be executed twice per month. The observations were = completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.7 Completed FOC/96 6349 (Snapshot search for High Redshift QSOs with = Far-UV Flux) The Faint Object Camera (f/96) was used to make snapshot images of = the quasi-stellar object Q1422+231. This is to determine if this high = redshifted object has a far ultraviolet flux. The observations were = executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.8 Completed GHRS/2/FOS/RD 6025 (Consequences of the Shoemaker-Levy = Impact With Jupiter) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) and the High Resolution = Spectrograph (Side Two) were both used to make spectrographic = observations of Jupiter's moon Calisto in order to study the possible = consequences from the impact of the comet Shoemaker-Levy on Jupiter. = This is to study the atmosphere following the impact to measure the = chemical abundances as a function of time. The observations were = completed as scheduled, and no problems were reported. 1.9 Completed WF/PC-2 6348 (Blue Continuum Snapshots of 3CR Radio = Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make some snapshot images of the blue = continuum in radio galaxy 3C36.0. Combined with existing data, these = exposures will provide high spatial resolution information on the color = distribution within galaxies, redding due to dust, spacial indices of the = optical synchrotron jets, and colors of the active nuclei and tidal jets. = The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were = noted. 1.10 Completed WF/PC-2 6749 (A Study of the Gaseous Halo of the = Andromeda Galaxy) The WF/PC-2 was used to make absorption line spectrographic = observations of object QSO 0035+4112 which is located behind the = Andromeda Galaxy (aka, M-31) in order to study the galaxy's gaseous halo. = The QSO's light passes through the galaxy. The distribution, = ionization, and kinematics of the gas will be investigated. The = observations were completed as planned and no anomalies were reported. 1.11 Completed GHRS/1/2 6418 (Small-Scale ISM Structure: The = Remarkable Sightline Toward MU Cru.) The High Resolution Spectrograph (Sides One and Two) was used = (echelle mode) to make spectrographic observations of the binary star = Mu-Cru (aka, HD112091). These observations were made to study the small = scale structure of the inter-stellar medium which lies in the = line-of-sight to this star. These observations will provide information = on the small scale variations that appear to be present in the = interstellar medium. The observations were completed as planned, and no = problems were reported. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 11 Successful : 11 Scheduled Reacquisitions : 7 Successful : 7 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled : 13 Successful : 13 2.3 Operations Notes: There were mo significant reported operational problems. 3.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS: Nothing at this time. /DMH
