HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1714 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 09/09/96 - 0000Z (UTC) 09/10/96 Daily Status Report as of 254/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6364 (Snapshot Survey of = Proto-Planetary Nebulae and AGB Stars) The WF/PC-2 was used to make some snapshot survey observations of = protoplanetary nebular systems IRAS05341 and OH53.8+20 to study their = circumstellar envelopes. The purpose is to discern the evolutionary = sequence that produces axially-symmetric planetary nebulae. The = observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.2 Completed FGS 6049 (Monitoring the Size and Shape of Mira Type = Stars) The FGSs were used to make astrometric observations of the Mira = class star HD120285 in order to study its size and shape during different = phases of its pulsation cycle. The observations were completed as = planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.3 Completed WF/PC-2 6905 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 6 Calibration: Internal = Monitor) The WF/PC-2 was used to make several internal calibrations = observations including biases and internal flats as part of a Cycle 6 = calibrations procedure. A variety of internal exposures are run weekly = to verify and monitor the health of the camera. The observations were = executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.4 Completed GHRS/1 5882 (Ech-A Studies of Single Interstellar = Clouds) The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side One) was used to make = Echelle-A spectrographic observations of the star HD141637 (aka, Rho Leo) = in order to study the interstellar absorption line clouds which lies in = the line-of-sight to that star. The observations were completed as = planned, and no problems were reported. 1.5 Completed Three Sets of WF/PC-2 6253 (Pure Parallel Archive = Program) The WF/PC-2 was used to execute a pure parallel program taking = ultraviolet observations running concurrently with prime science = observations. The intent is to search for extra-galactic sources with = flux excesses at 3000 A0 and galactic sources with excesses at 1600 A0. = The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were = reported. 1.6 Completed FOS/BL 6498 (Accretion Streams in Magnetic Variables: = FOS Eclipse of 4 Rosa) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Blue Side) was used to make rapid = mode spectrographic observations of the accretion streams in the magnetic = variable star (i.e., cataclysmic variable) RXJ1940-10. This is a binary = system, and it contains a white dwarf star, an accretion disk, a mass = stream, and hot spot where the mass stream hits the disk and a companion = star. The FGS acquisition for this proposal defaulted to fine lock = backup on FGS #1 only. HSTAR 5705 describes the sequence of events. = Otherwise, the observations were completed as planned, and no further = anomalies were reported. 1.7 Completed FGS 6768 (Continuation of an Astrometric Search For = Planetary Companions to Proxima Cen) The FGS were used to make astrometric observations of the star = Proxima-Cen and several other reference stars. Excluding our Sun, this = is the next closest star to the planet Earth at just over 4 light years = away. These data will be combined with data from pervious cycles and = analysis will be done looking for any indications of a planetary = companion. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies = were noted. 1.8 Completed WF/PC-2 6365 (A Snapshot Survey For Companions and Clusters = around Wolf-Rayet Stars) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot observations of Wolf-Rayet = star WR21 in order to look for companion stars and clusters. Photometry = was performed on this Wolf-Rayet star and associated reference stars. = The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were = reported. 1.9 Completed GHRS/2 5857 (Is Mixing or Mass Loss the Cause of Decline = in 12C/13C) The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side Two) was used to make = spectrographic observations of the halo star HD175305 to study the ratio = of its 12C/13C Carbon and the abundance of its Boron. The results will = influence models of evolution off of the main sequence. The observations = were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.10 Completed WF/PC-2 6584 (Interaction of Supernovae With = Curcumstellar Material) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of Supernova SN1980K. = The objective is to study the interaction between the supernova and the = remnant circumstellar material from the progenitor star, and how that = interaction can sustain supernovae luminocity for long periods. The = observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 7 Successful : 7 Scheduled Reacquisitions : 6 Successful : 6 Losses of lock were experienced at 254/0654Z, 254/0825Z, and 254/09= 30Z resulting in some loss of science data. HSTARs 5706, 5707 and 5708 = were written. 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled : 12 Successful : 12 2.3 Operations Notes: There were no reported operational problems. 3.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS: Nothing at this time. /DMH
