HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1723 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 09/20/96 - 0000Z (UTC) 09/23/96 Daily Status Report as of 267/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed WF/PC-2 6537 (Black Holes in Kinamatically Decoupled = Cores: A Study of IC4559) The WF/PC-2 was used to make images of the nuclear region of = luminous, E3 Class, Elliptical galaxy IC1459 in order to study its the = possible black hole in its dynamically decoupled cores. The observations = will be used to determine the morphology of the ionized gas. The = observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.2 Completed WF/PC-2 6909 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 6 Calibration: Earth Flats) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the bright Earth to = obtain streak flats which are used to construct high quality flat fields = for the WF/PC-2 filter set. As reported in HSTAR 5717, the FGS = acquisition for this observation defaulted to fine lock backup on one FGS = only. Otherwise, the observations were executed as scheduled, and no = further anomalies were noted. 1.3 Completed FOS/BL 6498 (Accretion Streams in Magnetic Variables: = FOS Eclipse of 4 Rosa) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Blue Side) was used to make rapid = mode spectrographic observations of the accretion streams in the magnetic = variable star (i.e., cataclysmic variable) RJX0515+10. This is a binary = system, and it contains a white dwarf star, an accretion disk, a mass = stream, and hot spot where the mass stream hits the disk and a companion = star. The observations were completed as planned and no anomalies were = reported. 1.4 Completed WF/PC-2 6935 (WF/PC-2 Cycle: Photometric Transformation) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of object NGC2100 in = order to perform photometric transformations. This is a series of = observations that will be used to extend the WF/PC-2 photometric = transformation to include the Stromger and Johnson-Cousins systems. The = observations were completed as planned and no problems were reported. 1.5 Completed Two Sets of GHRS/2 6078 (The Wind Momentum-Luminosity = Relationship for SMC A and B Supergiants.) The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side Two) was used to make = spectrographic observations of the O/B class stars AV264 and AV478 which = are located in the Small Magellanic Cloud in order to measure the wind = momentum-luminosity relationship in these low metallicity stars. This = relationship is used to determine the distance to galaxies. The = observations were completed as planned and no problems were reported. 1.6 Completed FOS/RD 6508 (Specially Resolved Spectroscopy of New = Compact Multiple Systems ) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make = observations of star HD32228 and its nearby companions. This star is in = a compact cluster located in the Large Magellanic Cloud. The = observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. = 1.7 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6253 (Pure Parallel Archive Program) The WF/PC-2 was used to execute a pure parallel program taking = ultraviolet observations running concurrently with prime science = observations. The intent is to search for extra-galactic sources with = flux excesses at 3000 A0 and galactic sources with excesses at 1600 A0. = The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were = reported. 1.8 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6359 (Core Properties of the Bulges = of Spiral Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot survey observations of = spiral galaxy NGC-986 in order to study its central bulge. The aim is to = investigate the core properties, correlations with global galactic = properties, and the frequency of occurrence of multiple and/or = miscentered nuclei. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no = anomalies were noted. 1.9 Completed FOS/BL 6766 (Narrow Line Seyfert 1S and the Iron Enigma = in Active Galaxies) The FOS (Blue Side) was used to make observations of the 1S class = narrow lined Seyfert galaxy RXJ0134-42 in order to study its iron enigma. = These data should show correlations between its x-ray spectra, = kinematics, and Fe II spectra. The observations were completed as = planned and no problems were reported 1.10 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6802 (Cosmology With the Medium = Deep Survey) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations taken in parallel with = the prime science observations as part of the Medium Deep Sky Survey. = The observations were executed as scheduled, and no problems were reported= .. 1.11 Completed WF/PC-2 6341 (SN1978K: Probing the Shocked Ejecta) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the shocked eject = from the Super Nova in NGC-1313 which is located in the barred galaxy = NGC-1313-03. It is the only example of a very young remnant of known age = which is x-ray bright. Approximately four-and one-half hours into this = eight-hour proposal, the three-minute, 11-second loss of lock mentioned = in 2.1 occurred. Otherwise, the observation were completed as planned, = and no further problems were noted. 1.12 Completed GHRS/2 6712 (The Gaseous Extent of Galaxies: How Far is = Too Far?) The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side Two) was used to make = spectrographic observations of a quasar located in a field of galaxies in = which proposers have carried out extensive redshift surveys. A wave = length calibration image was also taken. The observations were completed = as planned and no problems were noted. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 19 Successful : 19 As documented in HSTAR 5719, a loss of lock occurred at = 266/063730Z.
