HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1741 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 10/17/96 - 0000Z (UTC) 10/18/96 Daily Status Report as of 292/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed WF/PC-2 6903 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 6 Calibration: = Decontamination) The WF/PC-2 was used to make several calibration bias = observations, internal flats, K-Spot images and dark calibration images = which are all part of a Cycle 6 decontamination procedure. No science = was interleaved with the dark exposures. The observations were completed = as scheduled, and no problems were reported. 1.2 Completed FOS/RD 6912 (FOS Cycle 6: Dark Monitoring) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make measureme= nts of the internal background. All exposures were internals, and the = spectrographic observations were made in the image mode. The = observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.3 Completed GHRS/1/2 6617 (The ISM Toward Nearby High Velocity = Stars) The High Resolution Spectrograph (Both Sides One and Two ) was = used to make spectrographic observations of the high velocity star = HD201091 in order to study the Inter Stellar Medium (ISM) in the = direction toward this star. This is to determine the accurate Deuterium = to Hydrogen ratio in this local interstellar gas. A wavelength = calibration image was also taken. The observations were executed as = scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.4 Completed FOS/RD 6408 (NGC-1569 as a Local Probe of Galactic = Evolution at High Redshift) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make = spectrographic observations of the irregular galaxy NGC-1569. These data = will be used to study the star formation history and chemical evolution = of this galaxy. The interstellar medium in NGC-1569 is expelled and = forms a large scale outflow due to the effects of the stellar winds and = supernovae. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no = anomalies were noted. 1.5 Completed WF/PC-2 6663 (Systematic Investigation of C/1995 01 = (Hale-Bopp)) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the comet Hale-Bopp = (aka, comet C/1995-01) as part of a systematic investigation of the = comet. The comet is being monitored over a wide range of heliocentric = distances. These data at different distances will provide unique = information the sublimation behavior of the material in this comet. The = observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.6 Completed Three Sets of FOS/RD 6914 (FOS Cycle 6: Location of = Spectra and Wavelength Calibration - Red Side) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make both a = TALED and a wavelength calibration image. All observations were made = using internal light sources. This proposal will be executed a total of = 12 time during cycle 6 (i.e., once per month). The observations were = executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.7 Completed WF/PC-2 6733 (Spatially Resolved Mapping of Titan's Atmos= phere ) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations at several different = wavelengths of the atmosphere on Saturn's largest moon Titan as part of a = spatially resolved mapping program. Methane gas and organic aerosols are = the major contributor to the atmospheres opacity. The observations were = completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.8 Completed WF/PC-2 6907 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 6 Calibration: Internal = Flats) The WF/PC-2 was used to make internal flat filter sweep = calibration images. This is a series of exposures to test the linearity = of the camera. The observations were completed as planned and no = problems were reported. 1.9 Completed WF/PC-2 6347 (A Search for Jets in Planetary Nebulae) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the planetary nebulae = (class PNe) PK051+09D1 in order to search for the presence of possible = narrow jets. The current model for PNe formation indicates that jets are = an unexpected phenomena. Yet there is a growing body of circumstantial = evidence that suggests narrow jets are common feature in PNe. The = observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.10 Completed Two Sets of FGS 6923 (Red TF Calibration) The FGSs were used to make astrometric observations of standard = star HD59149 as part of a red reference transfer function (TF) = calibration. Observations were made through the pupil, clear, and = neutral density filters. The observations were completed as planed, and = no anomalies were noted. 1.11 Completed WF/PC-2 6253 (Pure Parallel Archive Program) The WF/PC-2 was used to execute a pure parallel program taking = ultraviolet observations running concurrently with prime science = observations. The intent is to search for extra-galactic sources with = flux excesses at 3000 A0 and galactic sources with excesses at 1600 A0. = The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were = reported. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 10 Successful : 10 Scheduled Reacquisitions : 5 Successful : 5 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled : 19 Successful : 19 2.3 Operations Notes: HST operations returned to Building 3 at approximately 10:00 p.m. = last night upon the the conclusion of GSFC Internal Simulation #11 3.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS: Nothing at this time. /DMH
