HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1748 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 10/28/96 - 0000Z (UTC) 10/29/96 Daily Status Report as of 303/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed WF/PC-2 6346 (Snapshot Survey of the Ultraluminous IRAS = Galaxy Sample-Part 1 High) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot survey observations of the = ultraluminous IRAS galaxy QDOTULIR07. These data will be searched for = multiple cores, which imply a merger has occurred, and for starburst = regions. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies = were noted. 1.2 Completed FOS/RD 6577 (An Expanded Survey for Study of the = Lyman-Alpha Line and QSO Mg II Absorption) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red side) was used to make = observations of the QSO B20827+24 in order to make a survey of the = Lyman-Alpha line and the 68 Mg II absorption line system. The = observations were completed as scheduled, and no problems were reported. 1.3 Completed WF/PC-2 6909 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 6 Calibration: Earth Flats) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the bright earth to = obtain streak flats which are used to construct high quality flat fields = for the WF/PC-2 filter set. The observations were executed as scheduled, = and no anomalies were noted. 1.4 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6253 (Pure Parallel Archive Program) The WF/PC-2 was used to execute a pure parallel program taking = ultraviolet observations running concurrently with prime science = observations. The intent is to search for extra-galactic sources with = flux excesses at 3000 A0 and galactic sources with excesses at 1600 A0. = The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were = reported. 1.5 Completed FOC/96 6349 (Snapshot search for High Redshift QSOs with = Far-UV Flux) The Faint Object Camera (f/96) was used to make snapshot images of = the quasi-stellar object Q0515-379. This is to determine if this high = redshifted object has a far ultraviolet flux. The observations were = executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.6 Completed Four Sets of WF/PC-2 6188 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5 Calibration: = Dark) The WF/PC-2 was used to make internal dark calibration images. = The observations were completed as scheduled, and no problems were = reported. 1.7 Completed WF/PC-2 6733 (Spatially Resolved Mapping of Titan's = Atmosphere ) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations at several different = wavelengths of the atmosphere on Saturn's largest moon Titan as part of a = spatially resolved mapping program. Methane gas and organic aerosols are = the major contributor to the atmospheres opacity. The observations were = completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.8 Completed GHRS/2 6586 (A Metal Absorption Line System in the Local = Supercluster) The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side Two) was used to make = spectrographic observations of the bright, Local Supercluster member, = Seyfert III, ZW2 galaxy in order to study its metal Mg II absorption line = system. It is possible that this galaxy is at the far edge of the local = supercluster, and thus at the edge of the large void between the local = supercluster and the Perseus-Pisces supercluster. The observations were = executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.9 Completed WF/PC-2 6347 (A Search for Jets in Planetary Nebulae) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the planetary nebulae = (class PNe) PK003+02D1 in order to search for the presence of possible = narrow jets. The current model for PNe formation indicates that jets are = an unexpected phenomena. Yet there is a growing body of circumstantial = evidence that suggests narrow jets are common feature in PNe. The = observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.10 Completed GHRS/1/2 7208 (Spectrographic Observations of the = Jovian Aurora) The High Resolution Spectrograph (Both Sides One and Two) were = used to make spectrographic observations of the auroral zones on the = planet Jupiter. Of primary interest is the spectrographic profile of the = Lyman-Alpha line at high and low resolution, in several characteristic = regions of the northern Jovian aurora. FGS #1 encountered servo problems = which caused a Loss-of-lock at 302/1200Z. The guide star acquisition at = 302/1200Z did not end up in Fine Lock. HSTAR 5763 was written. No other = problems were reported. 1.11 Completed WF/PC-2 6361 (High Resolution Imaging of X-Ray Selected = AGNs) The WF/PC-2 was used to make high resolution observations of the = known low red shifted x-ray active galactic nuclius of (AGN) MS1239.2+3. = These data will allow a study of the optical properties of an unbiased = sample of the AGN host galaxy. The observations were completed as = scheduled, and no problems were reported. 1.12 Completed WF/PC-2 5958 (HST Observations of New Gravitational = Lens Candidates) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of object J03.13-A = which is a candidate for a new gravitational lens system. A wavelength = calibration image was also taken. The observations were completed as = planned, and no problems were reported. 1.13 Completed WF/PC-2 7203 (Cosmology with the Medium Deep Survey - = Short Orbit Cases) The WF/PC-2 was used to take short (about 20 minute) exposures, to = be taken in parallel with the prime science observations, using the "I" = filter. These exposures are part of the medium-deep survey, which = emphasizes exposures that will be useful in obtaining cosmological = parameters. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems = were reported. 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 7 Successful : 7 Scheduled Reacquisitions : 11 Successful : 11 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled : 17 Successful : 17 2.3 Operations Notes: The JIS#1 EVA 1/Planning/EVA#2 continues into its second and final day.
