HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1777 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 12/11/96 - 0000Z (UTC) 12/12/96 Daily Status Report as of 347/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed WF/PC-2 6909 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 6 Calibration: Earth Flats) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the bright earth to = obtain streak flats which are used to construct high quality flat fields = for the WF/PC-2 filter set. The observations were executed as scheduled, = and no anomalies were noted. 1.2 Completed FOS/RD 6300 (The Nature of the Central UV Source in = M-31) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make = ultraviolet spectrographic observations of the central 0.5 arcsecond regio= n of galaxy M-31 (aka, NGC-224). The small aperture will be used to map = the stellar velocity dispersion and rotation within this grad shaped = area. As reported in yesterday's report and in HSTAR 5837, just before = the beginning of this 15-hour proposal, the primary acquisition and = immediate re-acquisition obtained fine lock on FGS #2 only. The = observations executed as scheduled, and no further anomalous activity was = noted. 1.3 Completed WF/PC-2 6253 (Pure Parallel Archive Program) The WF/PC-2 was used to execute a pure parallel program taking = ultraviolet observations running concurrently with prime science = observations. The intent is to search for extra-galactic sources with = flux excesses at 3000 A0 and galactic sources with excesses at 1600 A0. = The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were = reported. 1.4 Completed S/C 4974 (DF-224 FS Installation 9.0 and Higher) The HST was placed in V3 Sun Point Mode for the loading of Flight = Software 9.7.2 and 9.7.4. The operation was completed as scheduled. No = significant anomalies were encountered. 1.5 Completed WF/PC-2 6363 (The Environments and Host Galaxies of = BL-Lac Objects) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot survey observations of = BL-Lac object S4-1749+70 in order to study its environment and its host = galaxies. The goal is to investigate systematic trends in host galaxy = type, unusual morphological features, nearby companion galaxies, etc. = The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 6348 (Blue Continuum Snapshots of 3CR Radio = Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make some snapshot images of the blue = continuum in radio galaxy 3C125.0. Combined with existing data, these = exposures will provide high spatial resolution information on the color = distribution within galaxies, redding due to dust, spacial indices of the = optical synchrotron jets, and colors of the active nuclei and tidal jets. = The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were = noted. 1.7 Completed FOC/96 6350 (FOC spectroscopy of BALQSOs) The Faint Object Camera (f/96) was used to make ultraviolet = spectrographic images of BALQSO 0137-0153 which is known to show broad = emission lines from abundant ions. This will help us improve our = knowledge of these BAL class objects. The observations were executed as = scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 5 Successful : 5 Scheduled Reacquisitions : 10 Successful : 10 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled : 9 Successful : 9 2.3 Operations Notes: The installation and checkout of flight software versions 9.7.2 = and 9.7.4 was accomplished satisfactorily by 346/2049Z, with only minor = problems mentioned in HSTAR 5839. These miscompares and incorrectly set = safing tests were easily corrected. Due to WSGT MA equipment problems, 10 minutes and 59 seconds of = non-recoverable realtime data was lost, beginning at 347/040001Z. 3.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS: Nothing at this time. /DMH
