HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1780 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 12/16/96 - 0000Z (UTC) 12/17/96 Daily Status Report as of 352/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: At 349/152802Z and as described in HSTAR 5845, the HST entered software sunpoint mode. The following observations were lost due to the Safe Mode event: 1.1. WF/PC-2 6902 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 6 Photometric Calibration Monitor UV/OPT STD) 1.2. FOS/BL 6551 (Fishing the Coronal Graveyard) 1.3 Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6253 (Pure Parallel Archive Program) 1.4. WF/PC-2 6344 (Low - Mass Binaries in the Hyades - Completing the Survey) 1.5. WF/PC-2 6905 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 6 Calibration: Internal Monitor) 1.6. FOS/RD 6592 (The Distribution and Evolution of Lyman- Alpha Forest Cloud Sizes) 1.7. WF/PC-2 7202 (The WF/PC-2 B Band Parallel Survey: A Systematic and Synoptic Study of Galaxy Formation and Evolution - Short Orbit Case) 1.8. Four Sets of WF/PC-2 6909 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 6 Calibration: Earth Flats) At 351/1645Z, normal science operations resumed. 1.9 Completed WF/PC-2 6346 (Snapshot Survey of the Ultraluminous IRAS = Galaxy Sample-Part 1 High) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot survey observations of the = ultraluminous IRAS galaxy QDOTULR00. These data will be searched for = multiple cores, which imply a merger has occurred, and for starburst = regions. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies = were noted. During the execution of the following proposal, the HST entered hardware sunpoint mode. See 2.3 for details of the safemode entry. Although the proposal executed for seven hours, science results are not currently known. 1.10 GHRS/1/2 6522 (Probing the Extended Envelope of the Zeta Aur Type = Binary 32 Cyg.) The High Resolution Spectrograph (Sides One and Two) both were = used to make spectrographic observations of the Zeta Aug class binary = system HD192909 (aka, 32 Cyg) in order to study its extended envelope. = This binary system consists of a B class dwarf star, and a K class = supergiant that eclipses the dwarf. A wavelength calibration image was = also taken. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 3 Successful : 2 Scheduled Reacquisitions : 4 Successful : 4 As documented in HSTAR 5848, the acquisition at 351/1820Z failed. 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled : 4 Successful : 4 2.3 Operations Notes: Controllers lost contact with HST at 352/0213Z. Contact was = re-established 40 minutes later in "D" telemetry format, which indicated = that the HST was in hardware sunpoint mode. The PSEA successfully = captured the sun and all systems are safe. The aperture door was not = closed because the event occurred during orbit day. Earlier in the day flight software was uplinked to perform = diagnostics related to the intermittent 'bit 18' flips within the DF224. = A low probability timing problem with this software is believed to be the = cause of the problem. The DF224 was powered back on at 352/0536Z. With the PSEA = remaining in control, the vehicle control software was activated at = 352/0857Z, allowing an evaluation of the flight software performance with = the 'bit 19' software removed. This exercise showed no problems. Recovery to the science timeline is underway. Current tentative = plans are for the health and safety SMS to begin at 352/2300Z, and for = science operations to resume at 353/2200Z. 3.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS: SMGT-22 (SSR) for SM2 is scheduled to be run today. /DMH
