HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1784 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 12/20/96 - 0000Z (UTC) 12/23/96 Daily Status Report as of 358/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed Nine Sets of WF/PC-2 6253 (Pure Parallel Archive = Program) The WF/PC-2 was used to execute a pure parallel program taking = ultraviolet observations running concurrently with prime science = observations. The intent is to search for extra-galactic sources with = flux excesses at 3000 A0 and galactic sources with excesses at 1600 A0. = The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were = reported. 1.2 Completed WF/PC-2 6906 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 6 Calibration: Internal = Monitor-Visual Flats) The WF/PC-2 was used to make internal calibration visual flat = images as part of the Cycle 6 internal monitoring of the instrument's = operations. This proposal defines the standard series of internal flat = fields, which will be executed twice per month. The observations were = completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.3 Completed Two Sets of FOS/BL 6683 (Eclipsing Binaries in the = Magellanic Clouds - Fundamental Properties A) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Blue Side) was used to make = spectrographic observations of O/B Class, Eclipsing binary system star = LMC-EROS10 located in the Small Magellanic Cloud. From these data and = the latest Kurucz model atmospheres, accurate temperatures will be = derived. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies = were noted. 1.4 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6907 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 6 Calibration: = Internal Flats) The WF/PC-2 was used to make internal flat filter sweep = calibration images. This is a series of exposures to test the linearity o= f the camera. The observations were completed as planned and no problems = were reported. 1.5 Completed Six Sets of WF/PC-2 6904 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 6 = CalIibration:Darks) The WF/PC-2 was used to make a series of several dark calibration = images as part of a standard calibration within Cycle 6. This = calibration procedure is performed once per week as part of an on going = CCD calibration to be used to monitor and characterize hot pixels. The = observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.6 Completed FGS 6885 (L726-8/ UV-Ceti) The FGSs were used in both the POS and TRANS modes to make = astrometric observations of the star UV-Ceti. This is to look for short = period, low mass companions in orbit around the star. The observations = were completed as planned, an no anomalies were reported. 1.7 Completed WF/PC-2 6346 (Snapshot Survey of the Ultraluminous IRAS = Galaxy Sample-Part 1 High) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot survey observations of the = ultraluminous IRAS galaxy QDOTULIR00. These data will be searched for = multiple cores, which imply a merger has occurred, and for starburst = regions. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies = were noted. 1.8 Completed GHRS/1 6622 (UV Spectroscopy of DR1, the WO3 Star in = IC1613 and its Surrounding Nebula) The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side One) was used to make = ultraviolet spectrographic observations of the very luminous, WO3 = (Wolf-Rayet) class star DR-1 which is located in the metal-poor, dwarf, = irregular galaxy IC-1613-010. Observations were also be taken of its = surrounding nebula. The observations were completed as planned, and no = problems were reported. 1.9 Completed Five Sets of FOS/RD 6914 (FOS Cycle 6: Location of = Spectra and Wavelength Calibration - Red Side) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make both a = TALED and a wavelength calibration image. All observations were made = using internal light sources. This proposal will be executed a total of = 12 times during cycle 6 (i.e., once per month). The observations were = executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.10 Completed FGS 6921 (Intermediate Plate Scale Calibration) The FGSs were used in the POS mode to make astrometric observations= of stars HD65949 and 4727-227 and several other reference stars. These = data will be used for an intermediate plate scale calibration of the = central region of the FGSs, where all the annual parallax work is done. = The reference stars were taken from the HIPPARCOS observing list. The = observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.11 Completed FGS 6921 (Intermediate Plate Scale Calibration) The FGSs were used in the POS mode to make astrometric = observations of cluster NGC-5081 and several other reference stars. = These data will be used for an intermediate plate scale calibration of = the central region of the FGSs, where all the annual parallax work is = done. The reference stars were taken from the HIPPARCOS observing list. = The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.12 Completed WF/PC-2 7202 (The WF/PC-2 B Band Parallel Survey: A = Systematic and Synoptic Study of Galaxy Formation and Evolution - Short = Orbit Case) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations as part of a B-Band = Survey to make synoptic study of galaxy formation and evolution. These = observations were taken in parallel with the prime science observations. = They were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.13 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 7211 (WF/PC-2 Pre-SM97 UV Baseline = Observation.) The WF/PC-2 was used to make far-ultraviolet observations of CVZ = Class targets WD2126+734 and WD1042-690 as part of a pre-observation = baseline of SM97 (WF/PC-2 SMOV Calibration). The observations were = completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.14 Completed GHRS/2 6210 (GHRS Spatial PSF Characterization - Cycle = 5) The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side Two) was used to make observ= ations of standard star HD106343 as part of a Cycle 5 spatial point = spread function characterization using the small science aperture. This = is to study and evaluate the scattering of light contributed by objects = within 3 arcseconds of the GHRS's aperture. The observations were = completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.15 Completed FOS/RD 6715 (Ultraviolet Spectra of Saturn's = Satellites, Ion Modification) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make = ultraviolet spectrographic observations of Saturn's medium-sized moon = Dione in order to study the ion modification of the moon's surface ice = caused by one or more external processes. The observations were = completed as scheduled, and no problems were reported. 1.16 Completed FGS 6479 (Masses of Low Luminosity Hyades Cluster = Members) The FGSs were used to make astrometric observations of low = luminosity star VA351 which is a member to the Hyades Cluster. This = cluster, owing to its nearness, richness, and young age, occupies a = pivotal role in the studies of star formation and stellar populations. = The observations were executed as planned, and no anomalies were = reported. 1.17 Completed WF/PC-2 6937 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 6 CTE Calibration) The WF/PC-2 was used to make internal flat calibration images as = part of a CTE Cycle 6 calibration procedure. This procedure will test = whether the exposure time dependence of the photometric calibration is = due to the CTE (long vs. short exposure problem), and refine flux and = background level dependent aperture corrections. The calibration = operations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported 1.18 Completed FOS/RD 6547 (Cooled Gas in X-Ray Emitting Elliptical = Galaxies) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make = spectrographic observations of the quasi-stellar object/galaxy QSO1219+05 = in order to study the cool gas absorption spectra in this x-ray emitting = elliptical galaxy. It is thought that the origin of the gas is stellar = mass loss, and the x-ray emission cools the gas, leading to cooled = material that is distributed through the galaxy. The observations were = completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.19 Completed WF/PC-2 6361 (High Resolution Imaging of X-Ray Selected = AGNs) The WF/PC-2 was used to make high resolution observations of the = known low red shifted x-ray active galactic nuclius (AGN) MS1143.5-0. = These data will allow a study of the optical properties of an unbiased = sample of AGN host galaxy. The observations were completed as scheduled, = and no problems were reported. 1.20 Completed GHRS/1 6723 (Physical Conditions Near High Galactic = Latitude Molecular Clouds) The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side One) was used to make = observations of background star HD28497 whose light passes through a high = galactic molecular cloud. They are looking for complex interstellar line = profiles of Na II, Ca II and K. The observations were completed as = planned, and no problems were reported. 1.21 Completed WF/PC-2 6363 (The Environments and Host Galaxies of = BL-Lac Objects) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot survey observations of = BL-Lac object 1ES0229+20 in order to study its environment and its host = galaxy. The goal is to investigate systematic trends in host galaxy = type, unusual morphological features, nearby companion galaxies, etc. = The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.22 Completed GHRS/1 6700 (GHRS Spectroscopy of the Exposed White = Dwarf in The High Accretion Rate Dwarf Nova RX And) The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side One) will be used to make = ultraviolet spectrographic observations of the exposed, white dwarf nova, = star RX-And in order to study its high accretion rates. The observations = were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.23 Completed WF/PC-2 6360 (A Snapshot Survey of "Radio Loud" IRAS = Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot survey observations of the = radio loud IRAS galaxy GAL-2336+2. The instrument was used to discern = high surface brightness structures in its post-starburst active nuclear = regions. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies = were reported. 1.24 Completed GHRS/1 6638 (Physics of Defuse Clouds in the Local = Bubble, Part 1) The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side One) was used to make = observations of star HD52089 (aka, the Canus Major "Tunnel") in order to = study the physics of the defuse clouds in the local bubble. This high = resolution spectroscopy will enable the proposers to characterize the = interface between diffuse clouds and the hot bubble, measure the = ionization state and depletion level on the local environment. The = observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.25 Completed WF/PC-2 6713 (Geometric Measurement of Galaxy Distance) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of supernova remnant = SN1991T in order to make a distance calibration for the galaxy in which = it is located. The supernova is being used as a powerful new geometric = method for the determination of a galaxy's distance, by obtaining high = spatial resolution imageing polarization of the candidate supernova light = echoes.
