HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1794 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 01/13/97 - 0000Z (UTC) 01/14/97 Daily Status Report as of 014/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed WF/PC-2 6905 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 6 Calibration: Internal = Monitor) The WF/PC-2 was used to make several internal calibrations = observations, including biases and internal flats, as part of a Cycle 6 = calibration procedure. A variety of internal exposures are run weekly to = verify and monitor the health of the camera. The observations were = executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.2 Completed WF/PC-2 7211 (WF/PC-2 Pre-SM97 UV Baseline Observation.) The WF/PC-2 was used to make far-ultraviolet observations of CVZ = Class target WD1042-690 as part of a pre-observation baseline of SM97 = (WF/PC-2 SMOV Calibration). The observations were completed as = scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.3 Completed WF/PC-2 6348 (Blue Continuum Snapshots of 3CR Radio = Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make some snapshot images of the blue = continuum in radio galaxy 3C192.0. Combined with existing data, these = exposures will provide high spatial resolution information on the color = distribution within galaxies, redding due to dust, spacial indices of the = optical synchrotron jets, and colors of the active nuclei and tidal jets. = The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were = noted. 1.4 Completed GHRS/2 6615 (Fundamental Parameters of White Dwarfs in = Close Binaries) The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side Two) was used to make = spectrographic observations of the close binary system EUVE-j1016 (a = white dwarf/M-dwarf binary system) in order to obtain fundamental = parameters of its white dwarf star. As the older star ages through the = asymptotic branch phase, the gaseous envelope which compasses both stars = dissipates and the white dwarf becomes visible. A wavelength calibration = image was also taken. The observations were executed as scheduled, and = no anomalies were noted. 1.5 Completed FOS/BL 6532 (A Definitive Test for the Excitation = Mechanism of LINERs) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Blue Side) was used to make = ultraviolet and visible spectrographic observations of the spiral galaxy = NGC-1052 (aka, M-81) as part of a definitive test for the external = excitation mechanism of LINERs. This is to determine if LINERs are = either photo-ionized or shock-ionized, by obtaining FOS spectra from 1150 = A0 through 6800 A0 by viewing its gas disk. As reported in yesterday's = Daily Report #1793 and in HSTAR 5875, the dual acquisitions for this = proposal had problems. The first acquisition failed to SSM control, and = the second failed to fine lock on FGS #1 only. Otherwise, the observation= s were executed as scheduled, and no further anomalies were noted. 1.6 Completed Four Sets of WF/PC-2 6802 (Cosmology with The Medium = Deep Survey) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations in parallel with the = prime science observations as part of the Medium Deep Survey. These = parallel MDS exposures have provided unique high resolution images which = clearly supplement the primary HST surveys. The observations were = executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted 1.7 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6346 (Snapshot Survey of the = Ultraluminous IRAS Galaxy Sample-Part 1 High) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot survey observations of the = ultraluminous IRAS galaxies CL ULIR235 and QDOTULIR03. These data will = be searched for multiple cores, which imply a merger has occurred, and = for starburst regions. The observations were executed as scheduled, and = no anomalies were noted. 1.8 Completed FOS/RD 6080 (Rotation and Kinematics of Blue Stragglers = in 47 Tuc) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make = spectrographic observations for blue straggler stars located in 47 Tuc = (aka, NGC-104) in order to study their rotation and radial velocity of = these stars. Approximately one hour into this six-hour proposal, an FOS = status buffer message indicated that the FOS microprocessor workload was = too heavy for the instrument to perform its background tasks. Two = minutes later another message told of a successful Y-speed test. These = events are recorded in HSTAR 5876. Otherwise, the observations completed = as scheduled, and no furtheranomalies were noted. 1.9 Completed WF/PC-2 6253 (Pure Parallel Archive Program) The WF/PC-2 was used to execute a pure parallel program taking = ultraviolet observations running concurrently with prime science = observations. The intent is to search for extra-galactic sources with = flux excesses at 3000 A0 and galactic sources with excesses at 1600 A0. = The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were = reported. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 8 Successful : 8 Scheduled Reacquisitions : 11 Successful : 11 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled : 9 Successful : 9 2.3 Operations Notes: There were no reported operational problems. 3.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS: Nothing at this time. /DMH
