HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1796 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 01/15/97 - 0000Z (UTC) 01/16/97 Daily Status Report as of 016/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed WF/PC-2 7203 (Cosmology with the Medium Deep Survey - = Short Orbit Cases) The WF/PC-2 was used to take short (about 20 minute) exposures, to = be taken in parallel with the prime science observations, using the I = filter. These exposures are part of the medium-deep survey, which = emphasizes exposures that will be useful in obtaining cosmological = parameters. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems = were reported. 1.2 Completed FOS/RD 7204 (Pre-Perihelion Observations of the = International Rosetta Mission Target) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make = pre-perihelion, ultraviolet, spectrographic observations Comet Wirtanen = (aka, comet 46/P) as part of a target viewing for the International = Rosetta Mission which is scheduled to be launched in the year 2003. The = observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.3 Completed FOS/RD 6487 (Spectroscopy of the Inner Satellites of = Uranus) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make prism = spectrographic observations of the star HD30246 (which is currently near = Uranus). This is part of a pre-study of Uranus' inner moons Miranda, = Puck, Portia and Juliet. Near the beginning of this proposal, a guide = star acquisition failed to fine lock on FGS #3 only. HSTAR 5878 was = written. Otherwise, the observations completed as planned, and no = further problems were reported. 1.4 Completed WF/PC-2 6253 (Pure Parallel Archive Program) The WF/PC-2 was used to execute a pure parallel program taking = ultraviolet observations running concurrently with prime science = observations. The intent is to search for extra-galactic sources with = flux excesses at 3000 A0 and galactic sources with excesses at 1600 A0. = The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were = reported. 1.5 Completed FOS/RD 6914 (FOS Cycle 6: Location of Spectra and = Wavelength Calibration - Red Side) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make both a = TALED and a wavelength calibration image. All observations were made = using internal light sources. This proposal will be executed a total of = 12 time during cycle 6 (i.e., once per month). The observations were = executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.6 Completed FGS 6047 (Calibrating the Mass Luminosity Relation at = the End of the Main Sequence) The FGSs were used to make astrometric observations of the = binarystars GL494A and B as part of a study to determine its mass = luminosity relationship. The purpose is to measure the precise parallax = and relative orbit of its faint companion. The observations were = completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.7 Completed WF/PC-2 6906 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 6 Calibration: Internal = Monitor-Visual Flats) The WF/PC-2 was used to make internal calibration visual flat = images as part of the Cycle 6 internal monitoring of the instrument's = operations. This proposal defines the standard series of internal flat = fields, which will be executed twice per month. The observations were = completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.8 Completed FOS/BL 6781 (Soft X-Rays and the UV Spectra of a = Complete QSO Sample) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Blue Side) was used to obtain = ultraviolet spectra of the low-Z quasi-stellar object PG1001+054. The = ionization continuum of this object has been studied using the ROSAT = satellite. The strengths and line profiles of strong and weak = ultraviolet emission and absorption lines and the ultraviolet continuum = were studied. The observations were completed as planned and no = anomalies were reported. 1.9 Completed Four Sets of WF/PC-2 7202 (The WF/PC-2 B Band Parallel = Survey: A Systematic and Synoptic Study of Galaxy Formation and Evolution = - Short Orbit Case) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations as part of a B-Band = Survey to make synoptic study of galaxy formation and evolution. These = observations were taken in parallel with the prime science observations. = They were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.10 Completed Four Sets of WF/PC-2 6909 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 6 Calibration: = Earth Flats) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the bright Earth to = obtain streak flats which are used to construct high quality flat fields = for the WF/PC-2 filter set. The observations were executed as scheduled, = and no anomalies were noted. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 9 Successful : 7 HSTAR 5878 describes an acquisition at 015/1225Z which failed to = fine lock backup on FGS #3 only. HSTAR 5879 describes another acquisition at 016/013554Z whiched = failed to fine lock backup on FGS #1 only. In this case the seven subsequ= ent re-acquisitions failed in the same manner.
