HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1797 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 01/16/97 - 0000Z (UTC) 01/17/97 Daily Status Report as of 017/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed Two Sets of FOS/RD 6914 (FOS Cycle 6: Location of = Spectra and Wavelength Calibration - Red Side) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make both a = TALED and a wavelength calibration image. All observations were made = using internal light sources. This proposal will be executed a total of = 12 time during cycle 6 (i.e., once per month). The observations were = executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.2 Completed GHRS/2 6593 (Origin and Physical Conditions in the Local = Lyman-Alpha Forest) The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side Two) was used to make high = resolution spectral observations of active galactic nuclei of Mark279 in = order to study the origin and physical conditions of the local = Lyman-Alpha forest cloud which lies in the foreground of the quasar. The = study of these data should provide a better understanding of the origin = and physical conditions in this cloud and its relationship, if any, to = near by galaxies. As reported in yesterday's report and in HSTAR 5879, th= e initial acquisition and the following seven re-acquisitions all failed = to fine lock backup on FGS #1 only. However, the observations completed = as planned, and no further anomalies were reported. 1.3 Completed FOS/BL 6551 (Fishing the Coronal Graveyard) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Blue Side) was used to make = far-ultraviolet emission spectra observations of the K class giant star = HD131873. The objective is to obtain some insight into coronal activity = among giants which ought to have quiet coronae. The observations were = executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.4 Completed WF/PC-2 6099 (Black Holes and Cores of Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to search for possible black holes in the = cores of nearby early-type galaxy NGC-4552. The WF/PC-2 was be used to = obtain high resolution images of this galaxy to identify its bright core, = and to provide sufficiently accurate coordinates for the FOS, which will = be used to measure the velocity dispersion around this galaxy. The observ= ations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.5 Completed WF/PC-2 6253 (Pure Parallel Archive Program) The WF/PC-2 was used to execute a pure parallel program taking = ultraviolet observations running concurrently with prime science = observations. The intent is to search for extra-galactic sources with = flux excesses at 3000 A0 and galactic sources with excesses at 1600 A0. = The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were = reported. 1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 7202 (The WF/PC-2 B Band Parallel Survey: A = Systematic and Synoptic Study of Galaxy Formation and Evolution - Short = Orbit Case) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations as part of a B-Band = Survey to make synoptic study of galaxy formation and evolution. These = observations were taken in parallel with the prime science observations. = They were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 7 Successful : 6 Scheduled Reacquisitions : 11 Successful : 9 At 017/0338Z, the initial guide star acquisition failed to fine = lock backup on FGS #3 only. The subsequent two re-acquisitions also = failed in the same manner. HSTAR 5880 was written. 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled : 10 Successful : 10 2.3 Operations Notes: There were no significant reported operational problems. 3.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS: Nothing at this time. /DMH
