HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1808 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 02/03/97 - 0000Z (UTC) 02/04/97 Daily Status Report as of 035/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed FOS/BL/GHRS/1 6795 (Sleuthing the Dynamo: The Final = Frontier) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Blue Side) and the High Resolution = Spectrograph (Side One) were both used to make ultraviolet observations = of late-type STAR-0344. This is to study the nature of its magnetic = activity, which is thought to be the link between the hydro-magnetic = dynamo deep inside the star and the violent state of its outer most = coronal layers. The observations were completed as planned, and no = problems were reported. 1.2 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 7553 (Pure Parallel Archive Survey = II) WF/PC-2 parallel observations were obtained in the ultraviolet in = search for interesting objects. This program is designed to find = extragalactic sources with near ultraviolet excesses (3000 A0) outside = the galactic plane and far ultraviolet sources (1600 A0) in the galactic = plane. The procedure was executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were = reported. 1.3 Completed FGS 6479 (Masses of Low Luminosity Hyades Cluster = Members) The FGSs were used to make astrometric observations of low = luminosity star VA351 which is a member to the Hyades Cluster. This = cluster, owing to its nearness, richness, and young age, occupies a = pivotal role in the studies of star formation and stellar populations. = The observations were executed as planned, and no anomalies were = reported. 1.4 Completed WF/PC-2 6348 (Blue Continuum Snapshots of 3CR Radio = Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make some snapshot images of the blue = continuum in radio galaxy 3C22.0. Combined with existing data, these = exposures will provide high spatial resolution information on the color = distribution within galaxies, redding due to dust, spacial indices of the = optical synchrotron jets, and colors of the active nuclei and tidal jets. = The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were = noted. 1.5 Completed Two Sets of FOS/RD 6039 (The young , Rapidly-Evolving = Planetary nebula HE3-1357) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make = spectrographic observations of the young, rapidly evolving planetary = nebula HE3-1357 (Sectors R, S and O). It appears that this planetary = nebula is no older than 40 years. The evolution of this object should = allow a strict test of the models and theories for the early evolution of = planetary nebulae. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no = anomalies were noted. 1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 6629 (Observations of a New Sample of = Gravitational Lens Candidate) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the gravitational = lens candidate QSO-103334. This object was identified in the first and = second phases of the Cosmic Lens All-Sky Survey done with the Very Large = Array radio telescope. The observations were executed as scheduled, and = no anomalies were noted. 1.7 Completed WF/PC-2 6557 (WF/PC-2 Imaging of Intermediate Redshift = Absorption Selected Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the galaxy Q1511-FIEL = where a halo appears to be absorbing light from the background = quasi-stellar object (QSO). The observations were completed as planned, = and no problems were reported. 1.8 Completed WF/PC-2 6773 (The Bucher-Oemler Effect in Nearby = Clusters of Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of several starburst and = post-starburst regions the nearby galaxies and the coma of galaxy = DC2048-D15. These data will be studied to determine what triggers major = episodes of star formation and what physically undermines the observed = Butcher-Oemler effect in more distant galaxies. The observations were = completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.9 Completed WF/PC-2 6344 (Low - Mass Binaries in the Hyades - = Completing the Survey) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the low mass binary = star RHY206 (M-Class Dwarf Stars) which is located in the Hyades Cluster. = The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were = noted. 1.10 Completed WF/PC-2 6749 (A Study of the Gaseous Halo of the = Andromeda Galaxy) The WF/PC-2 was used to make absorption line spectrographic = observations of object QSO 0035+4112A which is located behind the = Andromeda Galaxy (aka, M-31) in order to study the galaxy's gaseous halo. = The QSO's light passes through the galaxy. The distribution, ionization,= and kinematics of the gas will be investigated. The observations were = completed as planned and no anomalies were reported. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 6 Successful : 6 Scheduled Reacquisitions : 7 Successful : 7 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled : 14 Successful : 14 2.3 Operations Notes: There were no operational problems. 3.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS: Nothing at this time. /DMH
