HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1813 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 02/10/97 - 0000Z (UTC) 02/11/97 Daily Status Report as of 042/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: Science observations will continue after the launch of the STS-82 = mission for approximately seven hours. At that time the Health and = Safety SMS will be initiated. 1.1 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6904 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 6 Cal.:Darks) The WF/PC-2 was used to make a series of several dark calibration = images as part of a standard calibration within Cycle 6. This = calibration procedure is performed once per week as part of an on going = CCD calibration to be used to monitor and characterize hot pixels. The = observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.2 Completed WF/PC-2 7211 (WF/PC-2 Pre-SM97 UV Baseline Observation.) The WF/PC-2 was used to make far-ultraviolet observations of CVZ = Class target WD2126+734 as part of a pre-observation baseline of SM97 = (WF/PC-2 SMOV Calibration). The observations were completed as = scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.3 Completed WF/PC-2 6904 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 6 Cal.:Darks) The WF/PC-2 was used to make a series of several dark calibration = images as part of a standard calibration within Cycle 6. This calibration = procedure is performed once per week as part of an on going CCD = calibration to be used to monitor and characterize hot pixels. The = observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.4 Completed FOS/BL 6623 (HST Imaging and Spectroscopy of the = Peculiar LMC H II Regions on N44C) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Blue Side) was used to make = observations of H II region LMC-N44C-S which is located in the Large = Magellanic Cloud. This region exhibits unusually strong nebular = recombination emission from He II, indicating a hard rediation field. = However the ionizing star appears to be just a normal O class star. The = observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.5 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 7553 (Pure Parallel Archive Survey = II) WF/PC-2 parallel observations were obtained in the ultraviolet in = search for interesting objects. This program is designed to find = extragalactic sources with near ultraviolet excesses (3000 A0) outside = the galactic plane and far ultraviolet sources (1600 A0) in the galactic = plane. The procedure was executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were = reported. 1.6 Completed FOS/RD 6765 (A Test For Products of Oxygen Burning in = the Crab Nebula) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make = observations of STAR-05343 which is located within the Crab Nebula (aka , = M-1) in order to test for products of oxygen burning. The young supernova= within the Crab nebula can provide unique information about the = supernova process and associated heavy element production. The = observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.7 Completed WF/PC-2 7203 (Cosmology with the Medium Deep Survey - = Short Orbit Cases) The WF/PC-2 was used to take short (about 20 minute) exposures, to = be taken in parallel with the prime science observations, using the I = filter. These exposures are part of the medium-deep survey, which emphasi= zes exposures that will be useful in obtaining cosmological parameters. = The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were = reported. 1.8 Completed WF/PC-2 6348 (Blue Continuum Snapshots of 3CR Radio = Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make some snapshot images of the blue = continuum in radio galaxy 3C230.0. Combined with existing data, these = exposures will provide high spatial resolution information on the color = distribution within galaxies, redding due to dust, spacial indices of the = optical synchrotron jets, and colors of the active nuclei and tidal jets. = The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were = noted. 1.9 Completed FOS/BL 6053 (Extreme UV Stars in Omega Cent) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Blue Side) was used to = spectrographic make observations of extremely ultraviolet bright stars in = NGC-5139 (aka, Omega Cent). These stars were also viewed by the UIT on = ASTRO-1. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies = were noted. 1.10 Completed WF/PC-2 6490 (Deep Imaging of Extended Optical = Structure Around the Quasar 4C37.43) The WF/PC-2 was used to make deep images of the extended optical = region around quasar 4C37.43 (aka, B2-1512+37). This quasar has the most = luminous extended region of any low red shifted quasi-stellar source. = The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were = reported. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 7 Successful : 7 Scheduled Reacquisitions : 11 Successful : 11 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled : 13 Successful : 13 2.3 Operations Notes: STS-82 was successfully launched this morning, Tuesday, Feb 11, = 1997 (042/0855Z) on the HST SM-2 mission. No opertation anomalies were reported. 3.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS: Instercept of the Health and Saftey SMS is scheduled to take place = approximently seven hours after the STS-82 launch. /DMH
