HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1814 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 02/11/97 - 0000Z (UTC) 02/12/97 Daily Status Report as of 043/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: Science observations were continued after the launch of the STS-82 = mission for approximately seven hours (Until approximately 042/13/42Z). = At that time the HST spacecraft was placed in a special attitude (+V3 sun = pointing attitude) and there was science instrument configuration for = rendezvous and capture. The following SMS science observations were executed before the start of = the Health and Safety SMS: 1.1 Completed WF/PC-2 6352 (Dwarf Elliptical Galaxy Snapshots) The WF/PC-2 was used to survey LGC50, from a sample of 30 dwarf = elliptical galaxies. The observations were completed as planned, and no = anomalies were reported. 1.2 Completed WF/PC-2 6362 (Supernova Host Galaxy) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the supernova host = galaxy GAL-115033. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no = anomalies were noted. 1.3 Completed Three Sets of WF/PC-2 6904 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 6 Cal. = :Darks) The WF/PC-2 was used to make a series of dark calibration images = as part of a standard calibration within Cycle 6. This calibration = procedure is performed once per week as part of an on going CCD = calibration to be used to monitor and characterize hot pixels. The = observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.4 Completed FOS/RD 6548 (The Cool Interstellar Medium in Hot = Clusters of Galaxies) The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make = spectrographic observations of the quasar QSO0909-09 in order to study = the cool interstellar medium in hot clusters of galaxies. Three = important phenomena can produce cool absorbing gas enrich clusters of = galaxies: striping of galactic gas by the hot ambient medium, in-fall of = cool gas into the cluster, and the radiative cooling of the hot gas in = the cluster core by cooling flows. The observations were executed as = scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.5 Completed Three Sets of WF/PC-2 6802 (Cosmology with The Medium = Deep Survey) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations in parallel with the = prime science observations as part of the Medium Deep Survey. These = parallel MDS exposures have provided unique high resolution images which = clearly supplement the primary HST surveys. The observation were = executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted 1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 6909 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 6 Calibration: Earth Flats The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the bright Earth to = obtain streak flats which are used to construct high quality flat fields = for the WF/PC-2 filter set. The observations were executed as scheduled, = and no anomalies were noted. 1.7 Completed GHRS/1/2 6928 (GHRS Far UV Throughput without Costar = Mirrors-Cycle 6 Close-out) The GHRS remains safed. The low voltage power supply was turned = off at 038/1605Z. No observations were taken. 1.8 Completed WF/PC-2 7553 (Pure Parallel Archive Survey II) WF/PC-2 parallel observations were obtained in the ultraviolet in = search for interesting objects. This program is designed to find = extragalactic sources with near ultraviolet excesses (3000 A0) outside = the galactic plane and far ultraviolet sources (1600 A0) in the galactic = plane. The procedure was executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were = reported. ********** End of Science observations ********* 1.9 Completed S/C 4779 (Vehicle Attitude and Configuration of = Servicing Mission) The HST spacecraft was placed in a special attitude (+V3 sun = pointing attitude) and the science instruments were configured for = rendezvous and capture. This proposal defines the end of the last STSci = SMS. The operations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were = reported. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 3 Successful : 3 Scheduled Reacquisitions : 8 Successful : 8 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled : 15 Successful : 15 2.3 Operations Notes: STS-82 was successfully launched Tuesday, Feb. 11, 1997 (042/0855Z) on = the HST SM-2 mission. Intercept of the Health and Safety SMS occurred as scheduled = approximately seven hours after the STS-82 launch. All pre-rendezvous operations are going as expected. 3.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS: SM-2 HST rendezvous and capture on Thursday, Feb. 13, 1997. This will be the last Daily Report submitted until approximately = flight day nine with the start of SMOV. Special bulletins will be written = and posted as needed during the SM-2 mission. /DMH
