HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1831 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 03/10/97 - 0000Z (UTC) 03/11/97 Daily Status Report as of 070/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed WF/PC-2 6366 (The Early Onset of Asymmetric Outflow = During the Planetary Nebula Formation) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the planetary nebula = V1027-Cygni in order to study its asymmetric outflow during its = formation. The purpose of these exposures was to determine the = characteristics of the mass loss that occurs as a star leaves the = asymptotic giant branch. The observations were completed as planned, and = no problems were reported. 1.2 Completed WF/PC-2 5927 (Nuclear Disks in Radio Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the radio galaxy 3C75 = in order to study its nuclear disk. This will be used to establish the = morphology and characteristics of the disk, and the alignment of the disk = with the radio jet. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no = anomalies were noted. 1.3 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6363 (The Environments and Host = Galaxies of BL-Lac Objects) 363 The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot survey observations of = BL-Lac object H1722+119 in order to study its environment and its host = galaxy. The goal is to investigate systematic trends in host galaxy = type, unusual morphological features, nearby companion galaxies, etc. = The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.4 Completed Four Sets of WF/PC-2 6852 (The Martian Surface and = Atmosphere) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the planet Mars to = make high-resolution observations of the surface and atmosphere just = before (or during) the March 1997 opposition. These observations = employed PC exposures with full-aperture filters, the methane quad = filter, and linear ramp filters. The observations were executed as = scheduled, and no anonmalies were noted. 1.5 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6361 (High Resolution Imaging of = X-Ray Selected AGNs) The WF/PC-2 was used to make high resolution observations of the = known low, red-shifted x-ray active galactic nucleus (AGN) MS1219.6+7. = These data will allow a study of the optical properties of an unbiased = sample of AGN host galaxies. The observations were completed as = scheduled, and no problems were reported. 1.6 Completed Two Sets of STIS/CCD 7075 (STIS Corrector Alignment, = Coarse) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make = observations of object G191B2B in order to study the systems coarse = alignment. This procedure will bring the STIS corrector system into = approximate alignment in both focus and tip/tilt. The observations were = completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.7 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6587 (Black Holes and Cores of = Early-Type Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of early-type galaxies = NGC-2974 and NGC-3557 in order to study their nuclear core regions and = their possible black holes. The campaign to find black holes in the = centers of galaxies using HST has so far been highly successful. The = observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.8 Completed WF/PC-2 6359 (Core Properties of the Bulges of Spiral = Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot survey observations of = spiral galaxy ESO317G20 in order to study its central bulge. The aim is = to investigate the core properties, correlations with global galactic prop= erties, and the frequency of occurrence of multiple and/or miscentered = nuclei. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies = were noted. 1.9 Completed FGS 7026 (Fold Flat 3 (FF3) Position Optimization for = FGS-1R) The FGSs were used to make FF3-C, FGS-1R S-curves which will be = optimized to achieve a modulation within 10 percent of the maximum = accepted value at a particular field location and to produce an = acceptable set of S-curves over the entire FGS field of view (FOV). The = observations were completed as planned and no problems were reported. 1.10 Completed WF/PC-2 7022 (WF/PC-2 SM97 MONITOR) This calibration proposal is the routine internal monitor for = WF/PC-2, to be run twice weekly to monitor the health of the cameras. A = variety of internal exposures were obtained in order to provide a monitor = of the integrity of the CCD camera electronics in both bays (gain 7 and = gain 15), a test for quantum efficiency in the CCDs, an internal check on = the alignment of the WF/PC-2 optical chain, and a monitor for possible = buildup of contaminants on the CCD windows. This observation was = completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.11 Completed WF/PC-2 6792 (Planetary Nebulae With Supporting = Infrared Data) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the planetary nebula = NGC-6818. Recent work has shown that nebular abundances derived from = recombination lines are up to a factor of five larger than those obtained = from the traditional optical/UV collisionally excited lines. The = observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 14 Successful : 14 Scheduled Reacquisitions : 2 Successful : 2 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled : 35 Successful : 35 2.3 Operations Notes: There were no reported opertional problems. 3.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS: Continuation of SMOV activities. /DMH
