HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1834 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 03/13/97 - 0000Z (UTC) 03/14/97 Daily Status Report as of 073/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed WF/PC-2 7016 (WF/PC-2 SM97 UV Monitor And Cool Down = Procedure) This operation was used as a post-SM97 cooldown of the WF/PC-2 CCD = to -88C with frequent monitoring of contamination via standard star = GRW+70D582 observations in filter F170W. An internal flat and a dark = calibration image were also taken. The observations were completed as = planed, and no problems were reported 1.2 Completed WF/PC-2 6346 (Snapshot Survey of the Ultraluminous IRAS = Galaxy Sample-Part 1 High) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot survey observations of the = ultraluminous IRAS galaxy QDOTULIR13. These data will be searched for = multiple cores, which imply a merger has occurred, and for starburst = regions. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies = were noted. 1.3 Completed WF/PC-2 6855 (The Disks Around Young Stellar Objects) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the disk surrounding = the young stellar object LKCA15. Circumstellar material has been = detected at 1.3 mm around about 50% of the young (T<10^6 yr) stellar = objects in the Taurus-Auriga molecular cloud. The observations permit an = estimate of the material's spatial extent, mass and temperature. The = observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.4 Completed WF/PC-2 6639 (Star Clusters and The Duration of = Starbursts) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the star cluster = NGC-3310 in order to study the duration of its starbursts. Starbursts = are a fascinating but poorly understood phenomenon that probably play a = key role in galaxy evolution. The observations were completed as = planned, and no problems were reported. 1.5 Completed WF/PC-2 6363 (The Environments and Host Galaxies of = BL-Lac Objects) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot survey observations of = BL-Lac object MS1704.9+6 in order to study its environment and its host = galaxies. The goal is to investigate systematic trends in host galaxy = type, unusual morphological features, nearby companion galaxies, etc. As = documented in HSTAR 5977, the primary guide star acquisition scheduled = for this proposal at 072/1115Z was late, and the take data flag went up = later than anticipated. One observation may have been affected. = Otherwise, the observations executed as scheduled, and no further = anomalies were noted. 1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 6583 (The Origin of the Alignment Effect: = WF/PC-2 Imaging Polarimetry of High Redshift Radio Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make imaging polarimetry observations of = the high redshifted galaxy 3C265. These polarimetric observations are = crucial to the understanding of the spectacular morphologies recently = discovered in high redshift radio galaxies by HST, and to the = investigation of morphological and evolutionary links between radio galaxi= es and quasars. The observation were completed as scheduled, and no = anomalies were reported. 1.7 Completed STIS/CCD 7092 (CCD Dark Rate and Read Noise) Observations were taken to measure CCD dark current and gather = data for making super darks. A bias calibration was also completed. The = observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.8 Completed WF/PC-2 6887 (A Photometric Search for Faint Companions = to Nearby Stars) The WF/PC-2 was used to make a photometric search observations of = the nearby star WOLF359 in order to look for possible companions. The = technique involves use of the Planetary Camera with wide band pass = filters to photometrically measure for the presence of resolved dark = companions. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no = anomalies were noted. 1.9 Completed WF/PC-2 6773 (The Bucher-Oemler Effect in Nearby = Clusters of Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of several starburst and = post-starburst regions the nearby galaxies and the coma of DC2048-D19. = These data will be studied to determine what triggers major episodes of = star formation and what physically undermines the observed Butcher-Oemler = effect in more distant galaxies. The acquisition for this proposal, = scheduled for 072/215554, defaulted to fine lock backup on FGS #2 only. = HSTAR 5979 was written. The observations completed as planned, and no = further problems were reported. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 9 Successful : 9 As described in 1.5, one acquisition occurred later than = anticipated. Also, as mentioned in 1.9, one acquisition defaulted to = fine lock backup on one FGS. Scheduled Reacquisitions : 5 Successful : 5 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled : 17 Successful : 17 2.3 Operations Notes: There were no significant operational problems. It was reported today in HSTAR 5980 that on 059/000400Z a NICMOS = dewar thermal short occurred. It was noted that unexpected changes began = in the detector warmup rate and the vapor cooled shield cooldown rate. = Analysis indicated that a thermal short developed between the front of = the coldwell and the front of the VCS in the vicinity of the C2 cold = mask. Thermal expansion of the frozen N2 in the tank has caused one or = more light baffles mounted on the filter wheel housing (on the VCS) to = contact the front of the coldwell, causing the VCS to cool and the = coldwell to warm. 3.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS: Continuation of SMOV activities. /DMH
