HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1835 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 03/14/97 - 0000Z (UTC) 03/17/97 Daily Status Report as of 076/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed WF/PC-2 6565 (Imaging of Proto-Planetary Nebulae) The WF/PC-2 was used to make high resolution observations of the = proto-planeatary nebula IRAS17150 which is known to show bipolar = morphologies in ground-based observations. The observations were = executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.2 Completed WF/PC-2 6366 (The Early Onset of Asymmetric Outflow = During the Planetary Nebula Formation) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the planetary nebula = QY Sge in order to study its asymmetric outflow during its formation. = The purpose of these exposures was to determine the characteristics of = the mass loss that occurs as a star leaves the asymptotic giant branch. = The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported.= 1.3 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6673 (Black Holes and Gas Disks in a = Complete Sample of Radio-Loud UGC Ellipticals) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of radio-load, = elliptical galaxies UGC05073 and UGC07455 in order to search for possible = black holes and gas disks. Hydrogen-Alpha and broad band observations = were taken to determine the luminosity profiles and stellar populations = (on the tens of parsec scale), and detect nuclear regions or disks of gas = and dust. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies = were reported. 1.4 Completed WF/PC-2 6740 (Hyper-Luminous IRAS Galaxies: Star = Formation, AGN or LENSES?) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the hyper-luminous = IRAS galaxy FSC10026+4 in order determine if its luminous state is a = result to its being a gravitational lens system or an active galactic = nuclei (AGN) system. This IRAS galaxy is known to emit an enormous = amount of power (>10^13 LSUN) in the far infrared. The observations were = completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.5 Completed WF/PC-2 6583 (The Origin of the Alignment Effect: = WF/PC-2 Imaging Polarimetry of High Redshift Radio Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make imaging polarimetry observations of = the high redshifted galaxies 3C266 and 3C265. These polarimetric = observations are crucial to the understanding of the spectacular = morphologies recently discovered in high redshift radio galaxies by HST, = and to the investigation of morphological and evolutionary links between = radio galaxies and quasars. The observation were completed as scheduled, = and no anomalies were reported. 1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 6837 (The Ultraviolet Properties of "Dwarf" = Seyfert 1 Nuclei) The WF/PC-2 was used to make ultraviolet observations of the = "dwarf", type-one, Seyfert galaxy NGC-2639. This class of "dwarf" = Seyfert populate the faint end of the local AGN luminosity function and = hold important clues to the evolution of the entire AGN population. The = observations were completed as scheduled, and no problems were reported. 1.7 Completed WF/PC-2 6587 (Black Holes and Cores of Early-Type = Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of early-type galaxy = NGC-4125 in order to study its nuclear core region and its possible black = hole. The campaign to find black holes in the centers of galaxies using = HST has so far been highly successful. The observations were completed = as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.8 Completed STIS/CCD 7099 (CCD Flat-Field Stability and Cosmetic = Defect Fraction) These observations were used to verify cosmetic defect fraction on = the CCD using flat-field images, and to investigate flat-field stability = over short (minutes) and long (days) time intervals. The observations were executed as scheduled, = and no anomalies were noted. 1.9 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6361 (High Resolution Imaging of = X-Ray Selected AGNs) The WF/PC-2 was used to make high resolution observations of the = known low red shifted x-ray active galactic nuclei (AGN) MS1420.1+2 and = MS0340.3+0. These data will allow a study of the optical properties of = an unbiased sample of AGN host galaxies. The observations were completed = as scheduled, and no problems were reported. 1.10 Completed WF/PC-2 7016 (WF/PC-2 SM97 UV Monitor And Cool Down = Procedure) This operation was used as a post-SM97 cooldown of the WF/PC-2 CCD = to -88C with frequent monitoring of contamination via standard star = GRW+70D582 observations in filter F170W. An internal flat and a dark = calibration image were also taken. The observations were completed as = planed, and no problems were reported 1.11 Completed STIS/CCD 7063 (STIS SMOV CCD Contamination Monitor) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph/CCD was used to measure = the flux from the standard star G191B2B and to look for any gross changes = over time that might indicate contamination. A waveline contamination = image was also taken. The observations were executed as planned, and no = anomalies were reported. 1.12 Completed WF/PC-2 6826 (The Galactic Wind in M-82: Structure and = Excitation of the Optical Filaments) The WF/PC-2 was used to make narrow-band image observations of = galaxy NGC-3034 (aka, M-82) in order to study its structure and the = excitation of its optical filaments, and the nature of emission lines of = H-Alpha, [N II] 6583 A0, [O I] 6300 A0, and [O III] 5007 A0. The = observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.13 Completed FGS 6879 (Parallax of TV-Col) The FGSs were used to make astrometric observations of the x-ray = variable star TV-Col to obtain its precise parallax measurements. The = observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.14 Completed WF/PC-2 6787 (Fine Structure in Ejection Nebulae Around = Population I and II Wolf-Rayet Stars) The WF/PC-2 was used to study the fine structure of the ejection = nebula around the Wolf-Rayet star PK050+03D1. The unique high spatial = resolution and wide field of WF/PC-2 camera was used to test = quantitatively for the presence of supersonic, compressible turbulence in = nebulae ejected by hot the W-R stars. The observations were executed as = planed, and no anomalies were reported. 1.15 Completed WF/PC-2 7019 (WF/PC-2 SMOV Flat Field Check) The WF/PC-2 was used to obtain a sequences of Earth streak and = internal flats to check for changes at the 1% level. The observations = were completed as scheduled, and no problems were reported 1.16 Completed WF/PC-2 6737 (Imaging Reflection Nebulosity in Three = Post-AGB Objects) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the reflection nebula = surrounding the post-AGB objects HD234478 and HD161796. The physical = mechanism of stellar mass loss on the AGB is one of the unsolved problems = in stellar astrophysics. The observations were completed as scheduled, = and no anomalies were reported. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 23 Successful : 23 Scheduled Reacquisitions : 13 Successful : 13 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled : 37 Successful : 37 2.3 Operations Notes: There were no reported operational problems experienced this = weekend.
