HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1837 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 03/18/97 - 0000Z (UTC) 03/19/97 Daily Status Report as of 078/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed WF/PC-2 6601 (Evolution of Binary Neutron Stars and = Their White Dwarf Companions: Part 2) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the binary star = STAR-2033 which is known to be a neutron star with a white dwarf = companion, and is also a millisecond rate pulsar. This is part of an = on-going program which is intended to enlarge the sample of known white = dwarf companions as new millisecond pulsars are discovered. The = observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.2 Completed Three Sets of WF/PC-2 7019 (WF/PC-2 SMOV Flat Field = Check) The WF/PC-2 was used to obtain a sequences of Earth streak and = internal flats to check for changes at the 1% level. The observations = were completed as scheduled, and no problems were reported 1.3 Completed WF/PC-2 6905 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 6 Calibration: Internal = Monitor) The WF/PC-2 was used to make several internal calibration = observations including biases and internal flats as part of a Cycle 6 = calibrations procedure. A variety of internal exposures are run weekly = to verify and monitor the health of the camera. The observations were = executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.4 Completed WF/PC-2 6361 (High Resolution Imaging of X-Ray Selected = AGNs) The WF/PC-2 was used to make high resolution observations of the = known, low red-shifted, x-ray active, galactic nuclius (AGN) MS0713.4+3. = These data will allow a study of the optical properties of an unbiased = sample of AGN host galaxies. The observations were completed as = scheduled, and no problems were reported. 1.5 Completed WF/PC-2 6735 (Locating Disks, Accretion Flows, and = outflows in Close Binary T Tauri Stars) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the binary system, = T-Tauri class star FW-Tau in order to study the location of disks and = accretion flows. Although the standard model for T-Tauri star formation = is based on single stars, we know that these T-Tauri stars are in = multiple star systems having separations less than 100 AU. The observatio= ns were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.6 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 7022 (WF/PC-2 SM97 Monitor) This calibration proposal is the routine internal monitor for = WF/PC-2, run twice weekly to monitor the health of the cameras. A = variety of internal exposures were obtained in order to provide a monitor = of the integrity of the CCD camera electronics in both bays (gain 7 and = gain 15), a test for quantum efficiency in the CCDs, an internal check on = the alignment of the WF/PC-2 optical chain, and a monitor for possible = buildup of contaminants on the CCD windows. This observation was = completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.7 Completed WF/PC-2 6424 (Calibrations of Stellar Evolutionary Ages = and Variations in the LMF) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the relatively old, = open cluster NGC-2477 to determine the luminosity and mass function (LMF) = of the white dwarfs and low mass (i.e., red) stars, and to make a = calibration study of stellar evolutionary ages. The observations was = executed as scheduled and no anomalies were noted. 1.8 Completed WF/PC-2 6837 (The Ultraviolet Properties of "Dwarf" = Seyfert 1 Nuclei) The WF/PC-2 was used to make ultraviolet observations of the = "dwarf", type one, Seyfert galaxy NGC-3226. This class of "dwarf" = Seyfert populate the faint end of the local AGN luminosity function and = hold important clues to the evolution of the entire AGN population. The = observations were completed as scheduled, and no problems were reported. 1.9 Completed WF/PC-2 6346 (Snapshot Survey of the Ultraluminous IRAS = Galaxy Sample-Part 1 High) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot survey observations of the = ultraluminous IRAS galaxy IR09320+61. These data will be searched for = multiple cores, which imply a merger has occurred, and for starburst = regions. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies = were noted. 1.10 Completed WF/PC-2 6701 (Photometry of the Globular Cluster System = of the Sagittarius Dwarf Galaxy) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the globular cluster = system Ter7 which is located the Sagittarius Dwarf Galaxy. Isochrome = fits to these data will yield the accurate age of this system. The = observations were completed as schedule, and no anomalies were reported. 1.11 Completed WF/PC-2 6565 (Imaging of Proto-Planetary Nebulae) The WF/PC-2 was used to make high resolution observations of the = proto-planeatary nebula IRAS17245 which is known to show bipolar morpholog= ies in ground-based observations. The observations were executed as = scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 9 Successful : 9 Scheduled Reacquisitions : 6 Successful : 6 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled : 21 Successful : 21 2.3 Operations Notes: The battery #1 capacity test has been completed. Discharge was = terminated at approximately 077/1744Z. NICMOS was taken to suspend at 077/1913Z due to an invalid operate = mode. At 077/1907Z, a patch was applied to the NICMOS filter wheel = disabled error action. NICMOS was commanded from boot to operate at = 078/0834Z. The secondary mirror was moved at 077/2251Z 3.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS: Continuation of SMOV activities. /DMH
