HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1843 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 03/26/97 - 0000Z (UTC) 03/27/97 Daily Status Report as of 086/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed WF/PC-2 6887 (A Photometric Search for Faint Companions = to Nearby Stars) The WF/PC-2 was used to make photometric search observations of = the nearby star HD201091 in order to look for possible companions. The = technique involves use of the planetary camera with wide band pass = filters to photometrically measure for the presence of resolved dark = companions. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no = anomalies were noted. 1.2 Completed FGS 6538 (The Distances to Dwarf Novae, and the = Calibration of the Technique of Infrared Spectroscopic Parallax) The FGSs were used to make astrometric observations of the dwarf = novae SS-Aug and several other reference stars in order to measure its = distance from its parallax. The distances to this dwarf novae is poorly = known. This deficiency severely impacts our ability to quantify the = energetics of the various processes taking place in dwarf novae systems. = The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. = 1.3 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6361 (High Resolution Imaging of = X-Ray Selected AGNs) The WF/PC-2 was used to make high resolution observations of the = known, low, red-shifted, x-ray active galactic nucleus (AGN) MS0321.5-6. = These data will allow a study of the optical properties of an unbiased = sample of AGN host galaxies. The observations were completed as = scheduled, and no problems were reported. 1.4 Completed WF/PC-2 6346 (Snapshot Survey of the Ultraluminous IRAS = Galaxy Sample-Part 1:High) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot survey observations of the = ultraluminous IRAS galaxy QDOTULIR11. These data will be searched for = multiple cores, which imply a merger has occurred, and for starburst = regions. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies = were noted. 1.5 Completed WF/PC-2 6443 (High Resolution Imaging of the Luminous = Infrared Source IRAS 09104+4109) The WF/PC-2 was used to make high resolution images of the = luminous infrared source IRAS09104+4109. The nuclear spectrum from an = IRAS survey indicates the presence of a dust enshrouded quasar, yet the = apparent ionizing flux of the AGN falls short of that required to produce = the infrared luminosity by a large factor. The observations were = executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 6837 (The Ultraviolet Properties of "Dwarf" = Seyfert 1 Nuclei) The WF/PC-2 was used to make ultraviolet observations of the = "dwarf", type one, Seyfert galaxy NGC-4750. This class of "dwarf" = Seyfert populate the faint end of the local AGN luminosity function and = hold important clues to the evolution of the entire AGN population. The = observations were completed as scheduled, and no problems were reported. 1.7 Completed WF/PC-2 6359 (Core Properties of the Bulges of Spiral = Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot survey observations of = spiral galaxy NGC-3067 in order to study its central bulges. The aim is = to investigate the core properties, correlations with global galactic = properties, and the frequency of occurrence of multiple and/or = miscentered nuclei. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no = anomalies were noted. 1.8 Completed STIS/CCD 7099 (CCD Flat-Field Stability and Cosmetic = Defect Fraction) These observations were used to verify cosmetic defect fraction on = the CCD using flat-field images, and to investigate flat-field stability = over short (minutes) and long (days) time intervals. The observations were executed as scheduled, = and no anomalies were noted. 1.9 Completed WF/PC-2 6352 (Dwarf Elliptical Galaxy Snapshots) The WF/PC-2 was used to survey VCC503, from a sample of 30 dwarf = elliptical galaxies. The observations were completed as planned, and no = anomalies were reported. 1.10 Completed WF/PC-2 6660 (White Dwarf Distance and Precision Age = For Globular Clusters) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the white dwarfs = which are located in the globular cluster NGC-6752. This proposal is = aimed at using the white dwarf cooling sequence for the calibration of = the globular cluster distance scale. The determination of accurate = distances is a critical prerequisite for the estimate of reliable cluster = ages. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were = reported. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 13 Successful : 13 Scheduled Reacquisitions : 5 Successful : 5 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled : 27 Successful : 27 2.3 Operations Notes: NICMOS was transitioned from SAA operate to boot at 085/2031Z. = The NICMOS best PAM position was updated at 085/2047Z. At 085/2148Z the = NICMOS heaters were turned off. A TTR was written due to a misconfiguration of the TDRS frequency = in the SHO for the event at 086/0113Z. 3.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS: Continuation of planned SMOV activities. /DMH
