HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1846 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 03/31/97 - 0000Z (UTC) 04/01/97 Daily Status Report as of 091/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed WF/PC-2 5828 (HST FAR-UV Imaging and Spectra of Jupiter = - Coordinated with the Galileo UVS) The WF/PC-2 was used to make far-ultraviolet imaging and = spectrographic observations of the planet Jupiter's North auroral = emissions. These observations will be coordinated with the Galileo = Mission ultraviolet observations. The observations were executed as = scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.2 Completed STIS/CCD 7067 (STIS CCD Point Source Acquisition = (STIS10)) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make = observations of point source GD153. This is to demonstrate ability of = the STIS FSW to locate an isolated point source, determine the position = of a spectroscopic slit, and position the target within the slit. The = observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.3 Completed WF/PC-2 6359 (Core Properties of the Bulges of Spiral = Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot survey observations of = spiral galaxy NGC-2339 in order to study its central bulge. The aim is = to investigate the core properties, correlations with global galactic = properties, and the frequency of occurrence of multiple and/or = miscentered nuclei. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no = anomalies were noted. 1.4 Completed WF/PC-2 6438 (Dust Structure in Backlit Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the backlit galaxy = AM0500-620 in order to study its dust structure. This effect is produced = by a pair of overlapping galaxies which offer an unusually direct way to = measure the extinction within the disk of spiral galaxies. The = observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.5 Completed WF/PC-2 6807 (The Spatial Distribution of Dust = Extinction Through Spiral Disks) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the spiral galaxy = UGC-5041 in order to study the distribution of dust within its spiral = arms. This is a background, early-type galaxy which is shining light = through the disk of a foreground spiral. These systems provide an = excellent opportunity to map with high spatial resolution the dust = extinction. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no = anomalies were reported. 1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 6793 (WF/PC-2 Support for the Mars Pathfinder = Mission) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the planet Mars. = This is to support the Pathfinder Mission to Mars. Observations of Mars = are scheduled near opposition, one month prior to landing, and during the = landed phase of the Pathfinder Mission. The observations were completed = as scheduled, and no problems were reported. 1.7 Completed WF/PC-2 6361 (High Resolution Imaging of X-Ray Selected = AGNs) The WF/PC-2 was used to make high resolution observations of the = known, low, red-shifted, x-ray active galactic nucleus (AGN) MS0944.1+1. = These data will allow a study of the optical properties of an unbiased = sample of AGN host galaxies. The observations were completed as = scheduled, and no problems were reported. 1.8 Completed WF/PC-2 6737 (Imaging Reflection Nebulosity in Three = Post-AGB Objects) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the reflection nebula = surrounding the post-AGB object HD56126. The physical mechanism of = stellar mass loss on the AGB is one of the unsolved problems in stellar = astrophysics. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no = anomalies were reported. 1.9 Completed WF/PC-2 7019 (WF/PC-2 SMOV Flat Field Check) The WF/PC-2 was used to obtain a sequences of Earth streak and = internal flats to check for changes at the 1% level. The observations = were completed as scheduled, and no problems were reported 1.10 Completed FGS 6919 (Three Points of Light Calibration) FGS#3 was used to make a three points of light calibration by = making observations of standard star UPGREN69. This calibration will be = done at three different points in FGS#3 using three different filters = (pupil, clear and neutral density). This will be used to obtain a = reference transfer function which will be used to deduce the presence of = secondary stars in multiple star systems. The observations were executed = as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.11 Completed WF/PC-2 6902 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 6 Photometric Calibration = Monitor UV/OPT STD) The WF/PC-2 was used to make both ultraviolet and optical = photometric observations of the standard star GRW+70D582 as part of a = Cycle 6 calibration procedure. These observations were done immediately = before and after decontamination procedures. The observations were = completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.12 WF/PC-2 6363 (The Environments and Host Galaxies of BL-Lac = Objects) Just before this proposal was due to begin, the safemode event = described in 2.3 occurred. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 5 Successful : 5 Scheduled Reacquisitions : 3 Successful : 3 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled : 12 Successful : 12 2.3 Operations Notes: At 090/233420Z the solar array position commands were issued (to = slew from 85 to 16.3 degrees). The solar array rotate command was issued = at 090/233920Z, and the solar array slew and type 2 slew command were = issued at 090/233941Z. At 090/234112Z the minus wing failed the SADE = torque test and the HST entered software sun point. HSTAR 6003 was = written. FOC and STIS are safed and nominal. NICMOS remains in boot mode. = COSTAR is in hold, and WF/PC-2 is in operate mode. Temperatures are = being monitored in real time. SADE-2 was being used when the difficulty arose. After several = patches were made to the FSW, a safemode recovery SPC load, using SADE-1, = started at 091/071209Z, and normal mode was achieved at 091/073951Z. Currently, HST operations personnel await the arrival of the = health and safety load which is to run from 091/1900Z until 092/1800Z, = when normal science and SMOV operations will resume. 3.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS: A meeting on the software sun point entry status is scheduled for = this morning at 10:00 a.m.. /DMH
