The = following scheduled observations could not be executed due to the = safemode event: ************************************** 1.1 NIC/1/2/3 7150 (NICMOS Coarse Optical Alignment: Part 2) 1.2 WF/PC-2 6887 (A Photometric Search for Faint Companions to Nearby Stars) 1.3 STIS/CCD 7063 (STIS SMOV CCD Contamination Monitor) 1.4 WF/PC-2 6346 (Snapshot Survey of the Ultraluminous IRAS Galaxy Sample-Part 1 High) ******************************** Resumption of normal science and SMOV operations occurred as = scheduled at 101:1600z (Saturday, April 12,1997). ******************************** 1.5 Completed WF/PC-2 6559 (An Imaging Study of Asteroids) The WF/PC-2 was used to make multi-color observations of the main = belt asteroid 29-AMPHITR. This asteroid will reach perigee during Cycle = 6. The images will be searched for companions. The observations were = executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.6 Completed Five Sets of WF/PC-2 6361 (High Resolution Imaging of = X-Ray Selected AGNs) The WF/PC-2 was used to make high resolution observations of the = known, low, red-shifted, x-ray, active galactic nuclei (AGN) MS0457.9+0, = MS1019.0+4, MS0844.9+1, MS0905.6-0, MS1217.0+0 and MS1220.9+1. These = data will allow a study of the optical properties of an unbiased sample = of AGN host galaxies. A Guide Star Acquisition Failed to the SSM control = due to a FGS # 3 Stop Flag at 102/1934Z. WF/PC-2 observations 105 = throught 108 were impacted. No other anomalies were noted. 1.7 Completed WF/PC-2 7029 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 6/SMOV Lyman-Alpha = Check-Part 2) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of WD0310-688 in order = to obtain far-ultraviolet (Lyman-Alpha) measures of the system's = throughput. This is to quantify any contamination of the WF/PC-2 = pick-off mirror caused by SMOV activities. The observations were = completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.8 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6359 (Core Properties of the Bulges = of Spiral Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot survey observations of = spiral galaxies NGC-5121 and NGC-3045 in order to study their central = bulges. The aim is to investigate the core properties, correlations with = global galactic properties, and the frequency of occurrence of multiple = and/or miscentered nuclei. The observations were completed as scheduled, = and no anomalies were noted. 1.9 Completed WF/PC-2 6816 (The Small Scale Structure and Symmetries = in Proto-Planetary and Young Planetary Nebulae) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of ROBERTS22 in order to = study its small scale structure and summetries. Proto-planetary and = young planetary nebulae show a dazzling variety of non-spherical = morphologies, whereas the circumstellar envelopes of the AGB red giant = stars from which they evolve are mostly round. The observations were = executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.10 Completed WF/PC-2 6837 (The Ultraviolet Properties of "Dwarf" = Seyfert 1 Nuclei) The WF/PC-2 was used to make ultraviolet observations of the = "dwarf", type one, Seyfert galaxy NGC-4772. This class of "dwarf" = Seyferts populate the faint end of the local AGN luminosity function and = hold important clues to the evolution of the entire AGN population. The = observations were completed as scheduled, and no problems were reported. 1.11 Completed STIS/CCD 7092 (CCD Dark Rate and Read Noise) Observations were taken to measure CCD dark current and gather = data for making super darks. The observations were completed as planned, = and no anomalies were reported. 1.12 Completed WF/PC-2 6363 (The Environments and Host Galaxies of = BL-Lac Objects) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot survey observations of = BL-Lac objects OJ287 and PKS0823+03 in order to study their environment = and their host galaxies. The goal is to investigate systematic trends in = host galaxy type, unusual morphological features, nearby companion galaxie= s, etc. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies = were noted. 1.13 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6346 (Snapshot Survey of the = Ultraluminous IRAS Galaxy Sample-Part 1 High) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot survey observations of the = ultraluminous IRAS galaxies QDOTULIR05 and QDOTULIR14. These data will = be searched for multiple cores, which imply a merger has occurred, and = for starburst regions. The observations were executed as scheduled, and = no anomalies were noted. 1.14 Completed WF/PC-2 6436 (High-Resolution Narrow-Band Imaging of = Liners, in Search of Their Central Engines) The WF/PC-2 was used to make high-resolution, narrow-band = observations of the galaxy NGC4569 in order to search for its central engi= ne and to try to image its liner. More than 30% of all galaxies contain = liner nuclei, which may be the weakest but most common manifestation of = quasar activity. The observations were completed as planned, and no = problems were reported. 1.15 Completed WF/PC-2 6740 (Hyper-Luminous IRAS Galaxies: Star = Formation, AGN or LENSES?) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the hyper-luminous = IRAS galaxy FSC12358+1 in order determine if its luminous state is a = result to its being a gravitational lens system or an active galactic = nuclei (AGN) system. This IRAS galaxy is known to emit an enormous = amount of power (>10^13 LSUN) in the far infrared. The observations were = completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.16 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6345 (Determining the Binary = Frequency for Ultra-Cool, Nearby M Dwarf Stars) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of ultra-cool, nearby, M = class dwarf star LHS2397A to determine the frequency for it being binary = systems and try to detect stellar and sub-stellar companions. The = observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.17 Completed NIC/1/2 7111 (Orion OMC-1) The Near Infrared Cameras (Cameras One and Two) were used to make = observations of Orion's Molecular Cloud (Regions OMC=3DHH10, OMC-2A anf = OMC-HH1). The NICMOS should reveal intriguing morphological details, = imaging the multiple finger-like features radiating from these regions = with high spatial resolution. A dark calibration image was also taken. = The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were noted. 1.18 Completed WF/PC-2 6583 (The Origin of the Alignment Effect: = WF/PC-2 Imaging Polarimetry of High Redshift Radio Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make imaging polarimetry observations of = the high redshifted galaxy 3C265. These polarimetric observations are = crucial to the understanding of the spectacular morphologies recently = discovered in high redshift radio galaxies by HST, and to the = investigation of morphological and evolutionary links between radio = galaxies and quasars. The observation were completed as scheduled, and = no anomalies were reported. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 32 Successful : 31 A Guide Star Acquisition Failed to the SSM control due to a FGS # 3 Stop = Flag at 102/1934Z (See Activities Item 1.6) Scheduled Reacquisitions : 12 Successful : 12 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled : 58 Successful : 58 2.3 Operations Notes: A HSTAR was written for a SSR Limit Violation (possible software = reset) during an SAA event at 104/0804Z.
