HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1861 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 04/21/97 - 0000Z (UTC) 04/22/97 Daily Status Report as of 112/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed Seven Sets of FGS/S/C 7001 (FGS 1 Delta Mini-OFAD = Post-SM2 Calibration) The FGS #1 was used to make astrometric observations of stars = OF49, OF56, OF42, OF94, OF80, et al., as part of delta mini-OFAD post-SM2 = calibration. This calibration will return the knowledge of the OFAD to = within an arbitrary scale factor, to a level of accuracy sufficient to = support the calibration. The observations were executed as scheduled, = and no anomalies were noted. 1.2 Completed Seven Sets of STIS/CCD 7092 (CCD Dark Rate and Read = Noise) Observations were taken to measure CCD dark current and gather = data for making super darks. The observations were completed as planned, = and no anomalies were reported. 1.3 Completed Ten Sets of WF/PC-2 7553 (Pure Parallel Archive Survey = II) WF/PC-2 parallel observations were obtained in the ultraviolet in = search for interesting objects. This program is designed to find = extragalactic sources with near ultraviolet excesses (3000 A0) outside = the galactic plane and far ultraviolet sources (1600 A0) in the galactic = plane. The procedure was executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were = reported. 1.4 Completed S/C 5582 (FOC/48 Monthly Activation (Camera Section = Only): Cycle 4) This proposal was executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were = noted. 1.5 Completed FGS 6538 (The Distances to Dwarf Novae, and the = Calibration of the Technique of Infrared Spectroscopic Parallax) The FGSs were used to make astrometric observations of the Dwarf = Novae U-Gem and several other reference stars in order to measure its = distance from its parallax. The distance to this dwarf novae is poorly = known. This deficiency severely impacts our ability to quantify the = energetics of the various processes taking place in dwarf novae systems. = The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. = 1.6 Completed FOC/96 6426 (A Search for Multiple Images of QSOs Seen = Through Damped Ly-Alpha Absorbers) The Faint Object Camera (f/96) was used to make observations of = QSO PG0935+417. The propose of these observations is to obtain = high-resolution images of a sample of QSOs with strong, damped, = Lyman-Alpha absorption in their spectra. The observations should = determine whether these QSOs are multiple-imaged by gravitational = lensing. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems = were reported. 1.7 Completed NIC/1/2/3 7048 (NICMOS Parallel Thermal Background Test) The Near Infrared Cameras (Cameras 1, 2 and 3) were used to make = observations of an object designated as Target-1 in order execute = measurements of the stability of the HST thermal emissions. A guide star = re-acquisition, scheduled at 111/114821Z, failed and the take data flag = remained down for the remainder of the observations. HSTAR 6039 was = written. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no problems = were reported. 1.8 Completed NIC/1/2/3 7023 (FGS 2 Delta Mini OFAD Post-SM2 = Calibration) Observations of stars M255, M267, M276, M293, M320, et al. were = used to calibrate the changes to the optical field angle distortions = (OFAD) of FGS unit #2 that resulted from the servicing mission. This = calibration will return the knowledge of the OFAD to within an arbitrary = scale factor, to a level of accuracy sufficient to support the = calibration. The actual solutions will provide the Project Data Base = with significant terms, their values, and their covariances, including = errors, which may then be applied to general FGS observations to reduce = them for field angle distortions, except for scale, alignment, and color = corrections. The guide star acquisition at 111/210359Z failed to fine = lock on FGS #3 only when the scan search limit was exceeded. HSTAR 6041 = was written. The remaining operations were executed as scheduled, with = no further anomalies being reported. Any possible effect on science has = not been communicated. 1.9 Completed WF/PC-2 6906 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 6 Calibration: Internal = Monitor-Visual Flats) The WF/PC-2 was used to make internal calibration visual flat = images as part of the Cycle 6 internal monitoring of the instrument's = operations. This proposal defines the standard series of internal flat = fields, which will be executed twice per month. The observations were = completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 12 Successful : 11 A default to fine lock backup on one FGS is described in 1.8. Scheduled Reacquisitions : 2 Successful : 1 A re-acquisiton failure is described in 1.7. 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled : 10 Successful : 10 2.3 Operations Notes: The Battery #2 capacity test is ongoing. Discharge began at = 111/1857Z. 3.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS: Continuation of normal science and SMOV operations. /DMH
