HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1875 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 05/09/97 - 0000Z (UTC) 05/012/97 Daily Status Report as of 132/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed NIC/1/2/3 7043 (NICMOS Focus Monitor) The Near Infrared Cameras (Cameras One, Two and Three) were used to make observations of NGC-3603 in order to make focus calibration and monitoring measurements. This proposal is built to run NIC/1/2 focus sweeps on a weekly basis, and NIC/3 focus sweeps twice a week during SMOV. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.2 Completed WF/PC-2 7553 (Pure Parallel Archive Survey II) WF/PC-2 parallel observations were obtained in the ultraviolet in search for interesting objects. This program is designed to find extragalactic sources with near ultraviolet excesses (3000 A0) outside the galactic plane and far ultraviolet sources (1600 A0) in the galactic plane. The procedure was executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.3 Completed WF/PC-2 6703 (Weak Radio Galaxies at Z > 2: Imaging a Unique Sample) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the weak radio galaxy GAL-0812+2 which is located at a distance of Z>2.0. Only the HST can deliver the resolution necessary to investigate the structure of galaxies at redshifts z>2. As described in HSTAR 6055, there was a loss of lock and erratic observer bias for the acquisition at the beginning of this proposal. No further anomalies were reported. 1.4 Completed S/C & NIC/1/2/3 7037 (NICMOS Transfer Function Verification Test) A test was conducted to verify the basic operating characteristics of the NICMOS FPAs. This was accomplished by taking a series of dark frames at different detector bias voltages (0.0-0.6V in 0.1V steps). These were taken in parallel as the data was directly compared with ground (system functional) test data. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.5 Completed Three Sets of NIC/1/2/3 7155 (New Prep Pattern for NICMOS Darks) The Near Infrared Cameras (NIC Cameras One, Two and Three) were used to make dark calibration images. This is to investigate the DC offset in the first dark readout after sitting in the NICMOS flush pattern. Three sets of multiaccum darks were taken. For the first two iterations of this proposal, guide star acquisition failures occurred at 129/0946Z and 129/1755Z. HSTARs 6056 and 6059 was written. Otherwise, the observations executed as scheduled, no effect on science is currently known, and no further anomalies were noted. 1.6 Completed Seven Sets of WF/PC-2 6346 (Snapshot Survey of the Ultraluminous IRAS Galaxy Sample-Part 1 High) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot survey observations of the ultraluminous IRAS galaxies QDOTULIR18, IR23365+36 and NGWULIR145. These data will be searched for multiple cores, which imply a merger has occurred, and for starburst regions. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.7 Completed WF/PC-2 6607 (The Origin and Nature of UV Bright Stars in Globular Clusters - II) The WF/PC-2 was used to investigate the UV-bright stellar populations of NGC-6254. This galactic globular cluster is known to be bright at the far-UV wavelengths, with known extended blue HB tails. This observation will complement data obtained during Cycle 5 and during the UITAstro-1 flight in December of 1990. The proposal completed as planned, and no problems were noted. 1.8 Completed WF/PC-2 6307 (Exploring the Morphology of QSO Absorber Galaxies at Redshift Z>3) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of quasi-stellar object GAL-223619 in order to study the morphology of this galaxy which has a redshift of greater than Z=+3.0. High redshifted absorption lines are known to be in its spectra. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.9 Completed WF/PC-2 5923 (The Structure of the Emission Line Regions of Compact Steep Spectrum) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the compact radio galaxy 3C268.3 in order to study the structure of the emission line regions of its compact steep spectrum. The goal is to map the emission line structure and establish its relationship to the radio structure. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.10 Completed WF/PC-2 6556 (Rest-Frame Ultraviolet Imaging of Normal Galaxies at High Redshifts) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of Field-1000 in order to study the rest-frame of ultraviolet imaging of normal galaxies at high redshifts. This is to study the evolution of normal galaxies over the last two-thirds of the age of the Universe through HST imaging of fields from our deep redshift surveys. At 130/104007Z, and as documented in HSTAR 6060, the scheduled aquisition failed. Despite a realtime ARU/PRT, the following two re-acquisitons also failed. The take data flag remained down. There were no further anomalies. 1.11 Completed NIC/1/2/3 7109 (NICMOS Detector Noise and Dark Characterization - Occulted) The NICMOS Cameras (NIC Cameras One, Two, and Three) were used to measure detector read noise and the dark for characterization. Verification of the stability since SLTV and measurements of the cosmic ray event outside SAA were performed. The acquisition failure mentioned in 1.10 also affected this proposal. 1.12 Completed WF/PC-2 6887 (A Photometric Search for Faint Companions to Nearby Stars) The WF/PC-2 was used to make a photometric search observations of the nearby stars HD95735 nad BD+41D3561 in order to look for possible companions. The technique involves use of the Planetary Camera with wide band pass filters to photometrically measure for the presence of resolved dark companions. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.13 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6363 (The Environments and Host Galaxies of BL-Lac Objects) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot survey observations of BL-Lac objects MS1258.4+6 and MS0737.9+7 in order to study their environment and their host galaxies. The goal is to investigate systematic trends in host galaxy type, unusual morphological features, nearby companion galaxies, etc. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.14 Completed WF/PC-2 6447 (Distant Comet Nucleus Sizes) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of Comet Torr in order to study the size of the comet's nucleus. This comet is part of a 10-year, ground-based program to search for physical and chemical differences between the comet's first entering the inner Solar System and after it has been thermally processed. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.15 Completed WF/PC-2 6633 (Cusps or Cores in Barred Bulges?) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the SB class (barred) galaxy NGC-3945 in order to study its nuclear bulge region and cusps. This is a highly tri-axial, tumbling, low-mass stellar systems. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.16 Completed WF/PC-2 6837 (The Ultraviolet Properties of "Dwarf" Seyfert 1 Nuclei) The WF/PC-2 was used to make ultraviolet observations of the "dwarf", type one, Seyfert galaxy NGC-4235. This class of "dwarf" Seyfert populate the faint end of the local AGN luminosity function and hold important clues to the evolution of the entire AGN population. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no problems were reported. 1.17 Completed WF/PC-2 6701 (Photometry of the Globular Cluster System of the Sagittarius Dwarf Galaxy) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the globular cluster system APR2 which is located the Sagittarius Dwarf Galaxy. Isochrone fits to these data will yield the accurate age of this system. The observations were completed as schedule, and no anomalies were reported. 1.18 Completed WF/PC-2 6770 (Resolving the Nature of Nova Shells) The WF/PC-2 was used to make images of the post nova remnant FH-Ser in order to study its surrounding shell structure. Past data has indicated a strong correlation between nova speed class and the ellipticity of the resulting remnants. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no problems were noted. 1.19 Completed WF/PC-2 6352 (Dwarf Elliptical Galaxy Snapshots) The WF/PC-2 was used to survey VCC1762, from a sample of 30 dwarf elliptical galaxies.
