HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1876 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 05/12/97 - 0000Z (UTC) 05/13/97 Daily Status Report as of 133/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6359 (Core Properties of the Bulges of Spiral Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot survey observations of spiral galaxies NGC-5448 and NGC-4036 in order to study their central bulges. The aim is to investigate the core properties, correlations with global galactic properties, and the frequency of occurrence of multiple and/or miscentered nuclei. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.2 Completed WF/PC-2 6785 (Ionized Gas Disks in Nearby Early Type Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the nearby, early-type galaxy NGC-4036 in order to study its ionized gas disk surrounding its nucleus. Finding such disks could lead to the possibility of detecting the gravitational effects of the supermassive black holes they orbit. The guide star acquisition at 132/020825Z failed when the scan step limit was exceeded. HSTAR 6062 was written. No further anomalies were noted. 1.3 Completed Three Sets of STIS/CCD 7092 (CCD Dark Rate and Read Noise) Observations were taken to measure CCD dark current and gather data for making super darks. The first iteration of this proposal was affected by the acquisition failure mentioned in 1.2. Otherwise. the observations were completed as planned, and no further anomalies were reported. 1.4 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 7588 (Measuring Q0 With Type IA Supernovae) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of supernovae SN1997A1 and SN1997A2 in order to measure the Q0 parameter. This is in order to produce a precise Hubble diagram from which can be used to measure the cosmic deceleration and global curvature of the universe. HST can make an essential contribution by providing photometry with substantially higher precision and better temporal coverage than can be obtained from the ground. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.5 Completed NIC/1/2/3 7048 (NICMOS Parallel Thermal Background Test) The Near Infrared Cameras (Cameras One, Two and Three) were used to make observations of an object designated as Target-1 in order execute measurements of the stability of the HST thermal emissions. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no problems were reported. 1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 6906 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 6 Calibration: Internal Monitor-Visual Flats) The WF/PC-2 was used to make internal calibration visual flat images as part of the Cycle 6 internal monitoring of the instrument's operations. This proposal defines the standard series of internal flat fields, which will be executed twice per month. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.7 Completed STIS/CCD 7147 (STIS Fine Corrector Alignment With CCD) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make observations of the standard star BD+28D4211 in order to perform a fine corrector alignment with the CCDs such that the image quality at the slit plane is optimized. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.8 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6802 (Cosmology With the Medium Deep Survey) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations taken in parallel with the prime science observations as part of the Medium Deep Sky Survey. During the second iteration of this proposal, during a ZOE, there was a guide star acquisition failure. The subsequent re-acquisition was successful. HSTAR 6065 was written. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no problems were reported. 1.9 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 7553 (Pure Parallel Archive Survey II) WF/PC-2 parallel observations were obtained in the ultraviolet in search for interesting objects. This program is designed to find extragalactic sources with near ultraviolet excesses (3000 A0) outside the galactic plane and far ultraviolet sources (1600 A0) in the galactic plane. The procedure was executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 11 Successful : 10 There was an acquisiton failure at 132/2312Z that is mentioned in 1.8 above. Scheduled Reacquisitions : 10 Successful : 10 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled : 11 Successful : 11 2.3 Operations Notes: The STIS MAMA2 high voltage was turned on nominally, starting at 132/0812Z.
